Another stunning blending of world mythologies into a thrilling UF

All Souls Near & Nigh (Soulbound, #2)All Souls Near & Nigh by Hailey Turner

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Arhgggghhjjjuhhvvcc – that’s the noise my brain is making at how bloody brilliant this book is.

Full review to come when I’m at my laptop and I can get some semblance of order back!

***

Righty, brain back sort of functioning so here we go.

A bit more detail about why this book is so bloody brilliant. As with Book One A Ferry of Bones & Gold Hailey takes well know mythological Pantheons (Greek, Roman, Norse) and mixes them up with the lesser known ones.

In Ferry it was the folklore of West African, Egyptian and European cultures, here we’re in South America with the Aztec Gods – Quetzalcoatl and Tepoztēcatl, the Mexican/Catholic death cult Goddess/saint Nuestra Señora de la Santa Muerte as well as the Native American trickster God Coyote or Altse Hashke and it is this blending together of powerful beings into a seamless narrative which is the hallmark of this series.

This plot is a complexly woven and intricately detailed navigation through an urban fantasy world which feels familiar to the reader but which has that otherworldly tinge to it. The after effects of the actions of Book One are still being felt at the opening of this one.

Patrick and Jono have settled into a sort of routine which is just starting to feel like normal when everything starts to kick off. As with the first one, I’m not giving away anything of the actual plot. These books deserve to be read blind and given the chance to work their clever magic on the readers.

I will say all the usual suspects are on hand, we see Hermes, (who I always picture as a used car salesman in my head 😀 ) and the Tempest Pack, Lucien the Master Vampire, (who is still hating on Patrick for the death of his mother Ashanti) and his crew, and the rotten to the core New York God Pack alphas Estelle and Youssef, who I want to punch in the face every time they’re on page!

I’m not sure how many books Hailey is planning for this series but, for me, it’s shaping up to be just as epic as her Sci-Fi Metahumans one.

More please!

Right up there as one of Vicki’s best creations imho!

copy of touch of a yellow sun ebookTouch Of A Yellow Sun by V.L. Locey

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This is right up there at the top of the tree alongside the epic creation that is Victor Kalinski as one of my favourite offerings from Vicki.

Marek is just the sort of growly ice hockey player Vicki writes so well and my heart broke a million times as we found out more and more about his background and the circumstances which led up to his transfer to a barely hanging on team.

Shay, on the other hand, was such a joyous character to read, his personality and tranquil disposition just oozed off the pages.

Together they made magic and seeing the journey as they each found something precious in the other person was delightful.

Even the angst in this one, serious as it is in the subjects it touches on, never felt oppressive.

This was just what I was looking for in a sports romance, enough spice to balance the sweet, enough action to make the quiet times stand up. Bonus points for an awesome Siamese cat too 🙂

Book three’s sneak peek also looks brilliant.

Devon and Wade wrap up their romance in another fabulous instalment

Eagle CoverEagle in the Hawthorn by Sam Burns

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I want to live in Sam Burns’ imagination, or if not there, I’ll settle for her amazing creation of Rowan Harbor.

This book wraps up Devon and Wade’s romance arc and gives us more clues as to just who the big bad is who has been threatening the town and the supernatural creatures who live there.

I loved the twist in this tale, which saw Devon’s mother returning to the Harbor and bringing with her another piece of the puzzle.

The whole feel of this series is unique, whimsical and quirky, even when dealing with quite seriously dark subjects like zombie possession and inadvertently messing up people’s minds.

As the series draws closer to the end, I have to say I still have no clue how it’s all going to wrap up and the enemy be thwarted but I’m sure it will be done in a way which is wholly fitting to this quite brilliant series.

BLURB

A product of his past, Black spends half his time saving lives and the other half taking them. Every day, a hard choice must be made and he’s the man to make it. Long ago, he vowed to never love again; one-night stands with a willing body was all he ever needed.

But along came Quill, and Black’s life is irrevocably changed. He never expects something as simple as Quill’s persistence to alter the way he not only sees the world, but how he lives it.

Quill has bad taste in men and equally horrible luck. Growing up wasn’t easy, surviving is even harder. When his past and present collide, he’s convinced he’ll finally witness his own destruction.

But when an unlikely anti-hero steps in to protect him, his life is turned on its head. He’s spent months flirting with the man of his dreams and hoping he’d take notice. But it turns out, being on Black’s radar isn’t all it’s cracked up to be, and his idea of protection varies greatly from Quill’s.

Unknowingly sharing the same goal—burying their own pasts deeper than the fires of hell can reach—they’re both unaware that jumping into that fire will do more than ignite their feelings, it could lead to their own demise. Will Black and Quill be consumed by the flames, or from these ashes, will they find their own happily ever after?

EXCERPT

Black

I parked my car as close to Joker’s Sin as I could. I took my leather jacket off the seat and quickly put it on, hit the alarm, and made my way toward the club. There was still a line after midnight. The place closed in two hours, why would people wait that long? Well, I wasn’t.

“Can I help you?” the large bouncer asked.

“No.” I barreled through him and made my way into the club. It was like dubstep nation in there and so much fucking leather.

“Hey.” I felt someone tap my shoulder. I whipped around and grabbed whomever it was by the neck. It was the bouncer from the door.

