I started having good days thanks to them. Good, bewildering, mind-numbing, eye-opening, very good days. It was just extremely important I didn’t get confused by their kindness. They opened up their home to me as an act of friendship. Nothing more, nothing less. As soon as I felt better, I’d be on my way again.

Crap.

The Game Series is a BDSM series where romance meets the reality of kink. Sometimes we fall for someone we don’t match with, sometimes vanilla business gets in the way of kinky pleasure, and sometimes we have to compromise and push ourselves to overcome trauma and insecurities. I’m often awkwardly silent or, if the topic interests me, a chronic rambler. In other words, I can discuss writing forever and ever. Fiction, in particular. The love story—while a huge draw and constantly present—is secondary for me, because there’s so much more to writing romance fiction than just making two (or more) people fall in love and have hot sex.

There’s a world to build, characters to develop, interests to create, and a topic or two to research thoroughly.

Every book is a challenge for me, an opportunity to learn something new, and a puzzle to piece together. I want my characters to come to life, and the only way I know to do that is to give them substance—passions, history, goals, quirks, and strong opinions—and to let them evolve.

I want my men and women to be relatable. That means allowing room for everyday problems and, for lack of a better word, flaws. My characters will never be perfect.

Well that was utterly delicious and sweet, just like Corey Cruz himself.

Cara’s back to the top of The Game with this book, it was an absolute joy to watch how Greer, Sloan and Archer enfolded Corey into their family and helped him recover from the abuses (non sexual) his previous “Daddy” had inflicted on his mental state.

Corey is a beautiful mixture of vulnerability, brattishness, sass and sparkle, but his autism also means he sometimes struggles to understand how he’s been manipulated by Marcus, the man who should have been protecting him when he regresses into his Little persona.

This was a read in one go book from the minute I picked it up, I needed to find out what was going to happen with Corey, would he move to Denver, away from all his family and friends, would Marcus get away with his awful behaviour (which we’ve seen glimpses of in previous instalments) and would Greer be able to stand back or would he finally intervene?

All these questions, and more, were answered beautifully as Cara spun this tale of recovery, of finding a family who support, encourage, enhance and protect everyone who comes in their orbit.

And OMG this is one of the hottest, but also amazingly emotionally charged, relationships in the series so far as each one of the four men finds their own personal connection individually, in pairs, as a triad and also as a quartet.

I don’t think I could have loved this book more if I tried!

“It’s a funny coincidence,” I said, picking up a rib. “We have a lot in common all while…”

“We’re entirely different?” he chuckled.

I smiled and dipped my chin.

Two Daddy Doms, two gay Daddy Doms, at a hole-in-the-wall bar in Richmond in the middle of a storm—what were the odds?

I wasn’t supposed to be so drawn to him. It would never work.

We learned some minor tidbits about each other while we ate. He was thirty-six and happy his folks had moved to Virginia. His rank in the Air Force was Captain, though his buddies called him Top, which apparently was painted on the side of his headgear when he flew.

“Do I want to know the meaning?” I wondered.

His smirk made a reappearance. “I always end up on top.”

I snorted and wiped my mouth with my napkin.

“I’m a brand, baby.” Goddamn, he was too much. “It’s become a thing during training. Puns comin’ outta every orifice—‘get on Top,’ if they’re chasin’ me, ‘look at him topping from the bottom.’ Chuckles all ‘round.” He paused. “Sometimes you gotta dive and fly low to confuse the bandit’s radar. That’s topping from the bottom. Well, among other things.”

I was familiar with among other things.

As overbearing as he was, I couldn’t help but want to get to know more about him. I wanted to see him fly. It had to be a heady experience.

If I were half as animated and passionate about my job, I’d be lucky.

“Another thing we have in common,” I said. “I top from the bottom outside of kink too.” Or within kink, if I dated a submissive boy who enjoyed topping as well. I was still exploring, to be honest. I’d only discovered BDSM three years ago.

Colt raised his brows. “Oh, really. That’s…innerestin’.”

Was it?

Fuck.

Was it? This was just dinner. It wasn’t going to turn into a one-night-stand. I’d left those behind. I was fairly certain.

Christ, why did I go there? This one was on me, to boot. I’d brought it up.

To hell with it. I had no issues being blunt. “We’re not sleeping together,” I told him.

He smiled. “‘Course not.”
