Prince of Killers is just my kind of romantic suspense

Prince of Killers EbookPrince of Killers by Layla Reyne

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I knew this was going to end with a cliffhanger and, you know what, I didn’t care because Layla Reyne is rapidly turning into one of my top of the tree romantic suspense authors and if I have to wait to get the next instalment, then so be it!

This is a powerfully strong opener to her new San Francisco set trilogy, packed with interesting and intriguing characters, twists and red herrings, double crosses and unexpected plot lines, a strong sense of time and place and, above all else, two utterly compelling main characters whose chemistry sparks off the page.

I’m not sure how things are going to move on from where Layla left the ending, but that twist was one I hadn’t seen coming and it will have massive implications for both Hawes and Dante going forward.

Argh, there’s so much I want to say but the narrative is so intricately intertwined that I can’t even leave hints, so I’ll just say – read this book!

Protection has its price, but so do fantasies…

Fantasy Week happens twice a year at Crave, and it’s always a big hit—a way to live out your wildest fantasy in a safe, sane, and consensual manner.

But when Cade comes in with his Fantasy Week invitation, he’s not happy about it. He’s stoic as hell and his preferences don’t seem to match his fantasy at all…and yet, despite that, he enjoys himself with Tegan and Vic. At least at first.

When it becomes glaringly apparent that the fantasy isn’t something Cade’s comfortable with, it’s confusing for the men he’s been paired with, and Tegan and Vic put a stop to the scene immediately.

What Cade doesn’t know is that Tegan and Vic are not only co-owners of Crave, but they’re also owners of a mercenary group, Gray Ops, that’s run out of Crave. They’ve also been circling each other for years… but nothing sparks until their session with Cade.

What happened in Room 4 is something none of the men can forget…but it’s got nothing to do with a fantasy and everything to do with blackmail. Can Tegan and Vic help Cade keep his secrets, while keeping all of them safe at the same time? Because the threatening to spill out aren’t only Cade’s…

*This series is set in the MEN OF HONOR world, in the bar called Crave from Bound By Honor

Excerpt

Just when you thought you’d gotten away from this shit, you’re back in.

Oz stopped in front of the door marked Room 4 and handed Cade his card. “Give this to the first man you see inside the room—that’s when your fantasy starts, so now’s the time for any last-minute questions or concerns.”

“I just need to do this.” His heart thudded in his chest. He took a long gulp of water, and Oz put a hand on his arm.

“Hey, it’s normal to be nervous, but this is supposed to be fun. Freeing. Nothing happens that you don’t want. Remember, red and yellow, okay?”

Right—fun and freeing. Cade wanted to tell him that this was an obligation for someone he loved, because of someone he hated who, for all he knew, might show up behind this door…but instead, he simply nodded, handed off his glass…and walked inside.

The door closed behind him as he waited for his eyes to adjust to the low lighting in the room. Later, he’d notice the bed in the corner, the bench, and various BDSM tools, but his immediate focus couldn’t help but narrow, with a laserlike intensity, on a man who took up all the space in the room.

That force of nature stood casually, leaning against the wall, his gaze bent on exposing and seducing and Jesus, he was goddamned beautiful in that hot, badass kind of way with short, spiked, almost white-blond hair that made him look fierce. He was taller than Cade and broader, but his body was honed from whatever work he did for a living and not simply gym muscles. Cade could definitely tell the difference. This man was capable.

This man would break him. And he’d have fun doing it.

Cade shifted, not sure what to do next. Finally, he held out the card and said, “Hey, I’m Cade.” Like maybe the guy didn’t know who he was, or why he was here.

The man’s dark-blue eyes caught him, held him in place. “Hey, I’m the one who’s going to make you scream.”

His voice was a deep drawl that ran like warm honey down Cade’s spine. He fought a shudder and lost, and the man graced him with a wicked smile.

Man up. Get it over with. Cade straightened his spine and waited for the order.

It came far too quickly.

“Strip. Now. There’s no reason to keep your clothes on for what you’re here to do.”

Neve Wilder made me want with this delicious romance

Want Me CoverWant Me by Neve Wilder

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Sexual awakening stories are one of my favourite tropes and when that’s combined with Neve Wilder’s ability to fashion believable characters exploring sex in extraordinarily hot ways it can only be a winner.

As a newsletter subscriber, I’d received each part of this delicious college age new adult romance in serial format, but I’d been holding off reading them until all was done.

Well now not only is it done, it’s got an extra chapter and a fabulous epilogue to round it out and it’s glorious.

Nate and Eric are combustible, they’re all blazing passions and conflicted – on Nate’s part at first – emotions but their connection is clear to see.

I love this pair so hard, they’re shameless in how they make the other one feel but it’s not without complications.

I’m not going to spoil the whole plotline but the journey Nate goes through to realising he is in love with Eric is so well done.

BLURB

Two roommates. One calculus exam. A whole lot of extracurricular activity.

