The Gods have come to San Francisco…

Cassius Black and Morgan King’s trip to Ivory Peaks to uncover clues about their past takes an unexpected turn when a rift materializes and war demons attack the capital. Having saved one world by the skin of their teeth, they return to Earth, only to find it has been rocked by ominous quakes bearing a close resemblance to the phenomenon that nearly destroyed the Dryad kingdom.

After defeating demons that emerge from a crevasse in San Francisco, Cassius and Morgan rescue the Wild God Pan from the bottom of a rift with the help of Victor Sloan and the city’s otherwordly. But instead of thanking them, Pan makes a startling demand: rescue his lover and prevent the Spirit Realm from being destroyed, and he will reveal the truth about who Cassius and Morgan are.

Help comes from an unexpected source when a pair of Reapers visit the city and Cassius, Morgan, and Victor soon go hunting for a missing deity who may hold the key to saving all the realms.

Can they free the immortals from their prisons and find the powerful artefact that can bend the mind and will of even a God? Or will the enemy who has long manipulated them from the shadows win this war and destroy everything they have come to care for?

Spirit Realm

The wrath of a God can destroy worlds.

The words resonated in Cassius Black’s mind as he fought the unearthly powers lashing at him. Ice and snow wreathed the air in a violent storm that sought to sap him of his will and freeze his limbs. Frozen grass crunched under his foot when he took a step forward, the smell of winter a clean, cold scent sharp enough to bite. He gritted his teeth and forged ahead.

To fall now would mean the destruction of this world and the annihilation of countless others.

Light flared on Cassius’s flesh and armor as he called upon his demigod powers, the divine energy melting the frost creeping along the metal and piercing the shadows suffocating the space around him. He could sense Morgan King in the distance, the angel’s soul core a point of heat that echoed with his own across the thick, white veil separating them. The demigod’s black wind and Dryad magic made the air howl as he held back the God screaming at them.

There was another with him. A man Cassius had thought he knew better than most. A demon whose true powers had finally manifested during this battle.

Victor Sloan was more than he had claimed to be, just as Cassius and Morgan were. Whether this was by design or by omission was still unclear.

One thing was certain though.

Whatever twisted fate had connected Cassius and Morgan before the Fall, Victor had played a part in it. Just like that time under the cathedral in San Francisco, when the man who had manipulated Chester Moran into tearing the Nether open had revealed his hatred for them and given them a glimpse of their pasts, but they had only seen a fraction of the truth.

Cassius scowled.

Now’s not the time to dwell on that! I need to see this through or there won’t be a future left for us to find that bastard and get the answers we need!

A shape finally loomed out of the tempest. It was a giant oak tree, one that soared some two hundred feet above the ground and bore roots that meandered deep into the sacred forest.

A figure stood beneath it.

The demigod glowed with the fury of winter, his eyes cold and unseeing. The radiance emanating from his body and the divine weapon he wielded on his head barely held the darkness swathing him at bay.

Cassius looked up, his preternatural sight piercing the inky squalls shrouding the land in eternal gloom. His heart thumped heavily against his ribs.

The sky rippled far above the frozen branches of the oak tree, the boundary protecting the realm he stood in splintering under the power of the Frost Crown. The ground cracked beneath his feet.

Cassius’s alarmed gaze found the comatose demigod once more. He focused on his body, knowing he had only one chance at this. A glimmer emerged, one that flickered in and out of sight.

Let’s hope I’m right about this!

A shape loomed out of the storm. It grabbed the frozen figure bearing the Frost Crown before he could react, its colossal arms closing tightly around him.

“Now, Awakener!”

Cassius clenched his jaw, closed the distance to the captive demigod, and stabbed him in the heart with the weapon bequeathed to him. At the far end of the meadow, beyond the angel and the demon restraining him, the Wild God bellowed in rage and despair.

“Rayne, does it ever stop being exhausting?” Caelan asked quietly.

His advisor kept his eyes moving around the area, searching for attackers, but he tilted his head at Caelan to indicate that he was listening. “What’s that?”

“Wondering if you can trust someone.”

