This office romance from Jayce ellis ticked all of my contemporary boxes

53079787._SY475_Learned Behaviors by Jayce Ellis

My rating: 4.5 of 5 stars

The more I read Jayce Ellis, the more I fall in love with the worlds she creates and the men who inhabit them.

This was a beautiful romance between two single dads, one only 35 but with a daughter heading to college, the other a bit older, who get thrown together in a work environment and find out that they’re not as adverse to each others’ company as first suggested.

This is a narrative which also puts the focus front and centre on two black men, their experiences of life, their culture, language and their family expectations, are all fully explored and it’s such a pleasure to see more of this contemporary romance coming from authors of colour.

I’ve really enjoyed the other books I’ve read from Jayce and this one was no different. The plot loosely follows along with a workplace romance trope, but adds in more depth through complicated families and two daughters who also fall in love with each other while at college.

I did thing this plotline ended up dropped without a firm resolution, both girls seemed to be still pining for the other but there wasn’t any movement once their feelings had been revealed.

But, I guess that’s a mirror of life! We don’t always get a satisfactory conclusion to relationships even when residual feels still exist.

There was a great supporting cast of characters and I’m hoping the two men that Jaq makes friends with at his daughter’s college are going to be the subjects of the other books in this series. I’m intrigued by both of them.

I also loved the strong female secondary characters sprinkled throughout this book. All in all another great read from Jayce.

Independent, introverted, and eager to please, all single dad Vincent is expecting when he flies in to attend his friend’s wedding is a good time… not an irresistible older omega who slips into his heart as quickly as he slips into his bed. With a job relocation to the city on the horizon, a relationship isn’t off the table, but there’s a catch.

There’s something about Vincent’s past his prospective lover needs to know—something he’d rather leave behind.

Can he jeopardize his fresh start for a chance at love?

Alone his entire life, all Mal wants is to have a family. The solution? Take matters into his own hands…

Always a babysitter, never a dad, Mal has struggled with issues of self-worth his entire life, and at his age, he’s come to accept that he’s meant to be alone. Eager to have a family he can love, and who will love him back, he decides to pursue IVF and start a family on his own. But when his path intersects Vincent’s, he finds himself questioning whether love really is possible.

Mal is no stranger to the evil in men’s hearts. The only one he can trust is himself, isn’t it? But with kind and thoughtful Vincent, imagining a brighter future is a temptation that might prove too good to resist.

When life reunites their paths in unexpected ways after a sizzling one-night stand, Vincent and Mal are faced with a choice—let their forbidden connection keep them apart, or indulge in love and lust like they’ve never known it before.

The Solution is a 90,000 word contemporary omegaverse, mPreg novel featuring a quirky group of single dads, fabulous revenge, an ice-cold shower that will leave you hot beneath the collar, and a unique take on Daddy kink perfect for two men who don’t quite fit the mold.

“Synecta is a fantastic pharmaceutical company,” Dr. Biernacki said as he turned and proceeded down the hallway, deeper into the clinic. Mal followed him, letting the door close behind him. “I’m always very pleased with the work they do. It’s thorough and detailed, and for the most part, they stick to a stricter code than is mandated by law. It’s very commendable.”

Mal watched Dr. Biernacki’s lab coat swish around his slacks as he walked. Ethics were fine, but Mal was less concerned with them than the study’s results.

“And we’re here.” Dr. Biernacki knocked on the second to last door to the right, then twisted the knob and entered the room. Mal followed him inside, but stopped abruptly a few paces into the room. His eyes had fallen on the doctor hunched over a counter across the room—the one with brown hair that was long on the top and short on the sides, whose body was leanly muscular.

“Your attending physicians,” Dr. Biernacki announced joyfully. “Dr. Peterman, our esteemed pharmakineticist, and Dr. Heaney, the overseeing medical officer.” But Mal couldn’t bring himself to focus on the other doctors in the room—not when his heart was in his throat and his thoughts were running themselves in circles. “And, of course, the man of the hour—the talented reproductive endocrinologist and IVF specialist, Dr. Rhyne.”

Dr. Rhyne’s kind brown eyes met Mal’s. The color drained from his handsome face, and his lips tightened into a thin, emotionless line.

Mal stared back.

Vincent Wasserman, the man Mal had spent his heat with at Alex and Laurence’s wedding, stood no more than six feet away. He was the doctor who would monitor Mal’s progress and retrieve his eggs. The one who’d fertilize them and implant them once all was said and done.

Vincent Wasserman, who it seemed also went by Dr. Rhyne.

Mal’s knees went weak.

The man who’d called him Daddy was going to make him one.

Blurb

After four years spent apart, Aaron is on his way home to marry the love of his life—his best friend. The proposal? It’s about to end in disaster.

Dedicated, determined, and head-over-heels in love, Aaron is ready to settle down with the man of his dreams—his best friend, Gage. With a prestigious degree under his belt, a promising career ahead of him, and a loving boyfriend to pamper and spoil for the rest of their lives, the future is brighter than it’s ever been.

Isn’t it?

The lie Gage has been living for the last four years is about to fall apart, and there’s only one way he can see himself holding it together. The proposal? It’s everything he’s ever wanted, but something he might never be able to have…

When the steamiest summer of Gage’s life leaves him pregnant with Aaron’s child, Gage knows what he has to do. He’s made Aaron a promise, and the future of their family depends on it.

Forced to keep his son a secret from everyone—even Aaron—Gage does whatever it takes in order to keep a roof over their heads. But when his child gets sick and Gage can’t afford medical treatment, he has a difficult choice to make.

How far will he go to keep his future family together?

When an unexpected reunion brings Aaron and Gage back together, they’re faced with a choice: overcome the obstacles standing in their way to becoming a happy family, or accept that the proposal they’ve both been dreaming of is never going to happen.

The Proposal is a 70,000 word contemporary omegaverse mPreg novel featuring a quirky group of single dads, a live stream you’re never going to forget, pretty pearls in naughty places, and a love that neither time nor distance can tear apart.

Excerpt

The tears in Gage’s eyes grew heavier. They gleamed in the lackluster hall lights, but they didn’t stream down his cheeks. The sight of them tore what was left of Aaron’s heart apart, but he couldn’t find it in himself to step forward and wipe them away. That wasn’t his place anymore. Gage had found someone else to care for him—someone else to share his heart with. Aaron hated the thought of it, but there was nothing he could do. If Gage had moved on, that was it. Nothing he could do could make him stay.

“I love you, too,” Gage said. He reached out for Aaron’s hand again, but Aaron backed away. He couldn’t bring himself to touch Gage for fear that he’d feel the sparks they’d once shared all over again. “It wasn’t supposed to be like this. If I’d known you were coming home, I would have told you. I didn’t know. I love you.”

“Then whose child is that?” Aaron asked. The putrefying sensation in his chest continued to fester. He wasn’t sure it would ever go away. “How can you say that you love me when you had a child with someone else?”

“I didn’t,” Gage admitted, dropping his gaze to the floor. His voice was small, but his posture was broad—he occupied the doorway, blocking Aaron out as if he was afraid that Aaron might try to hurt the tiny life on the other side. No matter how upset and downtrodden he was, it seemed to Aaron like Gage would defend his baby with his life. Aaron knew what it felt like to love someone that much. Everything he’d ever done, he’d done for Gage.

He only wished Gage felt the same way.

“Then what, Gage?” Aaron asked. His throat was tight, and getting his words out was a struggle. “Whose baby is that?”

Gage lifted his chin. He looked Aaron in the eyes, and the first mournful tear rolled down his cheek. “He’s yours, Aaron. He belongs to you.”
