Book Blitz: Demon Magic and a Martini | Annette Marie

Demon Magic and a Martini | Annette Marie

The Guild Codex: Spellbound #4

Published by: Dark Owl Fantasy Inc.

Publication date: April 12th 2019

Genres: New Adult, Urban Fantasy

When I first landed a bartending job at the local guild, I didn’t know a thing about magic.

These days, I’m practically an expert on the different magical classes, but there’s one nobody ever talks about: Demonica.

Turns out they have a good reason for that. My guild is strictly hellion-free, because who wants to risk life and limb to control the biggest bullies on the mythic playground?

Well, some people do, and now a demon has been loosed in the city. My three best friends are determined to slay it, but even badass combat mages are critically out-magicked. And that’s not all. The monster they’re tracking—it’s not hiding. It’s not fleeing. It’s not leaving a trail of corpses everywhere it goes.

The demon is hunting too. And in a city full of mythics, it’s searching for deadlier prey.

If we can’t unravel the demon’s sinister motivations, more innocent people will die, but finding the answers means digging into dark secrets … and learning truths I never wanted to know.

Note: The three mages are definitely sexy, but this series isn’t a reverse harem. It’s 100% fun, sassy, fast-paced urban fantasy.

Author Bio:

Annette Marie is the author of Amazon best-selling YA urban fantasy series Steel & Stone, its prequel trilogy Spell Weaver, and romantic fantasy trilogy Red Winter.

Her first love is fantasy, but fast-paced adventures and tantalizing forbidden romances are her guilty pleasures. She lives in the frozen winter wasteland of Alberta, Canada (okay, it’s not quite that bad) with her husband and their furry minion of darkness—sorry, cat—Caesar.

When not writing, she can be found elbow-deep in one art project or another while blissfully ignoring all adult responsibilities.

Complex and intriguing introduction to this new fantasy series

apple boy cover finalApple Boy by Isobel Starling

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

There’s a lot going on here!

And it’s not concluded at the end of this first book in Isobel Starling’s new fantasy series either, but there is the start of a complex narrative which I’m eager to learn more of.

I believe the three books together will bring different characters’ backgrounds and stories so far into one over-reaching plot that will conclude once all is done.

First up was Adam and Winter and they’re very cute together and delightfully stumble their way not only into a relationship but also into an epic adventure.

It’s really hard to review this without giving the key parts away, which I’m not going to do, but let’s just say I was kept interested from start to finish even when it all got a little bit complicated.

The book itself is gorgeous, with internal illustrations and a stunning world map, there’s also a handy glossary at the start with a decent chunk of background information on each of the realms.

Like all good fantasy novels, it leaves as much unanswered as it does concluded so I can’t wait to see where the story goes next.

Marius Everhart is something even mages fear — a shadowmancer. His power marks him as cursed, a creature belonging to the Queen of Shadows. Marius escaped her realm with his memories corrupted and his sanity in tatters, managing to live a fragile, lonely existence at the edges of society.

Some might call Ayodele Sauveterre delusional. He prefers the term “optimistic”. With his homeland in danger from invasion, Ayodele will do anything to protect it, even recruit a shadowmancer.

Marius’s incredible power and gentle nature make him a perfect addition to Paladin Charm, a new mage guild dedicated to helping rather than exploiting the non-magical populace. The fact that handsome Marius also warms Ayodele’s bed is a wonderful bonus.

With support from Ayodele and his new friends in the guild, Marius begins to heal. He’s also quickly falling for the alluring mage, but Ayodele struggles with what’s forming between them. Past experience left Ayodele flippant but guarded, and Marius’s open honesty unnerves him.

As they grow closer, Paladin Charm prepares for a battle with impossible odds. And in the darkness, the Queen of Shadows waits to reclaim Marius and drag him back into a nightmare.

Ayodele followed Marius up to his room. They hadn’t said anything, and Marius wondered if he should, or what he should say. Marius stepped inside the room—mine, this is really all mine—and Ayodele closed the door.

“I’m not one to play coy when there’s something I want, and I know honesty is important to you, so I’m going to be honest.” Ayodele stepped close and slid a hand up Marius’s chest. “I want to have sex with you.”

That answered one question at least. Marius looked into Ayodele’s beautiful dark eyes, surrounded by gold and blue, then his gaze moved down to the man’s full lips.

Ayodele’s hand reached his shoulder and kept going up until his fingers brushed Marius’s neck. “So are you agreeable, or have I been misreading you?”

Marius lunged, his body almost moving on its own. He pulled Ayodele into his arms and seized the other man’s lips. They were even warmer and softer than Marius had imagined and tasted of the chocolate cream cake they’d had for dessert. For a moment there was nothing but the hot rush of sensation.

Then Marius remembered other lips, other kisses. A girl in the schoolyard, quick and awkward. A boy as they splashed in the stream. A woman beneath a starlit sky. She’d been murdered and he’d vowed his revenge, asking the Queen of Shadows to give him—

No, that wasn’t real. Was it?

He pulled back, forcing his mind into the present. “I don’t want to hurt you.”

Confusion crossed Ayodele’s face, then he blinked it away. “Worried you’ll break my heart?”

Marius put more distance between them, almost running into a chair. “I’m worried my mind will slip.”

“I have caused people to lose their minds in bed, but only in a good way.”

“You really aren’t afraid of me, are you?” Ayodele had proven it the past three nights, comforting Marius every time he woke from a nightmare, braving the wild shadows again and again.

“No.” Pale purple light covered Ayodele’s body as he took a slow step toward Marius.

“There. I used a protection spell.” His utter confidence sent Marius’s heart racing.

“If my mind wanders, I might get lost in my memories.” Marius said it more to himself so he’d remember this was a bad idea.

“Then I’ll have to make sure you stay focused on me.”

About The Author

Devin Harnois writes YA and Romance of the fantastical sort. Most of his books involve magic, monsters, and hope. Somehow they keep getting more queer.

When he isn’t writing he spends too much time on Twitter and plays a lot of Dragon Age.

In second grade he wrote his first story, a romance about two mice falling in love. He still has the original draft.
