Rafael Patino has a great life in Rain Valley. He’s a teacher at the high school, has a great group of friends, and enjoys the occasional baseball game. Other than the sporadic call from his drunken mother, he’s pretty content.

He’s also been in love with his best friend Dustin for nearly a decade. Years of keeping those feelings under control are put to the test when they begin a summer project together.

Dustin Vance builds furniture for a living, has just earned his pilot’s license, and has an amazing best friend. When he buys a 1976 Cessna Skyhawk, he asks Rafael to help restore it, then travel with him to Wisconsin for the largest aviation convention in the world.

As they spend their days working on the plane, they begin to spend their nights together. Will they find love in the clouds, or will they stall out before they even take off?

Excerpt

A cool breeze blew past him as he walked out into the night. Rafael texted Dustin before he pulled out of the parking lot, letting him know he was leaving the hospital and asking about Mac’s phone number.

He put the phone back in his pocket and made the short drive home. He wasn’t going to check his phone if Dustin answered, but he didn’t hear an alert anyway. Dustin was probably sound asleep in his bed. He might have to get that number in the morning.

As he turned onto his street, he saw a vehicle in his drive and smiled when he realized it was Dustin’s. His best friend had a key, so he was probably inside. He pulled into the drive and parked behind Dustin’s Honda, peering inside just in case, as he headed inside.

He flipped on the entryway light as he closed the door and found Dustin sprawled out on his sofa, sound asleep, his arm crooked over his head. Rafael was pulled to him like a magnet and he was too damn tired to fight the urges at the moment, so he gave in and let himself look.

Dustin’s T-shirt rode up, showing a stripe of pale skin and Rafael imagined it was soft and silky. His fingers itched to slip under the hem. He stared a little too long, though and by the time he dragged his gaze up to Dustin’s face, his friend’s eyes were open and he was staring right back at him, a smirk on his lips.

“You want to take a picture of … something?” he drawled out teasingly.

Heat flooded his cheeks and he forced a chuckle. “Whatever.”

Dustin rose from the sofa and strode over and hugged him hard, as if just remembering what had happened. “God, I’m so sorry, Raf. Is the girl going to be okay?”

Rafael nodded, but wrapped Dustin up in his arms, letting his head fall to Dustin’s shoulder.

They stayed like that for a while. With anyone else, Rafael might have been embarrassed that he was fighting the urge to cry. Dustin held him tight and shared his strength. It crept into Rafael, shored him up. Helped him get past the image of Daisy huddled in that hospital bed. At least for a while.

When he finally pulled away, Dustin kept his arms around him and Rafael was too exhausted to read anything into it.

“Why are you here?” Rafael’s voice was quiet as he stared at Dustin.

“Because I know you, Raf. I know you care about all of your students — you open your heart to everyone. But I also know you’ve been particularly worried about this girl. I just didn’t want you coming home to an empty house.”

Rafael’s heart cracked more and he was raw. Open. Vulnerable. The world had reared its ugly head and shown its hideousness and he was lonely. Bone tired and lonely. And he didn’t want to be lonely. At least not for the night. He swallowed hard. “Will you … stay?”

Dustin nodded, no hint of hesitation in his blue green eyes. “Of course.”

Sweet best friends to lovers romance from Sarah

Love in the CloudsLove in the Clouds by Sarah Hadley Brook

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

This is a sweet best friends to lovers romance with very little angst and a nice gentle exploration of how it sometimes takes time to see what’s right in front of you.

I liked both characters, there’s a bit of the usual misplaced fears about losing friendships and not thinking the other man could be interested before they get their act in gear.

There is an odd side plot with a neglected teenager which I found strange as it didn’t really do anything much for the overall narrative, but otherwise, things run pretty smoothly.

It did feel at times like I’d dropped into the middle of a series and that I should know all the other people being mentioned but I don’t believe it is connected to anything else.

Overall, it’s an enjoyable read.

EXCERPT

I extended my hand for him to shake. He gave it an odd look, like he wasn’t understanding what I was doing. He gently batted it away. He laid his hands on my shoulders, and looked at me, almost like he was asking for permission. I shivered, either from the cold or the look he gave, I couldn’t tell. He pulled me to him, wrapped his arms around me, and held me tight. On instinct, I did the same.

My head was spinning with questions, but I pushed them away. There would be plenty of time for questions later, much later. Now was about being held, feeling his arms around me and memorizing as many details as possible.

