BLURB

Romeo Bradly and Julius Shepherd moved to Blissville for the same reason: a fresh start. Romeo was looking for a school district where he could make a real impact in the lives of students and faculty, and Julius was eager to teach one of his passions to the best and brightest at a school with a nationally ranked science program.

But the sleepy little town offered them much more than they’d bargained for—quirky people, unlikely friendships, and an all-consuming attraction that turns them inside out.

When unexpected circumstances threaten to cancel the school play, Romeo’s theater background and Julius’s musical expertise make them the perfect pair to save the day. Working together so closely makes it harder for the men to ignore their growing feelings.

After all, the heart knows what it wants and doesn’t care about age gaps, race, or a professional conflict of interest. Romeo and Julius will learn that they have far more in common than they realize, and their differences will make them stronger if they give love a chance.

Their commitment to each other and the play will be tested when outside forces target them as a couple and exert pressure to cancel the production. Romeo and Julius vow to prove their love can conquer any challenge and will burn strong well beyond the curtain call.

Inside Out is a whimsical, May/December romance featuring a man learning to love again and a man falling in love for the first time. It is the sixth book in the Road to Blissville series and can be read as a standalone book or part of the series. This book contains sexually explicit material and is intended for adults 18 and older.

EXCERPT

It was nearly impossible to keep from checking the clock after receiving the text from Rome that he was on his way back to Blissville. I tried watching the football games on TV, but I couldn’t tell you the score or even who was playing. I also kept my ears tuned for the sound of his car pulling up outside.

The apartment I rented was above a garage and could only be accessed by walking through it, which might make many feel like they were trespassing. Wren did keep a classic car in the garage below and a ton of tools, so I was always cautious to keep the door locked. When I finally heard Rome’s car pull into the driveway and stop beside my car, I jogged down the steps and opened the outside door.

“Hey,” I said when he and Dolly reached me.

“Hey yourself,” he said warmly. I could see how badly he wanted to kiss me, so I stepped closer and met him halfway. I didn’t want there to be any hesitation between us unless we were in a place where PDA wouldn’t be appreciated.

“I wasn’t sure if I should kiss you in open view of Dare and Wren’s house,” he said, staring at my lips. “They might not be watching.” I moved until my lips were just a breath away. If he wanted me, he would need to come and get me. “Then again, they could have the binoculars out.”

Big Love and Bigger Love are sweet school-based romances

Big LoveBig Love by Rick R. Reed

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

This book wasn’t what I thought it was going to be but what it actually was is a good narrative, if a little bit muddled in my mind about which story it was telling.

I read it because I have an ARC of book two in the series to review, which is Truman’s story, and I wanted to read the set up.

This is a super sweet but also surprisingly angsty story which is all about owning your truths. I’m not usually a fan of the wife dying so a gay man can live his ‘real life’ but it’s handled well in this one.

I never felt like Dane’s wife had been a lesser person in his life and believed he had loved her for herself and not just because he was hiding and fighting his sexuality.

Seth was a sweetheart too and he knew just how to play his cards right to not only help Truman, but Dane as well.

Relatively low steam but still pretty emotionally engaging.

bigger-loveBigger Love by Rick R. Reed

My rating: 3.5 of 5 stars

This follow up to Big Love gives us Truman’s story solely and at times it’s as heartbreaking as parts of the first book were and at others, truly uplifting.

It’s rare for me to read a young adult romance, I tend to get irritated with the push and pull that usually provides the drama.

But this is Rick R. Reed, so I know better and sure enough, while Mike has his own fears and internal doubts to worry out, it never felt like it was a conscious decision to pull back from Truman.

Truman himself is as fabulously wonderful as he was in the first book and he’s still the focus of all the disquiet and disgust from people who disgrace themselves with their actions.

Patsy is still awesome, a fierce mama who will do anything for her boy, even turn her back on a potential happy for herself because of the way her son is treated, she is what every parent should be.

It was great to see Truman slowly build up a small friendship base as he got involved in a school production of Harvey and other loved how he threw himself 100% into it.

Mike’s grand gesture went a long way to gaining back my affections after he’d almost blown it with Truman and the lovely Epilogue left the future open with so much promise.

