Jared Langford is a happy man. The desk clerk at the Deerbourne Inn knows everyone in his cozy town in Vermont. He is accepted and loved by the community, but he’s missing someone special in his life.

Devastating news has brought journalist Xander Fortier to Willow Springs for some much-needed rest. He’s photographed every major conflict in the world for the last ten years, but being stateside has forced him to reassess the solitary life he’s been living.

Something in Xander’s gruff demeanor calls to Jared’s caring nature. Soon the men are spending time together, but Jared’s kisses might not be enough to keep Xander from leaving. Can the men find a happily ever after if they only have today?

“Finnigan’s is a block from here. Do you want to grab a drink?”

Beer sounded divine, but he was flagging. He’d spent the entire day hunched over the keyboard, and he was more tired than he ever remembered feeling. He hadn’t felt this exhausted even after three days without sleep in Helmand Province. Of course he’d been running on adrenaline that time. When he crashed, he’d slept around the clock. Being safe had allowed him to sleep like the proverbial baby. “I appreciate the offer, but I’m going to take a rain check. I’m tired.”

“Of course, I understand.” Jared didn’t meet Xander’s gaze, instead continued walking toward the inn.

“What’s that tune?”

“Sorry?” Jared stopped walking and pivoted.

“That tune. What are you humming?”

Under the streetlamp, Jared’s pinkening cheeks were clear. The young man blushed easily. Prettily. Endearingly.

“I, uh, well…” Jared gazed up at the streetlamp. “I was humming about dancing all night.”

Oh really. That was interesting. “Tell me more.”

“Well, I love Eliza Doolittle and I was thinking about, you know, the end of a nice evening.”

“Eliza…? Oh, right, George Bernard Shaw.”

“And Lerner and Loewe.”

“Ah yes, the musical.”

Jared’s gaze sharpened. “You don’t like musicals?”

“I do not not like musicals. I don’t do musicals, if you know what I mean.”

“I do know what you mean.” The hurt was obvious. Jared tried to school his expression, but he was definitely frowning.

Damn. “You know a guy can be gay and not love Barbra Streisand, right?”

Those blue eyes flashed. “Of course I know that. Just because she starred in several of my favorite shows doesn’t mean I expect everyone to like her. To like Broadway.”

Brazenly Daray

Blurb

For one sentinel, tradition is everything until he meets a pointy-eared photographer who is no elf.

Teverild is a man who refuses to allow anyone to call him an elf, despite his pointy ears. Having left his tribe behind centuries ago, Teverild is now a successful photographer. Although his phone contains the numbers of powerful people within the Council of Sorcery and Shifters, and they endeavor to include him in family and other important events, he rebuffs friendship. The concept of mates eludes him, and he doesn’t want that connection either.

As a sentinel, Skeleton Lord Cassius Daray strives for perfection. His purpose is to aid his people, and he works diligently to further the goals of the Sentinel Brotherhood. At home, Cassius enjoys being with his family and throws himself into his hobbies, but there is something missing. What Cassius wants most is to find a mate.

With a penchant for trouble, Teverild winds up on the wrong side of the law. His penance is to teach a group of sentinels the basics of his craft. Teverild wants to get the class over with, but his life changes forever when he meets Cassius. Drawn together immediately, they must overcome their ghosts if they want to forge a future and build a love that will sustain them both.

“Hi, again,” Teverild offered.

“Your class was wonderful; I learned a lot,” Cassius remarked as everyone teleported away.

“Thanks, I don’t even know half of what I said,” Teverild confessed, again surprising himself with his candidness.

“I’m so glad we finally met and that you’re my mate. Did you want to come and meet my family now?”

Teverild didn’t want to disappoint the smiling man in front of him, but his entire being recoiled at the word family. It was nothing personal against Cassius—in fact, Teverild already knew at least one member of his family. Arch Lich Chander Daray had saved Teverild by allowing him to join the Council, and he and Drystan had offered help in countless ways.

It was their attention that had inspired him to ink his skin with images of skulls that most people found macabre. To Teverild, they represented second chances, and he wondered, as he stared into the hopeful face of a man who had once been a skeleton, if Fate had kept him fascinated by such images because of Cassius. While that might’ve been a hopeful or fanciful thought, Teverild was too deeply rooted in grim reality to let it flourish.

“I can’t. I have an appointment to keep,” Teverild lied. Cassius’s crestfallen expression caused words to continue to sputter out. “Some other time maybe.”

“Are you free tomorrow?”

“I’d have to check my calendar,” said Teverild, sneaking in a step toward the door.

“I guess you must be really busy.”

“I prefer to be.”

Cassius’s grinned, making Teverild want to melt at his giant boots. “Which makes it that much more awesome that we finally met. I could kick myself for not going to Elf’s first shift now. We could’ve been together for years.”

It was a bit unsettling to Teverild that Cassius assumed they were simply going to be together because Fate had decreed it—but it also warmed him for some inexplicable reason.

“That was a spectacular day.”

“You took really great photos of Elf.”

“Thanks,” Teverild responded, edging closer to the hallway.

“Where are you going?”

Teverild blinked heavily. “I told you. I have an appointment.”

“I mean, do you have a car or are you using Dérive? I could walk you to the parking garage or to the teleporting station.”

“Oh, you don’t have to do that.”

“You didn’t answer my question, and I want to,” Cassius argued.

His mind filling with images of being stalked by a cloaked assassin, Teverild wondered how in the world he was supposed to get out of this mess he’d stumbled into. “I can walk on my own. It’s no big deal.”

The big shoulders slumped again, and Teverild acknowledged that he was already learning how easy it was to disappoint his mate.

“Okay, if that’s what you want, then I won’t keep pestering you. Can I text you later?”

“Sure…if you want.”

“Can I ask you one last question before you go?”

Teverild had a hand on the door, and he was somehow unsurprised that his attempt at an easy escape hadn’t succeeded. “Yeah. Okay.”

“Are you interested in trying to be mates, or would you prefer it if I didn’t bother you again?”

Explosively hot and packed full of all the feels

We Have Till Monday by Cara Dee

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Just like We Have Till Dawn this one is explosively hot and packed full of all the feels.

Anthony, Nicky’s older brother, has been basically cruising through life on half-speed without any great lows but no wonderful highs either when he wins a competition to cook with a famous chef he follows on social media.

But the reader knows that he’s not just won a chance to visit Nashville and cook with celebrity chef August King, but that August’s much younger partner Camden has been plotting ever since he saw Anthony’s feed for the Music Institute he runs with Nicky.

The story evolves in a beautifully organic fashion from the moment Anthony encounters August at the end of his ranch’s drive when he comes to get his bearings after driving from New York to Nashville.

It’s clear from the off that the sexual chemistry between all three men is off the charts. But there’s a complication Anthony hadn’t expected.

Camden is a little who regresses through a number of different age points, some including sexual behaviour, others not, and Camden knows August gets lonely when he’s essentially acting as a single parent when he’s regressed into his non-sexual state.

Which is why he chooses Anthony, he believes he could be the missing link in his relationship with August and help stop him feeling alone.

How this is navigated becomes an integral part of the narrative and Cara unfolds the story, which takes place over such a short period time but never manages to stray into “instalove” territory.

Relatively low angst, a thread of humour running throughout and the aforementioned steaming hot sex, makes this a perfect read.
