Book Blitz: Absolution by J.V. Speyer

Absolution | J.V. Speyer

Publication date: April 23rd 2019

Genres: Adult, Romance, Suspense

The would-be highwayman killer’s case is closed, and Luis has been cleared to return to work.

He and Donovan are starting their new life together, and while they’re both a little new at this whole “stable relationship” thing they’re determined to make things work.

When people start dying at Assonet Ledge, it seems like a typical case for Donovan until one of the victims turns out to be a missing person from out of state, bringing the FBI into one of Donovan’s cases yet again.

The park ranger at the site is everything Donovan isn’t, and Donovan finds himself wondering if his partner isn’t falling into old habits. Luis struggles to understand Donovan’s jealousy, which puts a strain on their relationship and the case.

To top things off, there may be forces at work here that go back long before humans showed their faces, forces Luis can’t hope to understand.

Will those forces propel the case, and Luis and Donovan’s rekindled romance, off a cliff?

“Well, the alternative was pretty awful, so there’s that.” Luis grimaced. “It’s grim work sometimes, and it’s sure not easy, but it’s worth it. We’re getting our happily ever after, so I’ll do whatever it takes.”

He would, too. He’d always been willing to work for his happiness with Donovan as long as there was hope. He had his concerns about working on a case together again, but they’d get through it. Like the alternative to recovery Donovan had mentioned, the other option was too awful to contemplate.

“So I’ve got to ask,” Donovan said after a few seconds. “Freetown State Forest has a reputation, right?”

“Place is full of ghosts.” Luis chuckled. He didn’t need to ask what Donovan was getting at. “Most of them were kind of static though. I guess the technical term is residual? They weren’t interacting with the modern living world at all. They were just kind of re-creating the past. It was kind of interesting to see that past, but not helpful. Some of them were a little more aware. One chased after the pickup truck the other day, when you first joined in. Or when we first joined in, depending on your point of view. Anyway, he chased after us for a while, yelling at us to ‘Get off his lawn.’ ”

“Wait, what?” Donovan burst out laughing. “You’re joking.”

“Nope. Angry old white guy sitting in an old lawn chair, drinking a beer. If it weren’t for the glow, and the fact that none of you could see him, I’d have thought he was alive. He chucked the beer at the truck, and another one appeared in his hand. If I have to be a ghost when I die, I aspire to that level of badassery.”

Donovan pulled onto the highway. “Luis, you don’t even drink.”

“I’ll throw something else then. Or I’ll start drinking ghost beers just so I can throw them at passersby.” Luis grinned. “I still feel like I’m lost at sea with all this ghost stuff, but I’m getting there.”

Everything Dominic Price has worked hard to uphold is about to come crashing down on everything he holds dear.

So much for the quiet life. Just as assistant US attorney and brewery owner Dominic Price is settling into a comfy new chapter with his partner, FBI agent Cameron Byrne, the sudden death of Nic’s father puts their happily-ever-after in jeopardy. Nic immediately suspects foul play, his prime suspect a notorious gangster his father was indebted to—only now the loan shark is out for blood.

Cam has been longing for Nic to finally let him in on this very personal case. But when Nic’s belief that he’s the sole Price heir is upended, the line between personal and professional starts to blur, leaving Cam unsure of where he stands.

Nic is depending on Cam’s kidnap and rescue expertise to save his recently discovered family member before it’s too late. But with a dangerous threat closing in, the ghosts from Nic’s past cast long shadows.

Any relationship could crack under the pressure, but for Nic, finding his family might mean losing the love of his life.

Layla says: Nic and Cam have to fight for their lives and their happily ever after in this exciting, action-packed conclusion to the Trouble Brewing series.

“I adore this series, and I can’t wait for more Nic and Cam!”

Excerpt

“I’ve got you,” Cam murmured, and dropped a kiss on his temple.

“Just when I thought things were turning our way…”

Nic dropped his head on Cam’s shoulder, and Cam was sure Nic could feel his heart about to beat out of his chest, equal parts worry at the dejection in Nic’s voice, so foreign for him, and adoration, because he let Cam see that, not hiding anything from him, for better or worse.

