Playing by the Rules Ebook

Blurb

Ex-quarterback Davis Abernathy knows he’s on his last chance.

If he strikes out as Paxton Kelly’s coach, nobody else is going to call him. Not to get back on the field, and not to stand on the sidelines.

He’s got a lot to teach Pax, and as a second-year quarterback, Pax has a lot to learn. But Davis doesn’t anticipate the irresistible way they’ll be drawn together from their first meeting. He never could have predicted such a fierce and uncontrollable yearning—or that Pax would feel the same.

It should be easy to remember rules aren’t meant to be broken, and certain lines aren’t meant to be crossed, but the only thing that’s easy is falling totally, completely in love with Pax.

As Davis falls harder, Pax succeeding becomes just as important—and maybe more so—than resurrecting his own career. If he messes this up, his last chance isn’t all he’ll be sacrificing.

What he should be is focused on being the perfect mentor. But what he wants is Pax in his bed, Pax in his life, and more impossibly, to win Pax’s heart forever.

What are the rules?

The rules are simple:

  • Don’t crush on your Coach
  • Don’t become friends with your Coach
  • Don’t dance with your Coach
  • And definitely, most importantly, don’t fall completely, totally in love with your Coach

Paxton Kelly knows the rules are there for a reason, and he’s even planning on following them, but Davis, his new Quarterbacks Coach, doesn’t feel much like a coach. He’s only a year removed from playing himself, and instead he feels like a friend. And then a crush. And then, so much worse, the lover that Pax wants more than anything else.

Expect the thrill of the forbidden with a romance between a quarterback and his coach, a heartwarming friendship developing into a romance, steamy hookups, hot football action, warm and fuzzy team family feels, and an emotional, satisfying HEA!

Excerpt

Davis gave Pax credit, watching him after the game, because he put on a good face. The kind of face that a leader would wear when one of his players had an extraordinary game, and Dylan undeniably had. He’d tied the record for the most field goals made in a single game.

Davis thought he might be the only one who saw the frustration lingering in Pax’s face. The only one who looked close enough to see it.

After he finished with the press conference, Davis went to find him.

And found him, just as he’d expected, back to the wall in a tiny empty hallway a few doors down from the media room.

This was always where he went to decompress after a game, and after the media had finished tearing him apart.

Davis knew it wasn’t goddamn easy, and he didn’t begrudge Pax the quiet time he needed. Whatever was required to rebuild the confidence, to shore up the walls that everyone constantly kept trying to tear down.

When he appeared in the mouth of the hallway, Pax glanced up. “I just need another minute,” he said.

“It’s cool,” Davis said. He took the spot right next to Pax, leaning against the wall, too. Didn’t say anything else. Just watched.

It wasn’t really allowed to watch him this way.

But he did it anyway.

Pax’s head was tipped back, eyes closed, as the stress of the day slowly slipped off his face. He had a good week’s worth of scruff, golden brown and glinting even in the darkened light of the hallway. He’d unbuttoned his suit jacket, and Davis could see the shadow of his torso under the white shirt he wore underneath it.

Davis’ fingers flexed. He wanted so bad to reach out and touch, even though he knew he couldn’t.

But for one minute, for sixty seconds, he let himself really want it; for once, didn’t try to bury the desire, just felt it. It didn’t make this any easier, but there was something freeing about letting himself have this. Even if it was only for a brief moment.

He was on second sixty-seven when finally, Pax spoke.

“My hips weren’t loose,” he said ruefully.

“What? I’m shocked,” Davis teased.

“No, you’re not.” Pax sighed. “What are we gonna do about it?”

“How do you know there’s something we’re going to do about it?”

Pax shot him a look. Hot, singeing him around the edges. The desire flared, but this time, Davis stuffed it right back down, right back into its box, straining at the corners and joints. But it held. Barely.

They’d won the game today. They were four and two, and they’d won their last four games. Pax had come so far. The last thing Davis needed to do was lose himself.

“Okay, fine, yeah, I’m gonna do something about it. But you’re not going to like it.”

“Oh, I didn’t think I was going to like it.” Pax’s voice was very dry. He still hadn’t opened his eyes, but Davis knew that if he did, he’d see amusement in them.

And trust. So much trust.

Was it any wonder he couldn’t betray that?

“If it’s any consolation, I’m not sure I’ll like it either.” He already knew he wouldn’t. But it would make Paxton a better football player, and that was the only thing that mattered. Not all of his sleepless nights, not all of his pointless yearning, not any of the feelings that he kept trying to push away.

Pining for days and UST off the charts make this sports romance

Playing by the Rules EbookPlaying by the Rules by Beth Bolden

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

If there’s one thing Beth Bolden knows, it’s how to write a great sports romance and with Playing By The Rules she’s excelled her own incredibly high quality output.

Pining, there’s pining for days, weeks, months as the instant connect Paxton Kelly has with his new quarterback coach Davis Abernathy sparks from the pages and they fight with a forbidden attraction that slowly develops into a deep and abiding love.

Davis has been treated appallingly by his old team, so much so he’s had panic attacks and has retreated to his beach front home in South Carolina when he gets a call from the Piranhas unconventional Head Coach Asa Dawson (he’s up next and OMG I cannot wait for that romance!).

Pax has been bigged up as one of the game’s potential quarterback giants, but his first season with the Miami side was an absolute disaster, his confidence is shot and he’s struggling when Coach tells him to go pick up Davis from the airport.

