After a summer that was nothing like he’d planned, teenage secret agent Theo Reese is back to school and to work with Tactical Operational Support’s IT department. His world turns upside down arriving home from hockey practice to a major security breach.

On the run, he soon discovers the TOS network is down and he’s cut off.

As he uses his unique skills to find out what’s happened, Theo discovers the evil agency Blackbird is responsible. A nemesis from Theo’s first field mission is out for him and will stop at nothing to force Theo to help Blackbird realize their goal of taking global control of the internet.

Getting help from some unexpected sources, Theo must stop the internet takeover while trying to keep those closest to him safe.

I slept in short bursts and felt terrible as I attempted to force my tired eyes to focus as a dull throb pulsed across the back of my head.

The buzz went off again, and I recognized the pattern as Mitch’s. A glance at my watch showed he was texting and that it was six thirty. He’d be on his way to pick me up—if he wasn’t already there.

Crap.

I should’ve told him last night not to pick me up.

I propped myself against the headboard and grabbed my phone from the nightstand.

Are you all right? I just drove by your house and there’s three black SUVs there and a scary-looking dude outside the front door. I’m around the corner if you want me to pick you up. Let me know.

Who was at the house? It sounded like more than the regular police. Was TOS looking for me? Had Mom sent them? Or was it whoever had been in the house yesterday?

I pulled my legs to my chest and held them to me while I dropped my head onto my knees. I didn’t know what to do.

Another buzz from Mitch.

You’re freaking me out. Text me back.

Shit.

What could I tell him, so he wouldn’t worry?

Staring at the screen didn’t help.

Unlocking the phone with my thumb, I stared at the messages. He’d know I’d seen them.

I typed: Sorry. Should’ve texted. John’s meeting some people for Mom and Dad. I left early. Catch you at school.

I sent it and almost immediately the three dots appeared as he typed. In a few seconds the response arrived.

No worries. Just glad you’re okay. Tell your parents they need less scary colleagues. Didn’t expect to be freaked out first thing.

Mitch knew the basic cover for my parents with the FBI and Homeland Security jobs and that John worked with them.

Of course, this would only satisfy Mitch until he got to school and discovered I wasn’t there. Eventually news about John would get out, unless somebody was already keeping that quiet. That had to be why so many people were at the house.

Maybe TOS had mobilized without the network. A quick look in the corner of the phone screen showed that the network icon wasn’t present. Maybe I could find Lorenzo now or…. I still didn’t know what the or could be.

Theo Reese is just like any other seventeen-year-old—with one small exception.

This summer all he wants is to spend time with his boyfriend, Eddie, and work on his MIT research project. His parents have other plans.

An old friend needs the help of Theo’s family. Oliver Glenwood is an ’80s music star who runs his own label. His wife and his daughter, Sofia, now a chart topper herself, are the targets of kidnappers. Oliver hopes they can eliminate whoever is behind the threat.

When Theo uncovers an even more insidious plot, the covert agency the Reeses work for, Tactical Operational Support, swoops into action.

Song files have been modified to steal personal data from devices and emit a tone that drives listeners into a homicidal rage. Theo and his parents race against the clock to stop this mysterious enemy from releasing the music on an unsuspecting populace and causing worldwide chaos.

Just when Theo thinks the mission couldn’t be more complicated, Eddie shows up in New York looking to hang out with his boyfriend.

No one ever said being a teenage secret agent would be easy.

“So tell us what’s happened.” Dad straightened in his chair and shifted into his authoritative all-business voice.

Oliver nodded. “Two days ago Sofia and I were in Central Park for a photo shoot for her next album. It attracted a fair amount of attention because word spread on social media that we were there. Three guys rushed us from nowhere. Thankfully we were able to manage it, but they almost had Sofia in an SUV before my guys got their act together.” Panic flashed in his eyes. “We were in the northern part of the park and regular vehicles aren’t allowed up there, so how did they even get in? And why can no one figure out who they are? It’s like they disappeared.”

“Has anything unusual been going on?” Mom picked up with the questions. “Recently fired people with a grudge? Business deals that went sideways?”

Oliver shrugged. “No more than usual. My team’s vetted the people who have left the company—both fired and leaving on their own—from the past six months. No red flags. As for business deals. We turn things down all the time, but none of it seems out of the ordinary. We can re-review if you think it’d reveal anything.”

“Why don’t you let us do it?” Dad asked. “If it’s someone inside your organization, you might get false information back.”

“Won’t you raise more suspicions?”

Mom and Dad looked at each other.

“No.” Dad smiled, and Oliver seemed to relax. “Just tell us the employees and the companies we need to look at and we’ll take it from there. What about your personal security?”

“I’m worried they can’t do the job. There were four of them in the park and… well.”

“We’ll examine security from top to bottom.” Mom looked to Dad. “I’ll take physical security. We’ll use Theo’s expertise to examine your IT network and see if there’re any red flags there.” Her eyes darted to me as she mentioned my name, and I nodded.

