Finding and keeping love isn’t always easy.

Josh Shepard developed an intense connection to music, despite being born deaf. None of his relationships have ever come close to his bond with music. Then Branston ‘Bran’ Vale saunters into his life. Bran is the type of guy Josh always fantasized about. With Bran in their band, traveling with them, Josh’s libido rises to an uncomfortable level.

Bran isn’t prepared for the impact Josh has on him. Bran had trouble with entanglements before, derailing him. His feelings for Josh outshine anything he’s ever had before. Josh could be the answer to everything, or he could be the biggest mistake Bran has ever made.

Ready to commit to more, a ghost from Bran’s past comes back to haunt him, stalling his future. Bran might have to give up everything to save the band and Josh.

Excerpt

Everyone could hear what they were saying, which added another layer of heat to the embarrassment Josh already felt. He wasn’t used to attention like this, so incredibly focused just on him.

“Like I said, that first riff you all played was magical. I mean, it was a soundcheck, but the magic zipped up my spine and held me. I hadn’t planned on staying for the show, but I couldn’t leave. I think there were maybe three hundred people in the audience—”

“If that,” Casey snorted.

“We’ve grown a little since then,” Margot said.

Ish came up and put his arm around Josh’s shoulder. “My boy Josh is magical. He’s the reason we sound so good.”

Now Josh’s cheeks hurt from the flames burning through him. Ish seemed to delight in embarrassing him based on the smile spread from ear to ear.

“I really want to play with you all. I know I’m new to you, but I swear I’ll—”

“Wait.” Casey jumped up and rushed over. “Are you serious? Like you want to play with us on stage?”

Bran turned to Casey and nodded. “Yeah, of course. I was going to tell Munoz to fuck off when he called, but then I heard it was Eradicate Apathy, and I jumped at the chance. I haven’t played on stage in a while, so I’d like you all to go easy on me for the—”

“Holy shit!” Casey yelled and jumped up and down, clapping his hands. “Sorry, we’re total dorks. I can’t believe you’re going to be on stage with us. This is a dream come true.”

Josh stared at the group jumping around and hugging each other as fear wove through him. Bran was too good-looking. Josh would have to watch his reactions. Living on the bus together would be difficult. Branston Vale was definitely not the type of guy who would ever be interested in him. Their new bass player was hot. His sex appeal dripped from every word, every look. Josh would be helpless against that appeal. Shit, he would have to keep control or risk blowing his load at the most embarrassing times.

Ish caught the look on his face and stilled, then everyone turned to stare at him. He sucked in a breath, hating that he was freaking out and now everyone was looking at him.

“Is that okay with you?” Casey asked.

Josh shook himself, trying to push away the weirdness. “Yeah. I—that’s—it’s great.”

His voice didn’t sound like he meant it, and he could tell Bran had picked up on his hesitancy. Why was he holding back?

Munoz narrowed his gaze but saved him by changing the subject, asking Bran what he was currently working on. The rest of his band members kept the conversation going as he tried to come to grips with how he’d reacted to this sexy man.

After an hour or so, he excused himself to the restroom and breathed a sigh of relief as he stood alone and stared at the mirror. He shouldn’t be freaking out, but his heart sped up every time he looked at Bran.

“Get it together.”

The door opened, and he quickly turned on the water, washing his hands again so the person coming in didn’t think he was a dork talking to himself. He hadn’t paid any attention to who had come in because they were in a private area of the hotel and few people were back here. When Josh glanced up, he found Bran studying him. A gasp escaped his lips.

Bran’s eyes narrowed, then he frowned. “I didn’t mean to scare you.”

Josh shook his head. “No worries. I was deep in thought.”

Bran’s lips thinned and he crossed his arms over his chest. “Have you got an issue with me playing in the band?”

Horror washed over Josh. “No. I-I…”

Bran moved closer. “What is it then?”