“One setback.” Cam carded his fingers through Nic’s hair, more of the sexy gray showing every day.

“Three, if we’re counting.”

“Stop counting,” he playfully chided with a swat to Nic’s ass. “Unless it’s your breaths, in which case, take a few extra to settle.”

Nic took the recommended inhales, plus a few more, then rested their foreheads together. “Thank you.”

Cam waited for his eyes to open. “I love you.”

“I love you too.” Finally, a smile, if an exhausted one, right before Nic brushed his lips over Cam’s. It was a slow, gentle kiss, probably the only thing that would be in this already rough-and-tumble day, and Cam let Nic take all that he needed. Cam needed it too—this reminder of their connection, the threads of the rope being reinforced. Cam would hold Nic to his word. Nic hadn’t let the rope go for him when Cam had needed him to hold tight, and Cam wouldn’t let go now either, nor would he let Nic, or anyone else for that matter, cut through it with a Ka-Bar.

Meet two men who need each other’s help but don’t realize it until it’s almost too late.

Noah is gay and terrified someone might find out. So much so that when he was blackmailed with pictures of himself with another man, instead of coming clean, he left his SEAL team without a word.

The other man is openly gay Mason, a former Marine and now part of the FBI’s Joint Terrorist Taskforce. It takes eight years after their first meeting in the desert for a chance event bring the two men together again.

Now Noah must decide if he’s ready to accept who he is or if it’s easier to cut and run. Can they navigate the obstacles in their path to build a relationship?

And why does the thought of that scare them more than investigating a group of terrorists?

Excerpt

Nausea racked his body again, but this time Mason couldn’t ignore it. He jumped up and ran to the bathroom. He made it just in time. Puking his guts out with a raging headache was the last thing he wanted to be doing, but he wasn’t given much of a choice.

Every time his thoughts went back to what had happened, he ended up perched over the toilet. It hadn’t taken long for all the ingredients in his stomach to be lost to the porcelain gods, followed by the dry heaves that kept him in a bent over position. As he wallowed in self-pity, he heard something that had him standing straight, positioned ready to fight. Someone was in his house.

His hand moved to his holster, but it wasn’t there. Dammit. He looked toward his closet, then at his bedroom door that now hung partially open. If he went to get his gun and anyone came down the hall, they’d have a clear shot at him at his safe. He couldn’t risk it. He needed to be on the offensive. He looked around the room to see if he could find a weapon. Shit. It wasn’t the best, but it’d have to do. He picked up the plunger from behind the toilet. He’d use the rubber part as a grip.

His abdomen cramped as he moved. He took a deep breath and held the air in for a second. The pain subsided. He crept to the door, sliding it open enough to secure a better view out. He hadn’t spotted anyone or anything that appeared out of the ordinary. But right then, whoever invaded his home made their presence known. Mason couldn’t believe the intruder hadn’t heard Mason puking up his guts. But the fact they weren’t trying to stay quiet said they thought they were alone.

Mason slipped out of the bedroom door. He held still, checking if his opening the door wider had alerted anyone to his presence. Reassured he had gone unnoticed, he continued to the end of the hall. Once there, he peered into the living room. The area stood empty, and again, nothing seemed out of place. He paused to listen, all his senses on alert. The noise came from the kitchen. Mason tiptoed toward the room. Once at the door, he stopped dead. He could see the person’s shadow.

But that’s not what made him stop. What rendered Mason immobile was the fact the culprit in his kitchen was now singing. Singing. What the fuck? Rob a house, sing a song? It hadn’t made sense. He hadn’t cared. Again, he took a step and froze waiting until the shadow got closer — then he attacked — slamming the wooden stick toward the head of the intruder. He came in contact with skin and bone and the wooden handle broke and fell to the floor. The man shouted, and Mason recognized the voice. His stomach roiled and nausea burned the back of his throat.

Instead of running for the bathroom, he opened up the French doors and ran outside. He made it to the grass just in time. It surprised Mason that something actually came out, but before long he was back to the dry heaves, his stomach cramping. Before realizing Noah had moved, he stood outside next to Mason.

