Rush

All I want is to finish college, live life as a musician, and love the man of my dreams. That man, however, is Simon Manos, nephew of crime boss Christopher Manos, and there’s a war brewing on the streets of Haven Hart. Achieving my dreams has to be done while ducking bullets, trying not to get blown up, and hoping enemies don’t kill me.

Simon

I love Rush and want him to have everything he could ever hope for—all that his father denied him. As the heir to the Manos family business, it’s not quite that simple; I have responsibilities to fulfill. Haven Hart is getting dangerous, enemies need to be dealt with, and unfortunately, our dreams of the future must be put on hold.

We call on old friends and band together to face a common threat. When we’re forced into hiding, the situation escalates and the odds don’t seem to be in our favor. We do the only thing we can…stand our ground to the bitter end. As our lives start to fall apart, the unasked question is posed: Will someone have to make the ultimate sacrifice to save everyone?

This book follows after Secret Simon. It’s highly recommended you read that first.

Excerpt

Simon

“Mace, stop!” I tried walking faster to get away from him, but he was clearly inhuman and able to keep pace with me.

“It’s something I learned while doing yoga, though. Bill and I were able to get creative with it in the bedroo—”

“I swear, if you keep talking, I will shoot you.”

He rolled his eyes. “Sure. As I was saying, you take your leg—”

“Mace, you’re fired.”

His laughter echoed through the large foyer of the Manos mansion. He wasn’t deterred. “Some stretching is required before you begin.…All the stretching, if you get my meaning.” When he winked, I groaned.

“Sadly, I do understand.” I stopped walking, and I chuckled when Mace wasn’t prepared for that and tripped on the carpet.

“What the—” He glared at the offending floor, then looked at me. “Why’d you stop?”

“Mace, remember when I was younger, and you never wanted to taint my mind with horrible things?”

He pursed his lips, his gaze shifting upward. “Nope, I don’t.”

“Well, I do. Let’s pretend I’m thirteen and—”

“Eew.” Mace took a step back. “I’m not role-playing with you!”

Of course that was the moment Bill, Mace’s partner, and Snow, my stepfather, walked out of the study.

“Shit.” I sighed, all energy leaving my body. Where was Rush? I needed him home. He had a way of shutting Mace up.

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Simon and Rush’s story continues with Liam Brennan still threatening the Manos family and Eight’s chance of happiness.

While I enjoyed this one, it didn’t grip me as much as some of the others in the series have done.

The pacing was okay, but it felt at times like it was hastily throwing out incidents interspersed with a sex scene to get to the ending.

That’s not to say the sex scenes occurred too frequently, I think they were pitched right for the narrative but there wasn’t much else going on besides them and bits of the Manos empire exploding.

I think, for me, the biggest difference was that I’m pretty sure in the past books, Christopher Manos would never have let the thing that happens to put Simon and Rush in a vulnerable place actually go ahead.

There’re a lot of casualties in this book too, although most are ‘red shirt’ equivalents, and at times I was wondering who else was going to take a bullet.

What I did love though was the plotline for how they’d deal with the Brennan threat long term. I liked seeing Fred again and the growth of friendship between him and Rush which had been hinted at in the first book.

And I do love the Haven Hart setting as a whole, the men are unashamedly open about the lives they lead and the lives they take. They’re not afraid of getting their hands bloody in the name of protecting family.

It was also cool to catch up with my faves Mace and Bill, as well as Black, some of his team, and with Poe.

I dunno though, none of them seemed as efficiently deadly as they were in their own stories and they were wrong-footed a bit too much for my liking!

Overall though, it was another good read and the Epilogue is a lovely hint at what the future might bring.

Another fabulous entry in this new Haven Hart spin-off series

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I’m loving this new series from Davidson King.

It always amazes me how authors come up with different plots for mystery/suspense series and how they manage to wrap everything which should make the reader go what?! and just make it work.

This one is a doozy, featuring our louche head barman Max, last seen getting yelled at for screwing everything that moves in book one of this series, and the delightfully named Sparkles, one of the club’s patrons and superb dancer.

The suspense plot involves a secret in Sparkles’ past and I liked how, as with book one, all the various members of the Joker’s Sin crew all work together to protect their found family.

No spoilers here, suffice it to say I was more than happy with the payoff that the villain ended up with, served him right for being an utter dick!