Nate

Living with four other guys, it’s bound to happen.

Every guy’s been caught taking care of business at least once, right?

It shouldn’t be a big deal.

But I don’t know Eric as well as my other roommates, and things are a little awkward now.

He’s a loner. A mystery. Quietly confident. Smart.

Sexy as hell.

I’ve been happily subsisting on the typical frat guy diet of booze and sorority girls.

But the way Eric looked at me that night?

There was something there.

Something that’s got me curious.

Something that’s stirring up feelings I thought I’d left behind for good.

Something that’s making me think I’m not as straight as I thought I was.

I can’t get him off of my mind.

I don’t think I want to.

So when he offers to help me study for a midterm I’m convinced I’m going to fail,

I take him up on it.

It’s innocent.

Probably. Maybe.

There’s no way I could’ve known what it’d start…

This is a super steamy standalone new adult/college MM romance with HEA that unfolds across six “episodes” following Nate and Eric. Now bundled up in one collection with a bonus episode for a seamless reading experience. 87,000 words.

EXCERPT

Just act normal, I told myself as I walked into the kitchen the next morning. With four other roommates, the small, brightly lit space was usually a zoo in the a.m., all of us scrambling around each other dumping cereal into bowls, frying eggs, or toasting Pop-Tarts. None of us were gourmands except Jesse, and he grumbled as my elbow knocked his when I passed by the stove where he was making some kind of omelet that smelled delicious. Not that he’d be sharing it with any of us, the greedy bastard.

My stomach growled as I headed toward the fridge. After a quick glance around, for a second I thought I was home free. Until I spotted him tucked in the dining nook, dark slashes of hair hiding his face where he sat at the table bent over a textbook. He had his arm curled around it protectively, a pen tapping restlessly against the top of the page. Eric. Shit.

As if he knew I’d stuttered to a stop upon spotting him, he glanced up, met my eyes, and lifted a brow. “’Sup?”

I upnodded him and wrenched open the fridge, burying my face inside it as my cheeks flamed.

It was a perfectly typical greeting between us, and I reminded myself of that as I pulled a carton of milk from the fridge and sniffed it before setting it on the counter and rummaging through the cabinet for some cereal. Any cereal. I didn’t care at that point. I was distracted thinking that Eric was watching me, but when I glanced over my shoulder to check, his attention was drilled into his textbook.

Ansel wandered in next, lanky body drenched with sweat from track practice.

“You’re stinking up the kitchen,” Jesse said.

“I literally just walked in. You must be smelling your face.”

Jesse flicked a bit of egg at him, which Ansel picked up from the floor and popped in his mouth while I dumped cereal into my bowl. My other roommate, Mark, grabbed the cereal box from me and stuffed his hand inside, coming out with a handful of Cheerios he tipped into his mouth.

“Caveman,” I accused, and he grinned.

I hopped up on the counter to eat and tried not to look over at Eric again. I’d already established that he wasn’t giving me weird looks, so I told myself to relax.

“Which pledge should we get to DD for the mixer Thursday?” Mark asked, leaning up against the island across from me. I reached for the empty bowl in his hand and dropped it in the sink next to me, shaking my head.

“I can’t go. Huge calc midterm Friday, and I’m 90 percent sure I’m going to fail.”

Movement in the corner of my eye. Eric glanced up at me, then looked down again. My stomach flipped on itself, then sank. When my cock gave a twitch, I ground my teeth and set my cereal bowl in my lap. What the ever-loving fuck?

“Dude, come on. For an hour.” Mark was my fraternity brother, the only one in the house. Ansel was a friend of Mark’s from high school, and Jesse was my dorm roommate freshman year.

“Nope. I like my scholarship too much. You should get Braden to DD, though.”

“Funbuster.” Mark shot me a finger gun that I shrugged at; then he picked up his backpack off the counter and trotted toward the back door. Ansel disappeared, probably to shower, and Jesse was sliding his omelet onto a paper plate. Seeing the writing on the wall, I scarfed down my cereal. I didn’t want to be alone in the kitchen with Eric. It was a stupid, wimpy reaction, but it was what it was.

Jesse ducked out of the kitchen with his omelet just as I polished off the milk in my bowl. I hopped from the counter, gave the bowl a quick rinse, stuck it in the dishwasher, and was on the way to the door.

“Nate.” Eric’s deep baritone cut my stride in half. I liked the way he said my name, though—the way he said anything, really. Always had. He had a trace of an accent, having spent much of his childhood overseas. Or at least that’s what he’d told us. For sharing a house, I didn’t know him that well, but he’d responded to our ad on the U’s online forum, and he’d seemed all right enough when we first met him. He kept to himself, mostly.

“Yeah?” I said it before I committed fully to turning around, and even I could hear that I sounded kind of annoyed. I didn’t mean to, it was just—

“If you need some help with calc tonight, hit me up. I got an A in it last semester.”

