A satisfying end to this series from Davidson King

The Haven Hart spin-off comes to a close with Ciro’s romance, and it’s an interesting one.

What I’ve really loved about all of this author’s books is that her characters aren’t ambiguous about the fact they’ve done bad things.

Whether that’s as a crime boss, an assassin, or, like Ciro, whose past involves dodgy contracts while serving his country.

When he gets caught up in a threat, through mutual friendship with local chef Xander Vayne, he’s not expecting to find a man he’s willing to die – or kill – for.

The suspense element of this one was a lot less involved in ‘mystery’ than others in the series. The likely perpetrator isn’t a secret.

Here the tension is built by a slow dragging of time as he picks off other chefs from Xander’s past.

Because of that, I didn’t have the same racing heart as the conclusion approached.

That’s not to say it wasn’t still an adrenaline packed race to rescue Xander from the clutches of the madman and I think it was handled perfectly.

I definitely had zero issues with quite how Ciro brought the situation to a Close and I was very happy to see Riordan on hand to help out.

I’m sad this is the end of this wee series and I’m very much looking forward to Davidson King’s next book, which all about Manos crime boss Christopher’s nephew Simon.

Their love story isn’t easy.

Every night Ledger stands on the stage of Joker’s Sin, the most popular gay nightclub in Haven Hart, mixing music. Many of the people who come through the doors want his attention, but lately he’s only had eyes for the red-headed bartender, Shane. When Ledger is invited to be on a panel at DJ Con, he asks for support from his friends at Joker’s Sin. To his surprise, Shane shows up.

For Shane, Ledger is everything he’s ever been attracted to in a person. They’ve danced around each other for a while, but finally getting to know the intense DJ one-on-one, he realizes there’s even more to Ledger than he ever knew.

Then craziness ensues. Someone sets their sights on Ledger, determined to make him theirs, and he and Shane find themselves fighting for their lives instead of living it. Whoever is behind this will stop at nothing to get Ledger in their arms.

With people getting hurt and dying around Ledger, can he keep the one man he’s just finally admitted he wants from a murderous fate, or will someone’s crazed obsession end it all?

The doors opened and I was about to say something when I heard a roar. I jolted, hitting my back against the elevator wall.

Ledger started laughing. “I forgot to tell you about Lion.”

My eyes widened. “You have a fucking lion?”

Ledger was laughing so hard he had to put his boxes down. “No, Lion is my pet. Come on, I’ll introduce you.”

I didn’t move at first. Ledger looked over his shoulder and cocked a brow as if to say, “Move it.” Slowly, I stepped forward into his living space. It was a huge open plan for sure, but I had trouble focusing on the design because every sound made me feel like something was going to jump out at me.

Once I got my heart to stop trying to beat out of my chest, and nothing tried to murder me, I took in the place. It was vast, the living room and kitchen one big area. The walls were painted slate gray and white throughout the entire area. As I moved farther in, I saw a wall that blocked off the huge space and assumed Ledger’s bedroom was there. When Ledger opened the mysterious door, I heard the roar again.

“Yeah, no. I’ll stay here,” I said.

He shrugged and went through the door. I stood there, waiting for screams. My imagination was picturing a large cat mauling Ledger to pieces. Maybe I should’ve run to the elevator—self-preservation and all.

“How’s my fierce baby?” Ledger was talking in baby tones, and I wondered what was wrong with him, but still, I didn’t move. “Come here. I want to introduce you to someone.”

I was about to shout to tell him not to bother when I heard another voice. “Friend or foe?” What the hell?

When Ledger stepped out I saw a bird…on his shoulder. A flipping bird. It was gray mostly, with white around its eyes. I spotted some red below and I figured that was his tail.

“Shane, this is Lion, Lion, I’d like you to meet Shane.”

A helter-skelter of a rush to the ending makes this one heart-stoppingly good

Joker’s Sin resident DJ Ledger gets the spotlight turned on him for this latest romantic suspense from Davidson King.

There’s been sparks flying between him and barman Shane through both the other books in this series, so I was going in with lots of expectations.

Most of which were met, I’m pleased to say. And, while I think the villain of the piece is perhaps a bit too obvious from their first appearance, it still didn’t distract from the overall tension waiting for the ‘plot hammer’ to fall, as it were.

There’s still a build up in the pace right up and beyond the usual 75% mark 🙂 which I always appreciate.

As the book hurtled towards the last 10% I was wondering just how on earth it was all going to be wrapped up before the book ended! Would Meredith give us a cliffhanger for the first time in this series?!

Well, you’ll be glad to hear that’s not the case and there’s a helter-skelter of heart pounding moments leading up to the epic conclusion.

As for Ledger and Shane, they are ridiculously cute together. They’ve danced around for so long that most of the relationship angst has happened before they ever kiss 😁

I loved that they both knew the other was different, special, from the off and, while there was an odd hiccup of hesitation on both sides, once they decided they were in, there were no more doubts.

This book also has one of the best pet secondary characters, I’ll leave you to discover all about that special creature on your own!

We get a fab guest appearance here from Riordan too, and I was delighted to see him, no mention of Teddy though, who I adore 😫

Now, after the massive involvement of Ciro in this book, he’s got to be getting his own next please Mere?! ❤
