Barbara tackles two tough subjects with sensitivity and produces a wonderful romance

A Long Way BackA Long Way Back by Barbara Elsborg

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

So very different from book one in the series, but just as amazingly written.

It’s an interesting subject to tackle, one I won’t spoiler, and Barbara does real justice to it without ever falling into overly am-dram detail.

There are two pretty big incidents in the book which are potential triggers, so I’d advise everyone to read the note and pay attention as they are graphically dealt with.

Did everything work for me? Yes, on balance it did. Even with the unlikely situations, the narrative ran true.

With a background in journalism, I absolutely believed those elements, some people in the industry are just total pieces of s**t.

The romance between Tay and Ink is wonderful. They’re the heart and soul of a story which is ultimately about hope.

Their attraction is clear from the start. They spark off one another and stimulate each other into making an effort to try for a ‘normal’ life.

I felt for Tay so much, having been through a similar experience with paralysis myself. I thought this particular plot thread was superbly executed.

Ink though, oh my lawd that boy broke my heart as he did his best in the harshest of circumstances to try and carry on regardless of what was chucked at him.

Jonty and Deven make guest appearances towards the end and I loved seeing them both still so happy.

We get introduced to a new character in this book, and I’m not sure if there is going to be more, but I’d love to see him find a happy ending too.

Both books in this series have tackled tough subjects with consummate ease and I hope for more

PS Dog is awesome.

Devan Smith needs to cool his anger. He needs to forget the lies and betrayals and work on resetting his life. What he’s not interested in is the guy with the piercings, bleached hair, and the smart, kissable mouth behind the reception desk.

Working the hotel reception is the only thing that’s stable in Jonty Bloom’s unstable life. His best friend has had a terrible accident, his ex refuses to move on, and his eight-year-old self is still waiting for his mother to collect him from school. Jonty needs his job. What he doesn’t need is the rude, arrogant, and hot as they come guy who’s rocked up demanding he be let into his room right now.

Thrown together by a freak accident, Devan and Jonty’s lives entwine, and neither wants to loosen the knot. Can the irrepressible Jonty be the reset Devan needs?

About The Author

Barbara Elsborg lives in Kent in the south of England. She always wanted to be a spy, but having confessed to everyone without them even resorting to torture, she decided it was not for her. Volcanology scorched her feet. A morbid fear of sharks put paid to marine biology. So instead, she spent several years successfully selling cyanide.

After dragging up two rotten, ungrateful children and frustrating her sexy, devoted, wonderful husband (who can now stop twisting her arm) she finally has time to conduct an affair with an electrifying plugged-in male, her laptop.

Her books feature quirky heroines and bad boys, and she hopes they are as much fun to read as they are to write.

The Making of Jonty Bloom
by Barbara Elsborg

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Barbara Elsborg has such a talent for writing about serious issues but without ever making the reader feel like it’s a heavy weight.

This book touches on (all off page and references in passing rather than detailed for trigger warning purposes) child neglect, physical violence, sexual assault and the effects of being stalked.

But it never feels like an angst driven narrative because she tempers the seriousness with the wonderful friendship and then relationship gush develops between Jonty and Devan.

The majority of the relationship development also happens over a relatively small amount of time, but it never feels like Insta love.

I absolutely loved Jonty, but I adored Devan for seeing the beauty in the younger man’s soul, for recognising that he was getting a real chance for happiness.

There’s also a smashing cast of secondary characters, and I’m so pleased that we’ll get Tay’s story next, and the sense of place was so strong.

I grew up with family in Alnwick, so all my childhood holidays were spent trekking around the places mentioned in this book and they’re spot on.

I’m even pretty sure I know where the secret beach north of Banburgh’s spectacular sand dunes is too 😁

I read this in one go because I just couldn’t put it down and o loved every bit of it.
