Excerpt

He leaned against me, taking a swig of his water and staring out at the moon, hanging over the ocean like a giant silver coin. “It’s really perfect for a honeymoon, isn’t it?” He smelled of the resort soap, jasmine and sea salt, and the natural tang of manly sweat. It wasn’t something I’d ever thought of as sexy before, but on him, sitting there on the beach, it really was.

I kissed the top of his head and rested my cheek against his hair. “It is. Your honeymoon’s gonna be the best when you have it for real. Maybe your husband’ll rent the penthouse and keep you here a month. Nothing but sun and sea and a giant heart-shaped bed.”

He chuckled at that, swallowing his bite of sandwich before answering. “There are no heart-shaped beds anywhere in this resort. This isn’t the eighties.”

“Heart-shaped hot tub?”

“Now those, we have,” he agreed, and turned to look up at me, pupils enormous in the dark. “I don’t need that, though. As long as he’s here, and not in my apartment, fucking Ian.”

“Sweetheart, I wouldn’t fuck Ian with someone else’s dick,” I promised, on the assumption that Ian was the best friend. I might have been offering to take him on a honeymoon, but I wasn’t sure anymore. The conversation had gone around in a circle, and all I knew was that I wanted to take the sadness out of his eyes.

Apparently it worked, since he giggled, shoulders shaking and eyes lit with mirth. “What about me?”

I grinned as I leaned forward and gave him a peck on the lips. “Not planning on needing anything but my own for you.”

When he gave me a dreamy smile, I leaned in again and took his mouth, wrapping one hand around the back of his neck and pressing in. He gave a tiny whimper and clung to me, fingers wrapped tight around my arms.

When I pulled back, he stayed there, eyes closed and lips parted, breath coming in short pants. “I’m going to need you to go ahead and prove that.”

It’s a me thing but this romance just didn’t spark my fire

Who We WereWho We Were by Melissa Collins

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I don’t know what it is about me and this author but, once again, everything is on paper for a book that I should absolutely adore but I end up feeling vaguely disappointed with.

I’m sure it’s a me thing as there is a lot of really good things about this romance. It’s a second chance one, it’s a steamy read, it has well-developed characters and world building.

But, at the end of my read, I was left a bit flat. I spent half the time wanting to punch one of the MCs and the other half telling number two MC to get a backbone.

The big reveal I had guessed the main element of as soon as it was alluded to and I honestly don’t think it played out in a way which justified all of Ryan’s dickish behaviour towards Quinn at all.

I just couldn’t buy into why Quinn would have waited 12 years pining for someone who had treated him like he didn’t matter.

Oh yeah, and Patrick was an utter arse and everything to do with his relationship with Ryan read like an overly dramatic soap opera.

I suspect most of this criticism is just me though so give it a go if you want a romance which spans two eras.

#ARC kindly received from the author in return for an honest and unbiased review.

Jackson Lewis isn’t a typical werewolf. He isolates himself in a small town outside Spokane and dedicates himself to making his business—Lone Wolf Brewery—a success. If it leaves him little time for romance, he’s okay with that. His soul mate could be out there somewhere, but he isn’t actively looking.

So he’s in for quite the shock when he literally bumps into his soul mate—Leo Gallagher, an adorable, nerdy, vibrant music therapist who’s Jackson’s polar opposite.

But he’s human. And a man.

Jackson is straight—or at least he’s always assumed so. Though he can’t deny his attraction to Leo, it’s a lot for both of them to deal with.

While Jackson and Leo figure out what their future might hold, they face prejudice from both the human and werewolf communities—including a group of fanatics willing to kill to show humans and werewolves don’t belong together.