“Not today, Junior. You tell Atlas, Black is here. Now fuck off.” I pushed him away and made my way to the bar. I hadn’t been inside Joker’s Sin before, I only knew how it looked based on Mace and Bill’s description.

I liked the concept and would’ve taken more time to appreciate it if I wasn’t hell-bent on finding Quill.

“Can I help you, handsome?” I turned and looked down. A small guy with pink hair and barely-there black leather shorts had spoken.

“No. Where’s Quill?”

The small man slid his fingers down my arm. “Mmm. Quill didn’t tell me he had a God for a boyfriend. You’re better than most I see him with.” He jerked his head to the right. I followed the direction and there before me, was Quill.

He was dressed in red leather. I couldn’t see below the waist, but the vest he wore was tight against his pale skin. I knew he loved his bracelets, and he had them all on tonight. His arms were covered in red and silver glitter, making him stick out like a gorgeous disco ball. It looked like he had put all of his piercings back in, and I could see when the light shown on his face, he also had glitter on his cheeks.

“I’ll just leave you to it,” the small man said with a chuckle, and I took the few steps to where Quill stood mixing drinks.

He hadn’t noticed me yet, and I got a chance to see he had red eyes and black liner on his lids. He looked like pure sin. I was surprised when I felt my cock stiffen. Until now, I was never sexually interested in Quill. Okay, to be fair, I admired him. He was stunning, but there was a line cut somewhere between admiration and want. Why was I feeling something now?

“Are you following me?” Quill’s voice snapped me back to attention.

“I thought you wanted me to follow you.”

Quill narrowed his eyes, but I saw how he swallowed as he took me in. He was a flirt by nature and no matter how peeved he was at me, he could never sustain that anger.

Set in the Regent’s Park pack world

Clapham Common—a new pack with their own set of problems…

Shifter Aaron Harper gets drawn into illegal underground fighting to keep an eye on his best friend. The thrill of the fight keeps him coming back for more, but discovery could mean imprisonment and banishment from their pack. Without a beta to watch over them, common sense takes a back seat.

Michael Archer of the Shifter Crimes Task Force is investigating recent murders. Despite the brutal cause of death pointing to the work of a shifter’s claws, instinct tells him a well-known nightclub owner is involved, but they have no proof.

Aaron and Michael’s paths cross after another body with the same injuries is discovered. With Aaron finding himself on the wrong side of the SCTF and Michael looking for a killer, any attraction between them is both ill-advised and unlikely. But fate has other ideas.

Warning: Minor spoiler in this review

Enemy Within (The Executive Office #3)Enemy Within by Tal Bauer

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

OMG, oh my God people this book is beyond exceptional, it wraps up the trilogy in an almost perfect fashion but still leaves a hint behind that there could be more.

And believe me, I want more. Who are the missing clones, will Jack and Ethan head up the secret black ops department, will Sergey and Sasha get married, will Faisal become King with Adam by his side?! I NEED to know these things.

The tension and pacing throughout this book left me breathless. Who was going to be the other hidden traitor? I guessed rightly with one though as soon as I saw his name.

SPOILER ALERT: It was a really nerdy moment and a tribute to one of the greatest Star Trek mythologies ever. Once he arrived I knew there would have to be something going on, it’s a truly stand out name but the discovery of just what his role would be still surprised me and the cleverness of the plotting to get him to that point was superb.

I think I spent half this book praying the traitors wouldn’t be Scott, Levi, Welby, Doc, Colman, the press guys, Elizabeth, there were so many it would have killed me to read as a traitor. And it was still a shock when it came. And it came with such a vengeance, the tension jacked up to such a level I could actually feel my pulse racing.

I should also say that the amount of research and detailing which has gone into this book series is exemplary, it deserves a world of five stars on that basis alone but when added to the rest, it takes this book somewhere beyond just an enjoyable read and into the stratosphere.

I want to see these books on TV or the big screen, they have every single ingredient needed for a true blockbuster and hopefully one day, when the world catches up that love between two men is just as romantic and vital as a heterosexual pairing, we may just get it.

Bravo Tal for writing a trilogy of books which will forever sit on my must be read favourites shelf.

So good it keeps all the stars – even with a cliff hanger!

Enemy of My Enemy (The Executive Office Book 2)Enemy of My Enemy by Tal Bauer

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Brilliance, sheer brilliance. This book, and the others in the series, need to be on the big screen, theatre epic in a way the greatest Bond films are, they’re thrilling like a Jack Ryan narrative and they have a perfect “would die for you” love at the heart.

I’ve even not knocked off my usual star for the bloody cliff hanger so I hope you appreciate that Tal 😉

Where to begin with this one though? An element of suspension of disbelief is needed, a reminder that this book is set a few years in the future when medical science had advanced at pace. There’s a little bit of the potential for a dystopian future at play here.

Our mad general is still orchestrating things from hiding, stacking up threat after threat and taking apart Jack and Ethan’s world piece by piece. So many amazing secondary characters are lost in this book, it’s not for the faint hearted and my heart is feeling somewhat bruised at their deaths.

But the tension, lord the tension as the moles on the inside continue to manipulate the plays, is immense. I’m holding out hope that the big reveal is not going to be one of the characters I’ve come to love so much.

And the scene with Sergey and Sasha absolutely killed me. So much emotion in such a small gesture. On to the final one now with the fate of the world literally resting on the shoulders of a small bunch of renegades.
