Excellent second chance romance set on a Texas ranch

eMarriage2.jpgWrangling a Groom by D.J. Jamison

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

The second entry in the Marital Bliss series from DJ Jamison is a completely different kettle of fish than the fake boyfriend trope of book one.

This book is a second chance romance with lots of angst, lots of angry sex and a whole heap of stored up resentment, guilt, angst and – eventually – forgiveness.

I liked it a lot, even though it took a long time for Diego to get out of his own head and realise that things weren’t as black and white as he’d always thought and that a 19-year-old Wyatt was under so much pressure that perhaps walking away wasn’t the best thing to have done.

There’s an instant connection between the two older men when they meet after six years and there’s some ridiculously hot angry sex in a barn which I think is among the best I’ve read from DJ – although I wanted to thump Diego for how he treated Wyatt afterwards.

We get a fair bit of back and forth as Wyatt does his best to demonstrate to Diego that a life together on the ranch can be on the cards for the both of them and that he’s never stopped loving the other man.

My only criticism of this would be that it perhaps became just a slight bit wearing as Diego took a significantly longer time to wake up to the fact that he wasn’t blameless in the situation which had separated the two men when they were still just teenagers.

There’s a lovely guest appearance by Caleb and Justin from book one and I liked the extended set of characters we’re introduced to on the ranch and I’m intrigued as to see where the series goes next.

The obvious character is Mattias but I have absolutely no clue who is going to be the one to take him in hand as neither of the other two relatively young men we met in this book seems a likely candidate!

If you like angsty, chemistry-filled sex but slow burn romance, this one’s the book for you.

Can two men keep a childhood promise for marital bliss?

Wyatt is overwhelmed after his grandfather dies, leaving him to take over the cattle ranch. The Triple J is floundering, vandals are targeting him, and his first and only love is finally within reach–and still holding a grudge. Wyatt has wanted to marry Diego since they made a childhood pact, but Diego isn’t back for their second chance.

When a funeral calls Diego back to Texas, he comes face-to-face with the cowboy who broke his heart. Resentment has burned inside him for years, but his anger wavers as he realizes just how much Wyatt is struggling to keep his head above water. The man he once loved is lonely and burdened, and Diego feels compelled to help him rediscover the strong, capable rancher he knows him to be.

Hostility gives way to passion, then friendship as they fall into a rhythm of work and sex. Wyatt has renewed hope he might wrangle the man he wants to be his groom. But Diego has a life waiting for him one thousand miles away, and love may not be enough to prevent history from repeating itself.

Wrangling a Groom is Book 2 of the Marital Bliss series, but it can be read as a standalone.

About the Author

DJ Jamison is the author of more than a dozen m/m romances, including the Ashe Sentinel series and the Hearts and Health series. She writes a variety of queer characters, from gay to bisexual to asexual, with a focus on telling love stories that are more about common ground than lust at first sight.

DJ grew up in the Midwest in a working-class family, and those influences can be found in her writing through characters coping with real-life problems: money troubles, workplace drama, family conflicts and, of course, falling in love. DJ spent more than a decade in the newspaper industry before chasing her first dream to write fiction.

She spent a lifetime reading before that, and continues to avidly devour her fellow authors’ books each night. She lives in Kansas with her husband, two sons, two fish and, regrettably, one snake.
