Some niggles but the final ending left me happy

My rating: 3.5 of 5 stars

I’ve got real mixed feelings for this book. Most of them are positive but there was the odd niggle which stopped me from falling completely into the narrative.

Both Sean and Cooper are well crafted characters, I thought the PTSD elements of the story were very well done.

However, at times I was irritated by Sean and his youth, which is probably more a me thing than a fault with the book!

As the tale progresses, it becomes ever clearer that more is hidden under the surface than first meets the eye.

I became less irritated with Sean and more desirous of him finding the right path to take him forward.

Cooper though, him I fell in love with from the start. His own baggage makes him evoke feelings of protection, and I just wanted to hug him.

Their falling for each other is inevitable. The chemical attraction is clear from their first meeting. And while this all happens again over a relatively short time period, it doesn’t have a feeling of instalove.

It’s perhaps not as closely connected to the Vino & Veritas store as some of the others, but it still has the same Vermont feel.

Overall, it’s a satisfying romance, and I felt it had a lovely conclusion.

A childhood in foster care taught Carey Everett to hold tight to what he has. Enlisting in the Marines gave him purpose, but a life-threatening injury ended his career—and took his leg. Now fully recovered, Carey’s happier than he’s ever been. He has a fulfilling job, a chosen family and, best of all, a cherished friendship with Jase DeSantis, the platoon medic who saved his life.

Jase knows how to take care of the people he loves. As the oldest of seven, and then a Navy corpsman, it’s what he was born to do. Still, he’s haunted by his actions overseas. Playing music with his band keeps the demons at bay, but it’s a battle he’s starting to lose.

After a week of sun and fun in San Diego, Jase and Carey’s connection takes an unexpected turn. With change comes a new set of challenges. For Jase, it means letting someone else into his deepest pain. For Carey, it’s realizing love doesn’t always equal loss.

In order to make their relationship work, they’ll each have to come to terms with their pasts…

…or risk walking away from each other for good.

Previously published, this book has been rewritten with a new cover and blurb.

 Blurb

Recovering addict Jamie Yorke has returned to England from California. With no home or family to speak of, he sticks a pin in a map and finds a small town in the Derbyshire Peak District.

Matlock Bath is a quiet place—he just needs to get there, keep his head down, and stay clean. Simple, right? Until a chance meeting on the flight home alters the course of his so-called life forever.

Ex-Army medic Marc Ramsey is recovering from life-changing combat injuries while pulling nights as a trauma specialist at the local hospital. Keeping busy is a habit he can’t quit, but when Jamie—so wild and beautiful—bursts into his life, working himself into the ground isn’t as compelling as it used to be.

Marc falls hard, but chaos lurks behind Jamie’s fragile facade. He’s winning his battle against addiction, but another old foe is slowly consuming him. Both men have weathered many storms, but the path to the peace they deserve might prove the roughest ride yet.
