Regarding Dreamspinner Press

As a few other blogs, albeit it far bigger and with way more influence than my wee one, have spoken out, I felt I should also do the same.

I stopped requesting books to review directly from Dreamspinner Press a few months ago. I have, since then, published a few reviews/blog tours of authors still publishing there.

My decision for doing so were twofold:

One because it was a new author, and the request came via a PR company who I have a great friendship with and I didn’t want to let them down when this was a tour they’d accepted prior to a lot of the shit kicking off.

The second was directly via the author themselves, again prior to more of the disclosure about just how deep the mire was that DSP was leaving authors in.

I will continue to support all authors who have taken back their rights from DSP, especially with promotional work to get the word spread that their books are back on sale and available again. I will continue to support hybrid authors who are publishing work away from DSP.

This situation has not come out of nowhere. I’ve heard rumblings and rumours for at least 18 months, if not longer, in some quarters but 2019 has seen it reach a level which I can no longer ignore.

Authors aren’t being paid their royalties. That’s no-one’s fault but Dreamspinner Press. I don’t know what happened to those royalties.

I’ve put my two penno’th in across the internet, on both Facebook and my Twitter accounts, but I’d not made an offical Mirrigold: Mutterings & Musings blog statement.

So there it is.

When a Dom invites a shy bookstore owner to live out his fantasies, more than one life will be transformed.

Words are Heath Snow’s life. He can’t remember a time when he didn’t have his nose buried in a book. He couldn’t make a living as a writer, so he did the next best thing – he bought a bookstore. But when he’s not selling books, he’s living vicariously through the characters he encounters. Real-life men can’t hold a candle to the hot men in his favorite genre.

The Pride display in the bookstore window may be what captured Xavier James’s attention, but the man enthusing about books interests him more. The BDSM book lying next to the cash desk is a pleasant surprise, and when he draws attention to it, Heath’s flushed cheeks and bright eyes pique Xavier’s curiosity even further.

Xavier is about to learn that some things are more important than work, and Heath is about to step out of his comfort zone, into a place where fantasy and real-life co-exist.

About The Authors

kc-wells

Born and raised in the north-west of England, K.C. Wells always loved writing. Words were important. Full stop. However, when childhood gave way to adulthood, the writing ceased, as life got in the way. K.C. discovered erotic fiction in 2009, where the purchase of a ménage storyline led to the startling discovery that reading about men in love was damn hot.

In 2012, arriving at a really low point in life led to the desperate need to do something creative. An even bigger discovery waited in the wings—writing about men in love was even hotter…. K.C. now writes full time and is loving every minute of her new career.

The laptop still has no idea of what hit it… it only knows that it wants a rest, please. And it now has to get used to the idea that where K.C. goes, it goes.

parker-williams-1199.jpeg

Parker Williams began to write as a teen, but never showed his work to anyone. As he grew older, he drifted away from writing, but his love of the written word moved him to reading.

A chance encounter with an author changed the course of his life as she encouraged him to never give up on a dream. With the help of some amazing friends, he rediscovered the joy of writing, thanks to a community of writers who have become his family.

Parker firmly believes in love, but is also of the opinion that anything worth having requires work and sacrifice (plus a little hurt and angst, too). The course of love is never a smooth one, and Happily Ever After always has a price tag.

Ten years ago, Jon’s passion for the piano took him across country to New York, where a demanding concert career consumed his life and left him no time to look back. His father’s stroke is the only thing that brings him home to Seattle. The sick room makes for a dreary holiday until Jon runs into Bo, whose inner light can make anything sparkle.

Bo loves the holidays; the food, the crafts, the glitter! A fling with an old school friend – who grew up to be his celebrity crush – makes a good thing better. The season turns sour, though, when Jon is offered a gig he can’t refuse. He wants Bo to share the moment, but Bo doesn’t fly. Anywhere. Ever. Is this good-bye, or will a handmade ornament bring Jon home to Bo?

Romancing The…

Trust is the most precious jewel of all.

When Mayfair jewelers Starsmith Stones wins the commission for a gay royal wedding, CEO Joel Sterling is recommended to the brilliant young designer Matt Barth—only to discover Matt’s the man with whom he shared an anonymous and passionate kiss on the celebration night.