I’d love for there to be more, perhaps as Truman and Mike graduate and head off into the next stage of life but I’m also quite happy thinking of them years down the line in some city block apartment just being happy.

Guest Post: Eli Easton talks about her favourite High School romances

I am absolutely delighted to welcome the lovely Eli Easton to the blog today with a Guest Post looking at her favourite TV High School Romances

Eli’s Favorite High School Romances on TV

By Eli Easton

Welcome to the blog tour to celebrate the release of “Boy Shattered”! This is my first Young Adult book since “Superhero” in 2013. It’s set in a high school and features a romance between an openly gay valedictorian type student (Landon) and the school quarterback (Brian). When Brian is wounded during a shooting at their high school, Landon saves his life and the two become inseparable. It’s an enemies-to friends-to lovers story.

Although I haven’t written a lot of YA, I love to read it. I also love TV and films set at that age. There’s something magical about first love, when every feeling and sensation is new and there are so many “first times.” I think the romance in “Boy Shattered” captures that new/first love. I hope so!

There are two TV series with gay romances that I especially love that I wanted to share with you. One is Física o Química (English: Physics or Chemistry) and the other is SKAM.

Física o Química

I discovered this show while browsing around youtube and trolled the web until I found videos with English subtitles. It’s a Spanish TV series that ran from February 2008 to June 2011. It had an ensemble cast with storylines about various high school students and teachers. But the highlight (for me at least) is the story of Fer and David.

Fer (in back) and David (in front), played by Javier Calvo and Adrian Rodriguez

What I particularly like about Fer and David is the fact that their romance is just one plotline among many and it’s treated much like any other romance on the show. They have a loving and public relationship and neither the teachers nor the other students have a problem with it. That was very refreshing.

When their story begins, David is straight-acting and dates girls. Fer has come out. One night when they’re out with friends and drunk, David kisses Fer. After that, Fer is convinced David is gay and tries to get him to admit it so they can be together.

It’s a will-he-won’t-he scenario that has lots of UST and is compelling to watch. Eventually they become a couple and remain one for several seasons on the show.

If you want to check out Fer and David’s story, here’s a link to videos with English subtitles:

And here’s a lovely screen grab of Fer and David from a FoQ fan on tumblr:

SKAM

I saw people on Facebook and Twitter talking about Skam and loved it when I finally watched it myself. Skam is a Norwegian teen drama web series about the daily life of teenagers at the Hartvig Nissen School in West End Oslo. It was produced by NRK P3, which is part of the Norwegian government-owned NRK. Skam follows a new main character each season.

SEASON 3 is about Isak (played by Tarjei Sandvik Moe) and his romance with fellow student, Even (played the Henrik Holm). The romance starts with curious glances at one another to double dating (with girls) to a first kiss and an intense relationship.

It deals with Even’s bipolar disorder and how Isak helps him deal with that. It’s a beautiful teen gay romance.

Brian

You’ll make it out of here, Brian. I swear.I had everything—school quarterback, popular with girls, and my dad was proud of me. I told myself it didn’t matter no one knew the real me. And then I nearly died.

Landon saved my life. He’s the bravest guy I know. He came out a few years ago, proud and fierce, and he ran into gunfire to help others. Me, I’m a mess. Can’t even stand to be in a room with the curtains open.

But here’s the thing about losing it all: You get a chance to start over and be someone new. Only how can I move on when the two shooters who attacked our school were never caught?

And why do I feel like I’m still in the crosshairs?
Landon

Will you kiss me?

When I came across Brian Marshall, the hottest guy in school, dying on the cafeteria floor, I did what anyone would do. I tried to save him. His request surprised me, but I figured he needed comfort, so I kissed him on the forehead.

When he survived and came back to school, he was broken in body and mind. He still needed me, and soon we were unlikely besties. But what I saw at school that day woke me up.

I want to demand action on gun control, lead protests, raise my fist. I’ll tear the world down if I have to. And if I can get the man of my dreams and save the world at the same time? I’ll take it.

Only I didn’t understand that the horror at Jefferson Waller High wasn’t over.
