Winter’s romance brings a surprising amount of warmth and wraps up this superb series

All the stars and then some more stars!

Well, that’s how you wrap up a series, not only with a wonderful action packed romance for the youngest of the Varik brothers, but with a conclusion to the series long narrative which has been putting them in danger from the off.

I loved everything about this book, it hit all the right notes I’d expect from a paranormal romance and especially one from the pen of such a talented writer.

Winter Varik’s secret absolutely fascinated me, this most reclusive member of the family has been something of a mystery throughout the series and here we find out why.

My heart broke for him so much but once Fox landed on the scene, it was clear Winter’s life was going to find new joy because the witch was an absolute delight.

As the plot thickened, I loved how Fox became so involved through his own stubborn nature, his unwillingness to be a victim and the feeling that Winter was someone special who needed a person firmly in his corner.

The rest of the Variks and the clan make appearances but this book is, essentially, Winter and Fox trying to find out about the prophesy which is foretelling the downfall of their family and is being used by a manipulative vampire to try and take over as ruler of them all.

As every with Jocelynn, the action is on pointe, there’s some pretty spectacular fight scenes in which we see just how Winter earned his Angel of Death nickname as the Varik executioner.

But there’s so much more to him than that and I loved how Fox broke through every wall he’d put in place, to get beyond his determination to end the threat to his family and then end himself!

Winter may have had a streak of martyrdom, but it was justifiable because of the way he lived his life and I loved that not only Fox, but also his brothers once they found out his secret, called him out on it big time.

There’s not going to be any plot spoilers here, but can I just say how much I loved Zelda in this book, I’d read a whole series just on her meddling and sparking with Aiden.

And, speaking of, CANNOT wait for his book and to see him finally find happiness after two centuries of looking after his boys and mourning his lost love Julianna.

A fitting end to what has been a quite outstanding series from Sam

Full review tomorrow when I’m at the laptop.

***

This book finished off what has been a truly outstanding series of urban fantasy novels which has featured three interlinked trilogies working with an overall narrative.

In this it’s Fletcher’s turn under the spotlight once again and his has perhaps been the hardest journey of all those involved in the fight to protect Rowan Harbor.

I’m not going to lie, I wasn’t sure where Sam was going to take this one. There were times when I thought I’d got a handle on the plot, then it would take an unexpected turn.

When it came down to it though, it made perfect sense. Fletcher’s battle has always been with his own sense of worth and his usefulness.

In this final book, we get to see him not quite accepting his strengths, but coming to realise that his own fears and his empathy for everyone else is what makes him powerful.

Also so many times this book had me on the verge of sobbing but the very ending is just glorious.

As it should be, the circle of life continues and new growth springs from the roots of the old.

It’s so difficult to actually describe what this series has been about, but for me, it’s about the feeling of safety and the rightness of home.

I’m very sad to say goodbye to Rowan Harbor, but I’m absolutely convinced Devon, Wade, Jesse and Sean, Fletcher and Conner, and the rest of the town are really hidden away behind Isla’s magic wards having drinks in Cassidy’s bar and putting the world to rights over supper.

About The Author

Sam Burns wrote her first fantasy epic with her best friend when she was ten. Like almost any epic fiction written by a ten-year-old, it was awful. She likes to think she’s improved since then, if only because she has better handwriting now.

If she’s not writing, she’s almost certainly either reading or lost down a Wikipedia rabbit hole while pretending to research for a novel.