Oliver’s brow wrinkled as he tried to reconcile that bit of information. “You’re a security expert?” It was cool he looked at me as he asked and not to my parents. He managed to not sound condescending either, even though he wasn’t sure.

“Yes, sir.” I reached into my back pocket, pulled my wallet, and fished out a business card. These were for show, but I kept a couple on me just in case. “I have a consulting firm.” I handed over the card and he studied it. It was plain white with “Theodore Reese—Cyber Security Specialist” in two lines at the center of the card. In the lower corners were an email address and phone number.

“He’s been brilliant with computers for years, and he’s taken courses at MIT for the past two years.” I didn’t get to see Mom be the proud parent very often, so it was nice to see her light up talking about my accomplishments.

“Impressive.”

“Thanks.” We traded nods.

Excerpt

Kyle

The coconut-head sinks into the waves and stays gone. My guts squeeze as I wait for it to pop up again. It’s like I give a crap or something, Gramps. I hold my breath, seeing as this shit is real—the life-or-death kind of real. When the head breaks the surface, a lungful of air shoots out of my mouth. It’s got to be relief. You tell me, old man—what the hell else could it be?

The current drags me out, like ten feet a second. When I’m close enough to check out his face, it’s one I’ve seen before at school. This kid’s a complete nobody.

Grampa’s ghost is still hovering in the air in front of me. Weathered skin, twisted lips, crinkled eyes, and a bumpy nose from getting broke too many times to count. All framed by two frizzy mops of gray—one sticking straight up off the top of his head and the other hanging from his chin. Yup. I can actually see him, and he looks real good to my scared and lonely eyes. What’s even better is he’s barking at me the way he used to. Riskin’ your life to save a boy you hardly even know, Kyle? A damn fool, you are.”

Like always, Grampa’s right. I don’t give a crap about the kid flailing around in the water, just a couple feet away. He’s mostly drowned already and seems pretty much cool with it. I’m risking my ass to save a half-dead nobody who’s got zero balls.

But sometimes you can’t go back.

Your mama will string you up by your toenails for pullin’ this crap, if the ocean don’t finish you off first. That right there’s a fact too. Even if Mom’s not too wild about yours truly, she’d lecture the hell out of me. Like, blah, blah, blah—funerals aren’t cheap.

The thing is, my ass is getting washed out to sea, and all I care about is making my way to that kid. Yup, I’m all in to saving the dude, even though it’d be easier to do a flip turn and swim away. And when it comes to riptides, you’ve got to go with the flow—only a damn fool would try to fight the ocean. It’s stronger than twenty of me, and I know this the way I know any other fact of life. Like Jesus is Lord, and I’m never gonna meet Him because, as Mom always says, Kyle, you’re on a fast track to a very hot place.

I take a good long look at nobody over there. But he’s got an actual name: Zip-lip Lenny Dubinski. From pre-calc and the geography elective I took so I’d have enough credits to graduate. A wave hits me full in the face. It shocks and stings like last night when Mom slapped me silly.

I sink again. Even so, I know better than to struggle. I don’t fight the tide’s drag or the oh-crap-I’m-dead feeling, like when you’re the only eighth grader at a high school kegger. And I speak from experience.

Let Mother Nature have her way with you, boy. Sounds like way more fun than it is, still, it’s what Grampa always told me to do if my ass ever got caught in a riptide. Like right now.

What’s most screwed up about this whole scene is that Zip-lip hasn’t lifted an arm to flag down nobody on shore to help him. And he’s got to be desperate, knowing he’s dying and all. He hasn’t even cried out for help. Then, everybody says he can’t make a sound.

About the Author

miakerick

Award-winning gay romance author, Mia Kerick, knows that a satisfying romance novel is riddled with challenges. For true love to prevail, the leading men are gonna have to put in some effort. But the HEA is oh-so rewarding.

Mia has a great affinity for the damaged teenage soul in literature. Her YA gay contemporary romance focuses on such tropes as hurt/comfort and dark secrets that keep them apart. In Kerick’s books, the course of true love never does run smooth.

Mia’s books have been featured in Kirkus Reviews magazine. They have won a 2019 IPPY GOLD award for Juvenile/Young Adult Fiction, a 2018 YA GOLD MOONBEAM Children’s Book Award, a YA Readers’ Favorite Award, several Gold Rainbow Awards in YA and adult categories, a Reader Views’ Book by Book Publicity Literary Award, the Jack Eadon Award for Best Book in Contemporary Drama, a YA Indie Fab Award, a First Place Royal Dragonfly Award for Cultural Diversity, a First Place Story Monsters Purple Dragonfly Award, and more.

Mia cheers for each and every victory made in the name of human rights. Her only major regret: never having taken typing or computer class in school, destining her to a life consumed with two-fingered pecking and constant prayer to the Gods of Technology.
