Fell a bit flat for me unfortunately

Manic Pixie Dream Boy (The Underdogs, #1)Manic Pixie Dream Boy by K.A. Merikan

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

3.5*

So this had one of the most brilliantly mixed opening chapters of any book I’ve read as it throws the reader into the humorous and sexy initial meeting of the two MCs.

It also manages to bring the Merikans’ own unique blend of crazy to the fake boyfriend and rock star romance tropes with a bit quite insta love connection between the somewhat over confident Dusk and the truly individual drifter he nicknames Lolly.

But, I don’t know exactly what it was but I didn’t fall totally in love with this couple or with this book like I usually do with this author duo. I think perhaps the angst was a bit ‘teen’ dramady and the characters all felt young – although I don’t remember it ever been said how old either Dusk or Lolly were.

There was still a lot to like though, this is the first in a new series about the band members as I understand it and I looking forward to finding out more.

I did like the resolution of the conflict though, there was an understanding and an acceptance that mistakes had been made and more honest conversation was needed but I did believe both Dusk and Abe (Lolly’s real name) did love each other completely.

And, as is always the case with books from these two, the cover is gorgeous and the sex is scorching.

#ARC received from the authors in return for an honest and unbiased review.

Gorgeous second chance romance

Still Your GuyStill Your Guy by Devon McCormack

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Sometimes you meet ‘the one’ when you’re young and you don’t know any different and you think the world will always be laid out in front of you.

Then life conspires and sometimes it twists along the way and you lose ‘the one’ and you’re not sure your heart will ever recover. And then, if you’re one of those gifted by fate, sometimes ‘the one’ comes back and you get another chance.

This book has an occasional splutter, when perhaps the language doesn’t match up to the emotions being expressed, but otherwise it’s a gorgeous journey with two men who lost their hearts as boys growing up together.

There’s a great set of secondary characters and the world building creates a location which is as strong a character as the people.

As this is a Devon McCormack story, there’s plenty of smexy times, but it’s also emotionally connected as well as smoking hot, there is a deep aching love between Mason and Chase which seeps from the pages and wraps itself around the reader.

Stunning Jay Aheer cover too.

New series starter is smoking hot

Depth of Field (Last Chance Book 1)Depth of Field by Riley Hart

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Gawd this book is hot and sensual and steamy and erotic and all the other words you associate with a brilliantly crafted sexual romance.

It’s also full of emotions and actual conversations and relatively low angst and a minor hiccup of misunderstanding which, for me anyway, didn’t work quite so well as the stumbling block to eternal happiness.

However, the resolution of said stumbling block was executed perfectly and without a load of unnecessary drama and I loved how Shane owned up to his fears and his deliberately destructive reaction.

There’s ancient hurts being healed, there’s an old time enemies to lovers and there’s some of the most beautifully written expressions of love I’ve read in a while.

This book, while it’s hot enough to melt the polar ice caps, also has so much romantic love running alongside it, that it makes reading it an absolute joy.
