Death, be not proud…

The conclusion of the war between Elizabeth Bathory and the Guardians of Gaia draws closer, but the theriomorphs and their allies are caught between vampires loyal to Elizabeth Bathory’s daughter, Anna, and humans controlled by Elizabeth and her sire, Thrace. With the forces of evil now pressing on them from two sides, the theriomorphs need help, and they need it fast!

And soonest our best men with thee do go…

It has been five hundred years since Antonio de Barajas, one of the oldest surviving theriomorphs, lost his mate at the hands of his worst enemy. But Gaia never revealed the whole truth about Raphael’s fate, and Antonio is shocked when Raphael arrives to train Evan St. John and Adam Carson as true Dark Guardians.

Yet the man who returns after so long is not the same man Antonio once loved. The hard and lonely life as Gaia’s hunter has changed Raphael almost as much as his lost memories of Antonio and the love they once shared.

Thou art slave to fate, chance, kings, and desperate men…

Antonio must work with the stranger who wears his lover’s face, and while Raphael is welcomed by most of the team, one member sees his return as a threat to his own place in Antonio’s life.

But Thrace has allied himself with terrorists who possess a weapon of mass destruction. Now the theriomorphs and Dark Guardians must work together in a race against time to discover Thrace’s plan. Even as Antonio and Raphael are irresistibly drawn to one another, Antonio risks losing far more than his heart this time.

If he and his team fail in their mission, millions will die, for Thrace will stop at nothing to destroy Gaia once and for all.

Ari McKay is the professional pseudonym for Arionrhod and McKay, who have been writing together for over a decade. Their collaborations encompass a wide variety of romance genres, including contemporary, fantasy, science fiction, gothic, and action/adventure.

Their work includes the Blood Bathory series of paranormal novels, the Herc’s Mercs series, as well as two historical Westerns: Heart of Stone and Finding Forgiveness. When not writing, they can often be found scheming over costume designs or binge-watching TV shows together.

Arionrhod is a systems engineer by day who is eagerly looking forward to (hopefully) becoming a full-time writer in the not-too-distant future. Now that she is an empty-nester, she has turned her attentions to finding the perfect piece of land to build a fortress in preparation for the zombie apocalypse, and baking (and eating) far too many cakes.

McKay is an English teacher who has been writing for one reason or another most of her life. She also enjoys knitting, reading, cooking, and playing video games. She has been known to knit in public. Given she has the survival skills of a gnat, she’s relying on Arionrhod to help her survive the zombie apocalypse.

Awesome finale to this brilliant paranormal romance series

Copy of Blood-Bathory-Be-Not-Proud-KindleBe Not Proud by Ari McKay

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

What a finale! Gaia’s champions are racing against time to find Elizabeth and her sire Thrace and for one of the Theriomorphs, a surprise awaits.

When I realised just who was coming back from the dead I was overjoyed that Antonio would get his love story again and I wasn’t disappointed.

The pain and suffering he’d gone through when he believed Raphael dead were compounded when his lover returned but with no memory of their time together.

It broke my heart to see how affected Antonio was but I needn’t have worried. As the tensions rise and Thrace’s deadly plot is revealed, unlikely alliances are made and two men fall in love again.

The pacing was, as it has been throughout the series, perfectly judged to allow the quiet times between the plot narrative to really sink in.

There are some lovely moments with all the team involved as Raphael starts to teach Evan and Adam all his Dark Guardian tricks.

I’ve loved everything about this series, from the historical figures interspersed within, to the unique ideas for the shifters and vampires and to the romances between each of the three couples.

It’s been a delight to read them and personally I think they’d make a kick-ass TV series or film 🙂

Superb second installment in the Blood Bathory series

Absence of the Sun (Blood Bathory #2)Absence of the Sun by Ari McKay

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I love this series, it’s paranormal done proper 🙂

There’s an excellent plot, a great villain, interesting characters and plenty of tension.

If I had one criticism, and it’s a small one, I wish we’d get a bit more of the two main characters in “romance” mode, rather than only towards the end of the book when we get a full scene of them being physically intimate.

The reason for me wanting more of this connection is because it helps bring to life the tension of the dangers they’re all facing in the fight against the nosferatu.

But, this book is still fabulous all on its own as things begin to get even more complicated when the daddy of all the vamps is brought in to play. And Thrace is scary, so I’m really worried now about book three!

Both Adam and Tyr were compelling characters, each with their own hang ups and perfectly justifiable fears although I wanted to kick Tyr up the backside on a couple of occasions even while feeling sorrow on his behalf.

This book also deals a heavy blow which I didn’t see coming and which gutted me so well done Ari McKay, you both made me sad 😦

I hope there’s not too long a wait until book three is out with its new cover! And the new cover for this one is gorgeous.

Tyger tyger, burning bright…

As theriomorphs in the service of Gaia, Tyr Gustavson and his lover Aaron fought against the vampires aiding the Third Reich during WWII. But even the fierceness of Tyr’s tiger form couldn’t save Aaron from being torn apart when a mission went horribly wrong. Lost in his pain, Tyr remained feral until he was unwillingly recalled to Gaia’s service seventy years later.

In the forests of the night…

When fighter pilot Adam Carson’s plane was shot down, he thought the worst that could happen was being sent to a Nazi prison camp. Little did he know there were other monsters in the shadows, and one of them wanted to claim him. But refusing Elizabeth Bathory had a price. Adam was turned against his will and trapped in a coffin as punishment for his resistance.

What immortal hand or eye…

While hunting ghouls, Tyr and his colleagues discover Adam’s prison. Believing he could be an asset, Marielle Du Lac frees him. Adam joins the team and is drawn to Tyr, despite Tyr’s hatred of vampires.

When Tyr rejects Adam out of fear, Adam accepts a suicidal mission to find Thrace, the original Nosferatu. If their desperate plan works, the theriomorphs could destroy not only Elizabeth, but the sire of all vampires as well.

But if it fails, they could unleash a force leading to the destruction of them all… and perhaps of Gaia herself.