“I learned long ago to work under the assumption that no one is trustworthy until you understand exactly what they want most in life.” He paused and the hint of a smile lightened his expression. “However, the exhaustion fades when you surround yourself with the few people you can trust without question. Lean on them and let them protect you.”

“We’ve got you, Cael,” Drayce added.

The next breath was easier, and so was the one after that. They had his back both figuratively and literally. Their goal was the same—the protection and salvation of Erya.

Eno turned toward them and nodded. Drayce started first, a gun in one hand. As they reached Tomas, the Royal Guard nodded briefly and led them down another street and through the side entrance of a small warehouse. Caelan thought he caught a glimpse of some armed men on the rooftops, watching the street, but they were past them too fast to get a good count.

Stepping inside, Caelan nearly tripped at the sight of at least fifty men and women spread around the open space. Their clothes were worn, dirty, and ragged. Too many of them looked painfully thin, their faces too gaunt. Soldiers and citizens left to fight for their homes on too little food. Caelan needed to fix this now.

“Your Majesty,” Tomas said, jerking Caelan’s gaze to him. The old soldier had dropped to one knee, his right hand pressed to his chest over his heart, and his head bowed. “My life for Erya. My blood for the crown. My soul for the Godstone.”

A wave crashed through the room as every man and woman dropped to a knee and repeated the vow. It was the same vow every soldier gave when they entered the Royal Guard. They lived it. As long as they were a Royal Guard, they were expected to give everything to the protection of Erya, the crown, and the Godstone. It was why none of them dared to marry until after they retired from service. They allowed nothing to come between them and the vow.

Caelan was left shaken to his very core. It was as if all the air had been sucked from the room and a thousand-pound weight had settled on his shoulders. This was what it meant to be king. Their lives were in his hands. From this day forward, his every decision would impact whether these people lived or died. He vowed that he would never take that responsibility lightly.

Placing a hand on Tomas’s shoulder, Caelan squeezed it and fought for air so he could finally say, “Rise, Captain Tomas Soto. Erya accepts your life. The crown cherishes your blood. The Goddess blesses your soul.”

Everything Caelan knows about his world is a lie.

A war is brewing. As the crown prince of Erya, it’s only natural that Caelan is sent on a secret diplomatic mission to support one of the kingdom’s allies. With his advisor, his bodyguard, and his best friend as traveling companions, what could go wrong?

Everything.

Everything goes wrong.

Now they are on the run, dodging assassins, setting secret meetings, and even making deals with a sleeping god.

So, this is probably a really bad time to cave to feelings he’s been fighting for his best friend. But Drayce has owned his heart for more years than he can count and if he’s going to die, shouldn’t he have just one kiss?

The fate of the world is on the line, and only Caelan holds the power to save them all.

Steal the Wind is the first book in the six-book Godstone Saga fantasy series and is not a standalone. The story contains explosions, secrets, cranky gods, hidden romance, a prince on the run, a possessive ex-boyfriend, magic, and lots of delicious angst.

Good lordy that was a headrush!

BreathofLife-CoverBreath of Life by Jocelynn Drake

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Book two carries on from where Steal the Wind left off, with Cael aboard the enemy ship.

After an action packed and tense escape, he and his friends find out there’s more things than just the state of Erya to worry over.

Making plans to return to the beleaguered capital city of Stormbreak, Cael, Drayce, Rayne and Eno must draw on every skill they possess.

The pace throughout is relentless, no time for a calming breath as hell breaks loose on all sides.

There’s still only a tiny amount of romance in this one, as before, the main focus is still with Rayne and Eno.
Although Cael and Drayce do get to have a conversation about the kisses which bracketed the end and beginning of the two books.

I’m seriously loving this series, it’s complex with a real mix of genre feels. Sometimes it’s pure fantasy, with swords and magic, at others it’s almost an urban alternative universe.

I have no clue what the deities of this world are ultimately going to do or how their relationships with Cael and his friends will develop.

There’s secrets and lies, betrayals and true support and chaos unleashed everywhere!

It’s what I live for and I cannot wait to get book three in my grubby mits 😁

I have got so much speculation running through my brain about where the plot is going next as they head off to the home of a dead god.