Their first meeting is chemistry-laden and the attraction is instantaneous. But, as Pax discovers, there’s so much more to Davis than just his looks.

He’s a quiet man, he’s been badly hurt by being dumped by his team for a serial sexual assaulter and blamed for locker room disquiet but he has a footballer’s brain, he’s insightful and, most importantly of all, he’s kind and he knows how to get the best from Pax.

There’s UST off the charts, they get as close as two people can be without ever crossing the line that separates them because of Davis’ position as a coach until things come to a head in a surprising way, which I won’t spoil.

With her usual humour and gentle touch, Beth takes the two men on an emotional journey with turbulent highs and lows which eventually results in one of the sweetest first dates and then, inevitably, into glorious passion.

These two have a soul deep connection which is evident in everything they do, including potentially giving each other up when a chance comes for Davis to prove his former club were wrong in dumping him.

Guest appearances from the other wonderful quarterback/coach pairing Heath Harris and Sam Crawford from Beth’s adjacent Riptide book (The Rivalry) gives another layer to the story which the reader has seen from the outside in the first three books in this series.

The difficulties of the position Davis and Pax are in is handled with skill and the outcome is everything I was hoping for.

Until Asa gets his happy ending, this one’s my favourite so far in what’s been another outstanding collection of American Football romances from Beth.

NOTE: As ever, I beta read this book for Beth.

Alex

I’m the starting quarterback for the Portland Pirates, and I have a thing for my son’s teacher. Except I didn’t know the cute blonde on the beach with the giant dog was, in fact, my kid’s teacher until two months later at Open House.

Christian took my breath away during the second week of my two-week vacation at the beach and introduced me to things I never knew could feel so good and be so right. I think he just might be the one who inspires me to tell the world that this NFL quarterback is bisexual and in love with a man.

That is until I blew the best thing to happen to me since my kids were born. All I know is I have to get him back. I had to find a way to keep him.

Christian

I never imagined I would meet the love of my life while being bowled over on the beach by the overeager Newfoundland I was dog-sitting. But that’s exactly how I ended up on my back in the sand, wrapped in his arms and pressed into the sand by the six-foot-five dark-haired Adonis on the beach. Did I mention he had two beautiful children?

Our week together was worthy of a sexy modern-day fairytale full of promises about the future until he sent me the text that broke my heart. And how was I supposed to get over him when his adorable six-year-old son was in my class?

Find out how Alex and Christian ache to overcome some daunting complications to reunite in The Quarterback Keeper, Book One of The Package Deal Series.

Excerpt

What the hell had just happened? One minute, I was playing fetch with my dog; the next, I had my arms wrapped around the most beautiful man I’d ever seen, trying to protect him from the onslaught of their excitement.

Christian was cocooned in my arms, and the familiar tingling had returned at the mere touch of his skin. My mouth was only inches from his, and his eyes were blue pools of… pain? What the fuck?

“Oh, god,” I rasped, “are you okay?”

I untangled myself from him by gently rolling us onto our sides. Much to my utter horror, my lonely dick decided this was a good moment to become an iron shaft and press itself into his stomach. Mortified was not a strong enough word to describe how I felt about the situation.

“Uhh, I don’t know. My wrist is really hurting,” he replied, tears welling in his eyes. Even as he bit down on his lips to stop them from falling.

“Oh god, I’m so sorry. I tried to catch you from falling when the horses came running through,” I said, trying to use humor to make him forget about my driftwood poking him in the stomach. Damn, he smelled good. Would he taste as good?

Focus Alex! The man is hurt, for fuck sake.

“Don’t make me laugh,” he chuckled, but his brow was scrunched up. Clearly, he was still obviously in pain as he sat up once I had removed myself from pancaking him.

“Can I see it? I’ve had an injury or two like that in the past.” Christian pulled his arm from his chest and slowly lowered it into my waiting hands. The familiar tingling returned as I carefully studied it as if I were an orthopedic surgeon. Of course, I wasn’t, so I had no idea what was wrong with him.

“I don’t think it’s broken, but with bones in the wrist, you never know for sure without an x-ray,” I said gently, running my thumbs over the uninjured part of his skin.

“It hurts like hell.” He winced. “I’ll be okay. Just need some ice on it.”

“I think you should see a doctor. I’ll take you to the Urgent Care in town,” I said as I stood and waited to help him from the sand. I looked over to find both dogs lying in the sand, watching us like a tennis match. At least I wouldn’t have to corral them.

“It’s okay, Alex. I just need some ice on it and maybe some ibuprofen. I’ll be fine,” he tried to reassure me. I almost let it go until I saw him flinch and pull his knees to his stomach when what had to be a bolt of pain radiated up his arm.

Yeah, there was no way I was letting him go without getting checked out.

Emerson Beckett Logo

Who is Emerson Beckett? That’s a good question.

I’m a retired educator who loves all things romance and an avid reader and consumer of well-written M/M romance books.

My journey to becoming an author started with an idea I had one night while I sat reading on my sofa. That idea became an email that ultimately resulted in me editing for three wonderfully talented M/M romance authors. The third referral led to an opportunity to co-write with one of the most genuine and kindest people I’ve ever had the pleasure to know. (She’s my co-author for Quarterback Keeper.)

I’m a wife and a mother of three beautiful adults, one of which is trans and responsible for my love of this genre. All three have since left us with an empty nest that is now full of pets.
