Sebastian was right. I was a coward. I ran my closeted tail all the way back to Georgia. Once I got there, I had no place left to hide. My life imploded.

But when I was welcome nowhere, I still had to go somewhere. I could barely look my sister in the eye, facing Sebastian didnโ€™t even exist on my radar, and I was prepared for my brother-in-lawโ€™s protective hostility.

I just didnโ€™t have a choice. For once in my life, I wanted redemption. I wanted to belong somewhere, and I was ready to work for it. Sebastian was the exceptionโ€”hard no. I might have screwed up royally, but he wasnโ€™t so damn innocent.

Heโ€™d hurt me too, and he better not push me. In fact, it was best we avoided each other altogether. So it didn’t make a lick of sense for me to seek him out to provoke a reaction.

Excerpt

It was still weird for me to be part of a family dinner where no one said grace. Itโ€™d been the rule for as long as Iโ€™d lived. If dinner was among family and you sat at a table, someone said grace.

Fuckinโ€™ heathens up here.

I removed my ball cap and left it on my lap.

โ€œMomma, can we live in an RV?โ€ Teddy asked.

โ€œYou think we have too much space at home?โ€ Soph smirked.

Teddy grinned sheepishly. โ€œNo, but we could go anywhere!โ€

I chuckled and grabbed myself a Coke.

โ€œWhere would all your toys go?โ€ Dylan asked.

Teddy hadnโ€™t considered that. โ€œMaybe in my room at Bastianโ€™s house?โ€

Sebastian shot him a little grin but didnโ€™t say anything. He was usually so vocal. Now, because I was here, shit was weird. He hadnโ€™t looked my way once. Not a glance as far as I knew.

Isabella was getting fussy in Dylanโ€™s arms, and Soph said she couldnโ€™t put off feeding her any longer. She excused herself to head inside and nurse the little one.

โ€œDonโ€™t step on Oppy and Percy, please,โ€ I said.

โ€œOh! I wanna see them, Uncle Blake!โ€ Teddy pleaded and almost knocked back his chair when he stood up. As if I could deny him. โ€œMomma, I go with you.โ€ He grabbed a new pizza slice and tumbled toward Soph.

Dylan turned a perturbed look Sophโ€™s way. โ€œYouโ€™re leaving me with those two?โ€ He just didnโ€™t know how to whisper.

Soph thought that was hilarious and just giggled in response. Then she disappeared into the trailer with the kids, and the tension automatically turned awkward and agitated. The latter came from Sebastian, because without Teddy around, he didnโ€™t have to pretend.

โ€œAre you gonna fucking eat or what?โ€ Sebastian asked irritably.

I glanced at Dylan, who was in the middle of finishing a slice, and it dawned on me that the question was for me.

โ€œHuh?โ€ I managed. Wow, he was talking to me.

Sebastian flicked me an impatient look. โ€œYouโ€™ve lost weight, and youโ€™re not eating. Are you sick or just dumber than you look?โ€

โ€œThis is nice,โ€ Dylan said. โ€œWe should do this more often.โ€

I furrowed my brow and wondered what the hell Sebastianโ€™s problem was. Okay, I could venture a guess, but if he wanted to avoid me, avoid talking to me, he didnโ€™t have to worry about what I ate.

โ€œI donโ€™t know what youโ€™re talkinโ€™ aboutโ€”I havenโ€™t lost any weight.โ€

โ€œDumber than you look, then. Because yeah, you have.โ€ He tossed a crust into one of the boxes and leaned back, his posture and expression saying he was letting it go. He didnโ€™t wanna talk anymore.

โ€œSo how are the Pugs doing, Blake?โ€ Dylan interjected. โ€œOr was it Bulldogs?โ€

I slid my stare to Dylan instead and let some humor seep in. Bless him. โ€œYou donโ€™t have to run interference, buddy. When Sebastianโ€™s ready to hash things out like a real man, these passive-aggressive little bitch fits will be history.โ€

โ€œBoy, thereโ€™s nothing passive about my aggression,โ€ Sebastian laughed. โ€œUnlike that snide remark you just offered.โ€

โ€œWhat was that, baby? Yeah, Iโ€™ll be right there.โ€ Dylan abruptly left his seat and fled inside.

