Allie’s new series had me completely enthralled

Liar City CoverLiar City by Allie Therin

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This book kept me up until 4.45am because once I started reading it, I simply couldn’t stop until I knew what was going to happen to Reese, his half-sister Jamey and the mysterious Evan Grayson.

And one thing I can tell you is that never, not if I’d sat and thought about it for yonks, would I have come up with this ending.

It’s a trilogy, so of course there’s ends left open and this one has no romantic relationship between Reese and Evan yet, but you can feel the palpable tension and mysterious connection which grows between them.

The murder mystery element of this paranormal is really clever and creepily disturbing, Allie Therin has a fantastic ability to take something commonplace and switch it into something deadly.

There’ll be no spoilers here though, you need to experience this book alongside Reese and Jamey as they get dragged into the seriously scary world of The Dead Man.

There’s also a side order of sarcasm, snark and spikey banter between Reese and Evan each time their paths cross and while Evan’s Dead Man status makes him impossible for Reese to read, it’s pretty obvious to me that the sparks are there to completely ignite a fire that’s unlikely to ever burn out.

With some fabulous side characters including Jamey, her boyfriend Liam, Evan’s Medical Examiner colleague, some really horrible villains – and a serial killer that actually raises an element of sympathy – this opener delivers on all fronts.

Honestly the only thing I didn’t like about reading this book is how long I’m going to have to wait to get the second one!

I am so in love with this alternative reality Seattle that Allie has created and the fascinating characters she’s populated it with.

London 1883

For Lord Everett Stanley, escaping his fate seemed impossible. As the second son, he’s destined for ordination and the life of a priest, but he’s hiding a dangerous secret. The laws punishing homosexuality by hanging may have been repealed but he and others of his kind are far from safe. Given no other choice, they take solace in the underground molly houses of London. Now that fragile world is threatened when the East End is rocked by a series of gruesome murders.

Inspector Archibald Franklin worked hard to overcome his working-class roots, making a name for himself as a respected inspector of Whitechapel’s H Division, but when he begins to investigate the deaths of several beautiful young men, fate throws him into the path of the handsome and enigmatic Lord Stanley. His gut instinct tells him the young lord knows more about the murders than he lets on, but the closer he gets, the more Everett calls to him in a way he’s tried to deny his whole life.

As a reign of terror grips London, they are drawn together in order to stop a monster, but for Archie, the growing feelings he has for Everett are a betrayal of the very laws he has sworn to uphold. And as the killer closes in, the two men find themselves bound together by a passion that may be their ultimate salvation or their utter destruction…

Redeeming Nick coverRedeeming Nick by Annabelle Jacobs

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

In Redeeming Nick we find out more about the cocky witch who is Mase’s best friend and why he’s been so cagy about the circumstances which led him moving up to the Dark Forest Pack area.

He’s a bit of an enigmatic character so it’s amusing to see him stunned into silence when he meets Axel’s cousin Dathal, a member of the Fae Guard sent through the Gateway to help with the investigation into the Blue Alhuirn smuggling.

Dathal is a mysterious violet eyed Fae and Nick cannot understand why he’s so drawn to him. It seems the same is true for Dathal and there’s plenty of speculation among their friends as to just why that might be 😉

Annabelle then takes the reader on a journey which seems like it can only end in heartbreak as Nick and Dathal’s magically connection has unexpected results while they’re burning up the sheets with a chemistry that’s off the charts.

There are unexpected developments in the investigation, there’s something odd going on with Max and his flat (and pack) mate Jake, Axel and Talis are still ignoring each other (and thank the lawd their book is up next!) and we have danger almost around every turn.

The adrenaline rush is really pumped up in this book as the plot twists and turns as the net draws closer around those responsible for the smuggling ring and there’s an unwelcome return from a Hunter group with connections to a traumatic time in Axel’s past.

As ever the world-building is second to none as we get to visit the Fae Realm and Annabelle creates a vision of a place where everything is a little bit lusher, brighter and shinier, simply just more than the human world.

Along the way Dathal and Nick’s connection roots firmly in their magic and each begins to feel a pull when they’re apart which adds a level of tension to the narrative outside of what’s happening with the police work that I really appreciated.

When the shoe finally drops and the proverbial hits the fan, they have to give in to the forces that stand in their way and just hope that fate will be kind.

I loved everything about this book. The pacing is superb, it has lulls where you get a chance to take a breath, scorching hot sex scenes between them in which their magic comes along for the ride, some mystery and further developments in the series long arc as well as a glimpse of what’s to come.

Getting these books early is both a blessing and a curse, because now I have to wait to see if Axel and Talis will finally get over themselves enough to fix what’s gone wrong between them and to discover what’s happening with Max and Jake’s pack that’s bringing them grief.

June can’t come soon enough (although I’m likely to get it a bit early because I am a smug beta reader!

As ever, I beta read this book for Annabelle.