Josh’s whole body heated and sweat broke out on his forehead. He couldn’t tell this man he thought he was hot. His lungs seemed to stop working, and his gaze accidentally flicked to Bran’s lips, looking all sexy and plump behind his dark beard. He swore Bran’s lips ticked up before stepping back a few inches.

“I’m just a normal guy, nothing special. I’ve been listening to you all since I first heard you. It would be an honor if you allowed me to play on stage during Rocktoberfest.”

Josh gulped in air. He had to get past the way this guy made him feel. “I want you.”

Bran’s eyebrows lifted in the silence that followed Josh’s declaration, but he hadn’t meant it to be a declaration. Shit, he’d left off a word.

“There. I want you there to play with me—us. I want you on stage to play with the band.”

Make a wish on a shooting star. Cry to the moon like the coyotes do.

There are so many things Sid cannot have, so many things he tells himself he does not need. His job at Farthingdale Ranch is good enough, right? Then along comes Heston, a glamorous and gorgeous top-tier model from New York City who makes Sid want and then want some more.

Heston has come to Wyoming to do a pre-fall photo shoot in the middle of July. It’s hot as hell, his skin is drying up, his hair is breaking off, and he’s got a hangnail. Then along comes Sid, lanky and sweet, and Heston begins to think there’s more to life than modeling.

Strike a Pose is a 80k-word contemporary MM novel featuring found families, opposites attract, different worlds, cowboy/cityboy, hurt/comfort, mutual rescue, fish out of water, a bit of ugly duckling, raindrop kisses, and quilts. It’s part of the Model Love multi-author series. Each book can be read as a standalone, in any order, but there are so many models falling in love, why not read them all?

All three models were tall, willowy, broad shouldered, narrow hipped. They wore blue jeans and shiny cowboy boots, and pushed their new-looking felt hats back on their heads.

Then the wind rose, swooping a badly-worn cowboy hat off one model’s head. He bent to pick it up, his hair dark gold and glossy and tumbled and incredibly perfect. As he straightened, looking like he was about to put that hat back on in the wrong way, Sid couldn’t help himself.

“That’s not how you wear it,” he said, grabbing the cowboy hat and holding it out. “It looks dumb on the back of your headt, plus it won’t shield you from the sun at all.”

A long silence fell hard, and of course Sid had again said what he thought without stopping to think. He opened his mouth to apologize when the model held out his hand for the hat with one, languid curve of his wrist.

“Then how am I supposed to wear it?” asked the model.

“Heston, it doesn’t matter,” said Nick. “Just put it back on so we can finish up.”

“This fellow seems to think it matters,” said Heston, still holding out his hand to Sid.

His eyes were impossibly green, or maybe it was the dark eyeliner he wore that made them so clear and green. Or maybe it was his dark gold, wavy hair, messy over his forehead, just about as perfect as could be. Or maybe it was his expression, watchful, like Sid might bite him.

“How am I supposed to wear it?” Heston asked.

The other models were watching Sid as he turned Heston’s hat around in his hands, like they wanted to wear their hats the right way and not like city slickers.

“Like this,” said Sid, handing the hat to Heston. He took his hat off and placed it gently on his head, almost horizontal, but with a jaunty tilt to the side. “The brim keeps the sun out of your face.” He tugged on the brim to pull it forward. “Like this if you’re riding into the sunset.” He smiled to show them all he’d just made a little joke. “Like a real cowboy,” he added.

Heston shook his hair back and, his mouth open in concentration, he settled his cowboy hat on his head, then tugged the brim to echo the jaunty angle of Sid’s hat. With the hat on the right way, he struck a pose.

For a full minute, thuds of Sid’s heartbeat, Heston looked the part, like a real cowboy looking over a vista view of waving green grass, looking for lost cattle, and he was madly in love.

About the Author

jackienorthbysarahjochreene

Jackie North has been writing stories since grade school and spent years absorbing mainstream romances. She also wanted to put her English degree to good use writing romance novels, because for years she’s had a never-ending movie of made-up love stories in her head that simply wouldn’t leave her alone.

