Ground zero, noun: the center or origin of rapid, intense, or violent activity or change.

Heat, humidity, and homicide are things veteran detective Sawyer Key expects to encounter on his first day with the Savannah Police Department, but the hostile reception from his new partner catches him by surprise. Sawyer isn’t a stranger to heartache and recognizes that Royce Locke is a wounded man who’s reeling from a devastating loss. Relentless and patient in all things, Sawyer is determined to make the new partnership work.

Savannah, Georgia is known for her quirky people, oak trees draped in Spanish moss, and antebellum architecture. Beneath the Southern charm and hospitality, festering hatred and violence is soaring with the summer temperatures. Locke and Key find themselves at the epicenter when their first case involves the death of a former shock jock who appears to be the victim of vigilante justice.

Opposites in nearly every way, the two detectives set aside their differences to take back their city and restore law and order. From this reluctant truce, an intense attraction grows that will either tighten or shatter their tenuous bond.

Falling for his partner spells inevitable disaster, but Sawyer’s always been a sucker for wounded things. Sawyer could be the key to the life Royce has always wanted, if he’s brave enough to trust him. The fuse is lit, the clock is running, and the zero hour is upon them. Tick tock.

Ground Zero is the first book in the Zero Hour series, which follows Locke and Key’s investigations and evolving relationship. Ground Zero has a happy-for-now ending with no cliffhanger. It contains mature language and sexual content intended for adults 18 and older.

Excerpt

Locke in his tight black tee and shoulder holster. Locke sitting astride his motorcycle. Locke staring at Sawyer’s strip of exposed skin. Locke’s sexy voice when he’d admonished him for making assumptions about his acceptance levels or possibly even his sexuality. The last one reached Sawyer at the deepest level. The dreams went on and on until Sawyer woke with a leaking, aching dick with only himself to relieve it.

There would be no going back to sleep until he took care of his body’s demands. He hadn’t been this aroused since… He couldn’t finish the thought, wouldn’t allow anything to disrupt his driving need for release. Bones made a grumbling noise and jumped off the bed when Sawyer yanked open the bedside drawer at an ungodly, predawn hour. Smart cat. He fumbled around, searching for the lube to rub one out but paused when his hand bumped into the flesh-like dildo. It had a suction cup on the base, and Sawyer took it into the shower when the need for penetration overwhelmed him. This was one of those times.

Throwing back the covers, Sawyer grabbed the dildo and lube before padding across his room to the bathroom, his swaying balls so heavy and full they ached. While waiting for the water temperature to heat up, he ran a hand over his chest, sucking in a sharp breath when his fingers brushed over hardened nipples. He closed his eyes and pictured Locke’s face pressed against his pecs, licking and sucking his nipples while Sawyer fisted his blond hair.

Fantasies of Locke kissing a path down his body, stopping to dip his tongue inside his navel before running his nose through his happy trail, made him moan out loud. Sawyer fisted his throbbing cock, wanting to put himself out of his misery but not eager for the fantasy to end.

Ground Zero Teaser 3

Stunning new romantic suspense from Aimee Nicole

Ground Zero Cover
Ground Zero
by Aimee Nicole Walker

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I need book two.

This one has just rocketed up the romantic suspense list I have in my head to sit very close to the top of the tree and straight onto my Favourites shelf.

It’s definitely my favourite of Aimee’s most excellent catalogue of books, overtaking Josh and Gabe’s Blissville simply because I utterly adore cop/detective/FBI etc partners falling for each other.

While the cases themselves weren’t as big a part of the suspense element as is sometimes the case, each individual one still produced some surprises.

But the killer factor of this new series is Locke and Key themselves. The chemistry is off the charts, the hurt/comfort is just going to be epic I know and there’s enough of a past experience fight for the relationship to not be an easy one.

Bring it on!

An interesting blend of tropes makes this romance a hit

KickflipKickflip by Christina Lee

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

One of the few Christina Lee books I’ve not read, Kickflip is an interesting blend of new adult, Motorcycle Club and love after trauma.

I enjoyed pretty much all of it, it never got overly angsty, the stresses and traumas felt real and believable and I loved the UST which built up slowly between Cory and Jude.

The big dramatic moment fit the Motorcycle Club narrative and I didn’t find it beyond the realms of possibility.

Loved the secondary characters and the setting and I’m planning on heading into the rest of the series after I’m done with my ARC commitments.

Fallen Angels opener is a stunning slow burn rockstar romance

HALO AMAZONHalo by Ella Frank & Brooke Blaine

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

That was an opener and a half to this new series from Ella Frank and Brooke Blaine!