Christ. We knew how to clear a room. Or a patio.

โ€œWe might as well get this out of the way so we can move on,โ€ Sebastian told me, and I lifted a brow, admittedly curious. โ€œSoph told me you were building them a house, and it goes without saying that I will be here to help out whenever I can. But as far as Iโ€™m concerned, thereโ€™s no reason you and I gotta talk. Weโ€™ll act civil around Teddy, and thenโ€”โ€ He shrugged. โ€œIโ€™ll just wait until you run back into your closet in Georgia again.โ€

Nice speech. He had it all figured out, huh?

โ€œAll right.โ€ I nodded with a dip of my chin. โ€œI take it youโ€™re not interested in an apology for leaving the way I did.โ€

He smiled faintly, a humorless twist of his lips that left me a few degrees colder. โ€œNo, you can save your excuses for someone who gives a ratโ€™s ass.โ€

โ€œGot it,โ€ I replied tightly.

About The Author

Iโ€™m often awkwardly silent or, if the topic interests me, a chronic rambler. In other words, I can discuss writing forever and ever. Fiction, in particular. The love storyโ€”while a huge draw and constantly presentโ€”is secondary for me, because thereโ€™s so much more to writing romance fiction than just making two (or more) people fall in love and have hot sex.

Thereโ€™s a world to build, characters to develop, interests to create, and a topic or two to research thoroughly.

Every book is a challenge for me, an opportunity to learn something new, and a puzzle to piece together. I want my characters to come to life, and the only way I know to do that is to give them substanceโ€”passions, history, goals, quirks, and strong opinionsโ€”and to let them evolve.

I want my men and women to be relatable. That means allowing room for everyday problems and, for lack of a better word, flaws. My characters will never be perfect.

Waitโ€ฆthis was supposed to be about me, not my writing.

Iโ€™m a writey person who loves to write. Always wanderlusting, twitterpating, kinking, cooking, baking, and geeking. Thereโ€™s time for hockey and family, too. But mostly, I just love to write.

Flaming hot resolution to Sebastian & Blake’s “enemies” romance

I'm not the enemy eCoverI’m Not Your Enemy by Cara Dee

My rating: 4.5 of 5 stars

Like book one, I don’t really think this is an enemies to lovers trope book and, also like book one, I don’t think it needed to be a separate publication.

Obviously it’s a duo, so part one is told from Sebastian’s POV and this one is all Blake’s but, imho anyways, it could have been done in the one book.

Still, what’s in this book is superbly written, as is everything from Cara. It’s off the charts hot and includes some of my favourite kinks (Blake is very much a slave to Sebastian’s commanding ways and gets off on the humiliation of being told he’s a cum dump, a whore for Seb’s cock etc) which is ridiculously hot.

It also has an excellent secondary narrative running through it about finding a home, about the importance of surrounding ourselves with people who support us and that, sometimes, it’s those who should be closest to us that can cause the most hurt.

My heart ached for Blake because he’s very definitely not a bad man at all, he’s conflicted and he’s fallen in love for the first time ever and doesn’t know what to do with his feelings.

I was pleased that things weren’t dragged out unnecessarily, there is a bit of “hate sex” right at the start when Seb and Blake first run into each other when there’s no-one else around, but other than that, this is more a book about reconnecting.

Teddy was his usual awesome self, I also very much appreciate Sophie and David, Blake’s siblings, and I love Dylan, Soph’s partner, who is all ends up just a decent bloke. I also loved the wee guest appearance of one of my absolute favourite characters of Cara’s Darius Quinn ๐Ÿ™‚

Ultimately though, this is a book about loving someone because they make your day brighter, your future happier and your life something to be enjoyed, and you do the same for them. It’s a really gorgeous relationship – once the pseudo enemies thing is out of the way!