Soon, she discovered m/m romance and decided that men falling in love with other men was exactly what she wanted to write books about. In this dazzling new world, she turned her grocery-store romance ideas around and is now putting them to paper as fast as her fingers can type.

She creates characters who are a bit flawed and broken, who find themselves on the edge of society, and maybe a few who are a little bit lost, but who all deserve a happily ever after. (And she makes sure they get it!)

She likes long walks on the beach, the smell of lavender and rainstorms, and enjoys sleeping in on snowy mornings. She is especially fond of pizza and beer and long road trips. In her heart, there is peace to be found everywhere, but since in the real world this isn’t always true, Jackie writes for love.

Larson Monroe is not a rockstar. Not by any stretch of the imagination. He’s a newly promoted middle manager for the marketing department of a sports apparel company…and he’s content. Mostly. But when Pitch, his identical twin brother, calls and begs for help, Lars can’t resist indulging in the childhood game of pretending to be his brother.

Reed likes being hired by stuffed suits and high society types just fine. But when he gets the chance to work security for Rocktoberfest, the biggest rock festival in the country, he’s eager to take the job. It’ll be a nice change of pace and a fat bonus for being on-site during the event. What he doesn’t expect is the change of pace of his heart when he spots Pitch Monroe, lead singer for a newbie band he’s never even heard of.

The sparks are instant and quickly burn hotter than either of them have ever felt before. But when Larson’s real identity is exposed, it doesn’t exactly go as planned…

Excerpt

After a somewhat inappropriate pat down and near-probing, I’m allowed to grab my carry-on and shoes off the conveyor belt and head toward my gate.

For the thousandth time in twenty-four hours, I curse my idiot brother for putting me in this situation. As usual, Pitch is fucking up his life and expects me to bail him out. And as usual, I’m the bigger idiot who is running to his rescue.

A part of me knows he’ll never stop relying on me if I always fix shit for him, but a bigger part of me likes being relied on. And this is something only I can help with.

Most twins aren’t as identical as Pitch and I are. If we have the same clothes on and our hair looks similar, even our parents have trouble telling us apart. That was fun when we were twelve. But as grown-ass men, I didn’t ever expect to get the call from my brother asking me to pretend to be him.

In public.

On stage in front of thousands of people.

But I guess I was giving him too much credit.

When my rockstar brother texted two days ago and asked me to be him at the biggest music festival of his career, I thought he was joking.

Like, legit out of his mind on some serious psychedelics. Sadly, he wasn’t.

Pitch spent the past week in Vegas, partying like the next few days weren’t the most important of his entire career, and now, as anyone could have predicted, he’s fucked up his voice and has laryngitis. According to his doctor, he won’t be able to speak above a whisper for at least a few weeks, and there’s no way he can perform for at least a month, maybe longer.

This means he can’t lead his band during Rocktoberfest, a huge music festival in the middle of the desert. A music festival that officially starts tomorrow. And because his band is already pissed at him for all the other times he’s messed up significant opportunities for them, he can’t tell them the truth.

Enter me.

The gullible brother who can be talked into anything because my own life is so damn boring that I need to live vicariously through my brother now and then.

Usually, that means watching his band play and pretending I have his kind of talent.

I never, in my wildest nightmares, imagined I’d end up on stage in front of a crowd of tens of thousands of people…singing. Pitch is the attention whore. I’m the guy in the background, not a frontman. And yet, I’m about to get on a plane and be the lead vocals for one of the hottest up-and-coming rock bands in the country.

A sheen of sweat erupts on my brow and temples as the oxygen seems to ease out of the busy airport terminal. Trying to maintain as much composure as possible, I slowly count to ten and suck in a deep breath as I walk toward my gate.

I will not have a panic attack in the middle of the airport.

Not only will it cause a mortifying amount of embarrassment for me, but it would also ruin this crazy little plan that Pitch and I have cooked up for me to sneak into the festival, pretend to be him, and sneak out without anyone realizing he wasn’t actually there.