Noah placed his hand on Mason’s back and rubbed, and Mason body went rigid. What the hell was he doing there? Why couldn’t Mason remember? Part of him wanted to know, and the other wanted Noah to just leave. Mason knew that thought was bullshit before it fully formed. Deep down, he was glad Noah was there, no matter the reason.

Mason pushed himself up, closing his eyes while the blood rushed to the rest of his body. Cinderblocks crushed down on his head. Noah helped hold him up. Mason wanted to shake Noah’s grip off. But he also wanted to grab it and wrap it around himself. Mason stayed still and did neither.

About The Author

LA writes MM romance with a splash of suspense. She loves her men to work hard, play hard and love hard. It doesn’t matter what their walk of life, although she has a special place in her heart for Military heroes, those that put their life on the line every day to keep us safe, trouble always seems to find them.

Whether it’s a homicidal maniac, someone with a grudge against the country, or an ex who’s seeking out revenge – LA’s guys aren’t always faced with just fighting for love, they often have to fight for their lives.

LA has always lived in the North East and has recently stretched her boundaries and moved further North—the more relaxed lifestyle giving her more time to write—in theory anyway.

Among the things she loves besides writing and her family are her friends, those she writes with and those she writes about, reading, games (the kind with boards, not in love), playing poker, her dogs, Nutella and Bok Choy, and of course, the men and women from the Military, past and present, who keep us safe.

When she finds herself stuck at the keyboard, her fingers refusing to move, her characters refusing to talk, she likes to take a break, blast some music, and dance like no one is watching her or sing her heart out into her hairbrush microphone.

She’s living her happily ever after and wants the same for all her characters. LA believes love comes in all different packages and each should be wrapped in a ribbon and cherished.

Noble Hops is a perfect sign off to this series

Noble Hops (Trouble Brewing, #3)Noble Hops by Layla Reyne

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I need more stars! Lordy but this book was good and it perfectly wrapped up the Trouble Brewing series with a comprehensively tight and fast-paced plot.

So many times while reading this my heart was in my mouth wondering just where it was going to go next and how our merry band of suits was going to take the bad guy down.

I won’t be spoilering anything, but suffice it to say, the pay off is well worth the efforts expended to reach it and Cam and Nic are as solid as the rock of Gibraltar when it comes to their love and commitment to each other.

There are some surprises on the way, I’d guessed one of them but not necessarily the same circumstances it arose in, but other than that, I was biting my metaphorical nails right to the end.

I’m hoping the next foray will be a sideways shuffle across to the Coast Guard where I’d like to see someone get the better of Eddie and humble him with love!

#ARC kindly received from the author via NetGalley in return for an honest and unbiased review.

I might even love these more than Irish and Whiskey ;)

Imperial Stout (Trouble Brewing, #1)Imperial Stout by Layla Reyne

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Well, that was just as good, if not even better, as an opener for this follow-up to the Irish and Whiskey series.

Assistant Attorney Dom and Aiden’s number two – Jamie’s best friend Cam – are even more alpha male than their fellow law enforcement colleagues and there’s a slow burn with intense chemistry going on here.

Another really good plot, involving historical artefacts and a seriously twisted double crossing FBI plot sits alongside threats to Nic’s life from his estranged father’s actions.

As with the first series, the book’s story wraps in this one, with the main narrative arc continuing through the series.

I’m loving it!

More serious turn of events in this book but still superb plotting

Craft Brew (Trouble Brewing, #2)Craft Brew by Layla Reyne

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This one had a totally different feel to it than book one as it intimately involved Cameron’s past and his biggest regret and guilty mistake – a case he’d never been able to solve.

Without going too much into the connection and the plot, there’s more emphasis on the suspense and investigation elements in this narrative but there’s still just as much attraction between the two men

Nic’s still trying to avoid painting more targets on those he’s beginning to realise are family and Cam’s dealing with issues involving his own family back in Boston.

It’s an interesting move to bring both men together but with huge fears still causing them anxieties but I think Layla pulls it off.