It’s the first of a trilogy so there isn’t a HEA at the conclusion of this part but there is the start of a tentative HFN and it was one which took a long, UST-filled ride to get there.

This whole first book sets up the narrative beautifully, throwing the reader right into the middle of a band in crisis following the unexpected departure of their charismatic frontman (read A Little Bit like Desire for the background to that story 🙂 )

Viper is a real spitfire of a character, still smarting over the departure of Trent Knox and completely unprepared for the arrival of Halo as a potential replacement. The sexual tension between the supposedly straight new singer and the band’s guitarist is off the charts.

I loved the slow, slow burn of this one. Halo can’t get his head round his reaction to the pretty grumpy and at times obnoxious guitarist and Viper’s still painfully hurt by his friend’s desertion of a band they’d been in for more than a decade.

There’s lots of teasing, lots of “almost” encounters but the wait is absolutely worth the payoff when it finally comes. This ends with a soft cliffhanger, the authors have said from the start this will be a trilogy, but I was happy with the place Halo and Viper were left in.

Book two is out in a month and book three, the following month, so for those who don’t like to leave things hanging, there’s not that long a wait until the whole romance will be out.

Personally, I was very happy with this introduction to a spectacular pair of characters who are full of charisma and quite clearly dealing with something special.

This enemies to lovers romance hit all my buttons

41579626James—Uncontrollable by Felice Stevens

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Oh lordy, Felice Stevens doesn’t just knock it out the park with this one, she takes the World Series.

I have enjoyed every book in the Man Up collection but hands down this is my favourite.

Felice not only makes the name Malcolm sexy, she turns it into the embodiment of a man who just hit every one of my buttons.

He’s the perfect foil for James, annoyingly (for James at least!) on the sidelines from his first steps into this world, Mal is so much more than his flighty and inconsequential outward image.

James has my heart since the start of this series, but I always just wanted to wrap him up in a fluffy blanket and give him a cuddle.

Here we see two men with UST hitting the stratosphere and they always say it’s a thin line between love and hate so its no wonder that when the pressure finally hits maximum there is so much steam.

Everything about this book worked for me. There’s relatively little angst, the bantering and snarking is on point throughout.

These two men fight so hard because they have those pesky feelings and oh boy, do they burn it up when given free reign.

Now, while I believe this is the final book in this particular instalment, I do hope it won’t be the last time we visit this wonderful world of characters.

Set in the Regent’s Park pack world

Clapham Common—a new pack with their own set of problems…

Shifter Aaron Harper gets drawn into illegal underground fighting to keep an eye on his best friend. The thrill of the fight keeps him coming back for more, but discovery could mean imprisonment and banishment from their pack. Without a beta to watch over them, common sense takes a back seat.

Michael Archer of the Shifter Crimes Task Force is investigating recent murders. Despite the brutal cause of death pointing to the work of a shifter’s claws, instinct tells him a well-known nightclub owner is involved, but they have no proof.

Aaron and Michael’s paths cross after another body with the same injuries is discovered. With Aaron finding himself on the wrong side of the SCTF and Michael looking for a killer, any attraction between them is both ill-advised and unlikely. But fate has other ideas.

Brilliant intro to this new shifter series from Annabelle Jacobs

Butterfly Assassin
by Annabelle Jacobs

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Argh, you know that feeling when one of your favourite authors writes a new paranormal shifter story set in the same world as one of your favourite series?

You’re excited to read it, you’re looking forward to discovering new characters to fall in love with, new packs to discover. And then it’s over, you’ve read it and it was awesome but now you’ve got to wait ages for the next one.

That’s me that is. That’s how I feel right now because this first introduction to a new pack has more background into the shifter world and how it interacts with the human one, a new criminal investigation division geared at working between shifters and the Alpha Council, and a cracking good storyline with a twist I didn’t see coming.

I loved Aaron and Michael, although I do feel for the shifter as he won’t have the full mates bond with Michael being a human. Still, the emotional connection definitely wasn’t just one way and Michael’s feelings for Aaron were also strong and he knew it was special.

There’s lots going on in this book and it’s all brilliantly executed, the pacing is perfect and the new characters are all just as compelling as the Regent’s Park Pack series was.

I’m hoping this is a new series and we get Harry’s story next as there’s a certain Regent’s shifter by the name of Will who pops up once or twice in this one and I’m all over finally getting his romance 😉

Hurry up please Annabelle (although I know this one is only just out!)