Disenchanted with the commercial jewelry industry, Matt nowadays prefers muddy archaeological digs to designing. Openly resentful of Starsmith’s hostile takeover of his family’s firm, he is horrified at the realization he’ll be working with the man who engineered that deal—but the opportunity to create something fabulous and unique for the royal couple is too tempting to refuse.

Working as a team reignites the spark between Joel and Matt. But when betrayal from within Starsmith threatens both the project and Joel’s confidence, will they have built enough trust to keep their newfound love as precious as the royal jewels?

Erin’s ogre saves the day in the second Copper Point Medical romance

41104632.jpgThe Doctor’s Date by Heidi Cullinan

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

While I’ve rated them both the same, I think I enjoyed this one a tiny bit more than the first book in what is so far proving to be an excellent series.

This had none of the preachy element that I felt had slightly taken over the narrative of book one, instead it was all about family, how they can screw with your head and change your perceptions of life.

From the bat, this was clearly going to more than the obvious sum of its parts. It’s not really a fake boyfriend story, there is so much history between Owen and Erin.

I have to say, every single time I read his name I had a pause to catch up that it’s a male character. There is an explanation for his name and Erin is an Irish gender-neutral name for the country of Ireland (Éirinn) but it’s more commonly used as a female name, so it threw me but hey that’s just a personal thing.

Erin himself was a complex character and I loved him, almost as much as I loved Owen, his ogre, his dragon, his defender against whatever tried to hurt him. Theirs is a genuine, emotional connection but, as my lovely friend Dani says in her review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show…

I wanted more tension, especially because the romance that followed was slightly lackluster. Erin is over 30 and a virgin. Owen is a former player. When the two get together, sparks … uh, actually, nope, sparks don’t fly because there are no sparks. And no steam. And I do mean NONE, unless you count two brief groping scenes.

The chemistry which I love to see in a romance is simply absent. Everything fades to black or is referred to off page.

This was a little disappointing, not because I wanted a full-blooded erotic porn encounter to read, but because it meant that element of their relationship was utterly missing.

Erin’s a virgin, the care Owen took with every other aspect of his relationship with him should have been there for the reader in this also, but it wasn’t. It was a throwaway line.

Still, that’s really my only grumble because I loved everything else about this narrative. It’s not a standalone, you need to read book one because there is a series long thread running in the background about the hospital all the doctors work at and I think it’d mean a whole chunk of understanding about what’s going on would be missing.

Now, on to Jared and Nick and I really can’t wait for that one.

Drake Park has a complicated life. As a gay male midwife, he’s used to raising eyebrows. Add Crohn’s disease and things get interesting—or not, considering the sad state of his love life.

Experience has taught Drake that most men are fair-weather sailors when it comes to handling his condition—gone for dust when things get rough. Staying healthy is a full-time job without adding in any heartbreak, so a little loneliness is a small price to pay. If he says it often enough he might even believe it. One thing for sure, the cop who arrested him isn’t about to change that.

Caleb Ashton does not have a complicated life. A senior detective with the Whangarei Police Department, he likes his job and is good at it. He works hard and plays hard, happy to enjoy as many men as he can while he’s still young enough—or at least he was. These days he feels adrift for the first time in his life, and the only thing sparking his interest—a certain prickly young midwife.

But can Drake find enough faith to risk opening his heart again? And does Caleb have what it takes to cope with the challenges Drake’s condition presents?

Jay Hogan is a New Zealand author writing in MM romance, romantic suspense and fantasy. She has travelled extensively and has lived in quite a few countries. She has a BA degree in Nursing and in Theology, and in another life, she was an Intensive Care Nurse, Counselor, and a Lecturer.

She is a cat aficionado especially of Maine Coons, and an avid dog lover (but don’t tell the cat). She loves to cook- pretty damn good, loves to sing – pretty damn average, and as for loving full-time writing -absolutely… depending of course on the day, the word count, the deadline, how obliging her characters are, the ambient temperature in the Western Sahara, whether Jupiter is rising, the size of the ozone hole over New Zealand and how much coffee she’s had.

She has complex boys telling stories in her head that demand attention and a considerable number of words to go with them. Their journeys are never straightforward and even surprise Jay. She does her best to plot things out ahead of time but those pesky characters seem to have a mind of their own. Go figure.
