A return to Lyric and an incubus with a water dragon issue!
Wyrmwood by Sam Burns & W.M. Fawkes
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
A book of two halves and what felt like a missing middle bit.
The opening was fabulous, our reclusive half incubus half nymph Declan needs to go for a swim.
While he’s on his way out to the ocean, he fails to take proper notice of the “human” sat on the beach.
Only it’s not a human, it’s Augustus the water dragon in his bipedal form and he’s realised Declan’s his mate.
There then ensues a really lovely section of the book where August is utterly clueless, Declan is angry, then despondent, then resigned.
It’s funny, sweet and a little bit angsty as they completely fail to communicate. I particularly loved the introduction of August’s father William inside an enchanted sword, part of his soul magicked when he was at the end if his human lifespan.
We hit the part where they “separate” as August realises he has to let Declan go because he won’t ever be happy.
It was heartfelt, heartbreaking, I was sad and wondering how the authors were going to reconnect the pair of them, so inexperienced in relationships as they were.
And then it seemed to turn into a different book 😁 suddenly there was a new plotline out of left field, a bit of suspense, some daring do, and our heroes were madly in love!
It’s not that it was bad, on the contrary I was utterly delighted, I’d have just liked a teeny bit more built up to it.
Also, this one was oddly only low steam, which with an incubus who’s suddenly found his life mate, you’d have expected the on page romps to be uber sexy.
Still, all in all, another enjoyable outing from this pair of authors who remain two of my absolute favourites for paranormal romance.
And another epic cover from Natasha Snow ❤😍