He’d never offered me help before, and it wasn’t like he didn’t know I was taking the course. I bitched about it all the time.

I looked him over like his motivation would become clear. It didn’t. His expression was open and polite, generous mouth pitched in a half-curled smile that seemed genuine. That knot formed in my stomach again. What the fuck was wrong with me?

“I’m probably good. But thanks.”

“I’ll be around if you change your mind.”

“Yep.”

I left, bounding up the stairs to grab my backpack. When I came back down, I went out the front door so I didn’t have to go through the kitchen again.

About the Author

Neve Wilder lives in the southern US, where the summers are hot and the winters are…sometimes cold. She is a mom to three rambunctious weebeasts who have joined forces in a mission to carpet the family home with toys and small items that really suck to step on at six in the morning.

She reads promiscuously across multiple genres, but her favorite stories always contain an element of romance. Incidentally, this is also what she likes to write. Slow-burners with delicious tension? Yes. Whiplash-inducing page-turners, also yes. Down and dirty scorchers? Yes. And every flavor in between.

She believes David Bowie was the sexiest musician to ever live, and she’s always game to nerd out on anything from music to writing.

And finally, she believes that love conquers all. Except the heat index in July. Nothing can conquer that bastard.

I’m so glad Kieran and Bennett got their “one more day”

Close-up portrait of a handsome young man with brave manly face.
If We Could Go Back
by Cara Dee

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I’ve been pondering for ages just how to review this book.

Do I focus on the brilliant way Cara Dee makes you root for a couple who are breaking a romance taboo?

Do I focus on the narrative which takes you on a five-year journey from tentative friendship, through to genuine affection and into a deep-rooted forever love?

Do I focus on how life isn’t black and white but made up of various shades of grey, some much darker than others, and how Bennett and Kieran struggled throughout their affaires de cœur?

Or do I focus on how this book is about love, about how it finds us in the most unlikely of places at times and how the journey to a lifelong happy ending is often paved with broken glass and shards of other peoples’ pain?

Let me just say that I adored this book. I adored Bennett and Kieran, I loved their collective kids, I loved Bennett’s dad and his sister, I loved Kieran’s sister Grace and his brothers Des and Con. I hated Kieran’s other family. I felt sorry for Maggie and I was utterly indifferent to Allison.

“You’re my ‘If I could just have one more day’ person. You know what I mean?”

Yes Kieran, I know what you mean and I’m so glad you and Bennett got your one more day.

As a PS, this cover also features one of my all-time favourite models so that’s another bonus point 😉

Explosive final draws Halo and Viper’s love story to a close

ANGEL AMAZONAngel by Ella Frank & Brooke Blaine

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Ella and Brooke bring the first part of their Fallen Angel trilogy to a close with an explosive final which – while it doesn’t answer all the questions – leaves Halo and Viper in a pretty sweet place and looking at a future together.

Angel has all the insane chemistry and volcanic hot sexy times readers should have come to expect with this pairing, but there’s also a whole load of vulnerability and quite a bit of heart-searching before this couple settle into a state of contented bliss.

Tensions come from external sources, Halo and Viper are all in throughout this instalment, but pressures from the music business itself, their same-sex pairing in a rock band, a new manager and Viper finally meeting Halo’s parents, all conspire to keep the narrative flowing.

I’ve really enjoyed this series, it’s a whole load of sexy fun and an easy read and I’m looking forward now to seeing how Killian manages to get new band manager Levi to break his no sex with the client rule.

In the hands of this pair, I’m sure it’s going to be another epic ride.

Utterly brilliant Sci-Fi exploration of what makes us love

Earth Fathers Are WeirdEarth Fathers Are Weird by Lyn Gala

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Well, that was absolutely brilliant. I had no idea what to expect really with this book, my first from Lyn, but when Shin asked if I was willing to review an ARC, I was intrigued.

I loved pretty much everything about this, it’s funny, it’s sexy, it’s an exploration of just what actually defines love and how it’s possible to fall for an asymmetrical tentacle creature without realising it.

The idea of Earth being off in some boring backwater of space that other sentient beings ignore because humans don’t have multiple limbs or tentacles really tickled me.

Max’s confusion at what happened to him following what he thought was an alien invasion but which turned out to be the equivalent of a police chase, was seriously funny.

Lyn Gala’s a total genius though as she explores how Max begins to communicate and improve the ‘Babelfish-like’ translation program on the ship he lands himself on to work his passage back to Earth.

How do you define hurt or emotional heartbreak when it’s a literal alien concept?!

Considering all the tentacles, there wasn’t as much sexy times as I’d perhaps been expecting, but the relationship which develops between Max and the octopus-like owner of the ship, who he calls Rick, is totally believable and quite emotional.

And the offspring? Too cute for words 🙂 This book was fab, so thanks Shin for putting it on my radar.