Tensions ramp up to a fitting end, it would have been difficult to narrate any other outcome I think but I would have liked perhaps a bit more of the aftermath from the legislative conclusions as well with the bad guy.

The tone of these is quite different to the Irish and Whiskey series but it’s no less enthralling.

BLURB

WITSEC victim Noah Bradford knows secrets that could get him killed, and staying hidden seems like a good plan. What he didn’t plan on is losing his heart to a man who is sworn to protect him.

Battle-scarred US Marshal Robert “Mac” Mackenzie has a job to do, and guaranteeing the safety of Noah Bradford is at the top of that list. Mac will do whatever it takes to keep Noah safe, even if it means walking away.

Mac and Noah, brought together during extreme circumstances, have been separated by evil. It’s been six years, give or take, and Noah is coming for vengeance against the men who killed his mother.

He’s on a collision course with Mac, who has no idea of the man Noah has become. Sparks fly and the heat sizzles when these two powerful men are reunited, but will they survive the passion the past created?

Ricochet Teaser 2

EXCERPT

Noah sat watching Mac through the windshield of the SUV. Mac had gotten off the freeway before pulling over next to a roadside stand. The man got out and bought a bunch of flowers and although Noah wondered why, he didn’t ask.

A few miles down the road, Mac pulled into a cemetery.

“I’ll be right back,” the marshal said after parking the SUV. Mac got out and walked across the grass, avoiding headstones until he stopped before one and placed the flowers in the vase in front of it. He looked so totally alone, standing strong against the wind.

Mac’s lips moved as he talked to the grave, and Noah could tell this was someone important to Mac by the way his fingers lingered on the gray headstone. Something about Mac standing alone near the grave caused a tightness in Noah’s chest, and he found himself leaving the warmth of the SUV.

Mac looked up when he shut the vehicle’s door, and their eyes met across the distance. Noah didn’t approach. He just wanted Mac to know he was there if the man needed him. A moment later, Mac approached and they both silently got back into the vehicle.

“Was that a friend?” Noah asked tentatively.

“Family,” Mac said brusquely, and Noah turned to glance out the window, swallowing the lump in his throat, and then looked back at Mac.

His gaze was drawn to the dark-haired man with a sexy five o’clock shadow growing along a chiseled jawline. Although he couldn’t see it from this side, the scar running down the left side of the man’s face gave Mac a dangerous look. In the close confines of the vehicle, Noah was very aware of the power in Mac’s corded arms and shoulders. The muscular chest he’d been held against during the escape drew his eyes time and again.

Mac took a series of side streets before getting them back to the safe house. Sitting on the couch, he tracked the marshal with his eyes, watching as the man turned on the television and selected a station. Jake and Jenny were on their way back but had stopped for a bite to eat.

He found himself staring at Mac’s trim hips. His eyes darted away before returning after a brief moment to lock on Mac’s ass. Freaking hell, no way would a man like Mac want him. Yet that didn’t stop him from wishing. He would have given anything for Mac to look at him and see someone other than a needy WITSEC victim.

Mac stalked back toward him, and Noah jerked his gaze to the television. Despite feeling displaced and scared, he felt better with Mac nearby. The man hadn’t said a word since they’d returned from the cemetery, and Noah couldn’t figure out what he’d done wrong.

Mac dropped onto the couch next to him. The marshal’s scent reached his nose, and his overactive imagination pictured Mac’s scent on his body and how that would possibly work. His pulse suddenly hummed in his ears. The man’s weight dipped the cushion, and one massive thigh innocently brushed against his leg. Instant arousal hit, and Noah lifted one of the small decorative pillows to clutch in his lap.

Mac scowled at him, and Noah shifted beneath the somewhat angry stare. Again, he wondered if he’d done something wrong. The normally kind man was missing, and in his place was an irritated stranger.

The marshal’s phone rang, and Mac’s eyes narrowed before he answered it.

“Mackenzie,” Mac snapped.

“If you have stuff to do, I’m fine on my-” Noah stopped when Mac shushed him with a stern look.