I don’t know how long we stood like that, wrapped in each other’s arms with my drunk friend and his sister passed out in the car. Time seemed to stand still, and I found myself living in that moment, in that bubble, and in his arms. I don’t know if he realized at the time, but I breathed him in, studying the scent that I somehow knew to be uniquely his, vanilla and pine.

He loosened his hold and kissed the top of my head again, and for a moment I wondered why. There was no one around to impress, no one he had to demonstrate to that I was his. That kiss sent a warmth radiating through me, deeper than the one in the bar.

He pulled away slightly and looked down as if he were studying me. I’d be lying if I didn’t say I was doing the same. Maybe I would see him before he left, and maybe I wouldn’t, I didn’t know. I did know, however, that something like this had never happened to me before, and I was determined to remember every detail.

Finally, he cleared his throat. “I should go.”

No! my brain screamed. Stay!

“Yeah. Okay. You should.”

He pulled away. “I hope to see you before I go.”

My brain was still playing catch-up. My throat felt constricted, and it was suddenly hard to breathe. “Me too.”

For the same reasons? I couldn’t be sure. I wasn’t sure about anything anymore.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

I’m the oldest of three, from the Glass Capital of the world, Toledo Ohio.

Don’t laugh too hard.

I’ve dreamed of writing since I was eleven years old when I wrote a truly awful Choose-Your-Own-Adventure. It sold exactly zero copies. I think my mother may have a copy lying around somewhere. Mothers keep that kind of thing.

Through junior high and high school, I wrote a number of short stories, one actually published in the first (and only) issue of his high school’s literary magazine.

Life took control shortly thereafter, as it often does, and the dream of writing was put on hold. Then, in November of 2016, I took a leap of faith, and began writing my first novel as part of the National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) competition. The goal of the competition is to write a 50,000-word novel in a thirty-day period.

I failed.

However, on the advice of a friend, I “pushed through”. And so, in September of 2017, my first novel was published.

Much more romance in this second instalment

In The Shadows (Social Sinners, #2)In The Shadows by T.L. Travis

My rating: 3.5 of 5 stars

I liked this one more than book one but I’m still not clicking totally with this series and I think it’s because the characters act much younger than they’re supposed to be.

They’re approaching 30 but their language and behaviour comes across like new adult in their late teens/early 20s.

Now, that’s not a problem per se, but I think it’s why I’m not getting into the narrative fully.

In this one things turn a bit serious, not only is there a horrific accident to deal with, but also the status of Joey and Stoli’s relationship, which is quickly becoming devoted on both sides.

There’s still loads of band and behind the scenes music exposure going on too and I love the close friendship these guys have with each other and their management but also the guys in the other band.

I will keep on reading this series as I’m intrigued as to where the story will go next and I definitely see the whole narrative tightening up and focusing on the romances a wee bit more.

Henry finally gets his romance and it’s utter perfection

Risk Taker (Mixed Messages, #3)Risk Taker by Lily Morton

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Superb. British writing at its absolute finest and (let me whisper it) my favourite in the series because – Henry!

Oh this book is just gorgeous, Henry has been in love with Ivo since he was 15 when the other boy was briefly his step-brother for a few short years. Ivo is his world, his best friend, the only person he’s truly honest with and never hides from.

Ivo’s a photojournalist and is often in the most dangerous places in the world and he’s been in love with Henry for quite some time too, only he’s too afraid to do anything about it for many complex reasons which I completely understood.

Both men have been influenced by how they saw their parents’ lives and Ivo is still trying to live up to his dead dad’s mantra of living a free life, even if it means he’ll lose Henry to someone else in the long run.

The UST in this book was so well done. It’s obvious to the reader, as it is to all of Henry and Ivo’s mutual friends, that they are both desperately in love with the other. But there’s no so blind as those who won’t see and there ensues a delightfully hilarious and quite poignant period of their lives when Henry is trying out dating and Ivo is seething in the background.

The push/pull is never too much, it never becomes a chore to read because it is handled so well by Lily Morton that you’re eagerly waiting to see what outrageous thing is going to happen next. There’s a bit more depth goes into Henry’s background and we’re introduced to his delightful brother Silas (book please Lily!) and it was great to see their relationship was one of mutual support and love too.

The letters which introduce each chapter were genius, so many times I was finding myself choking back a laugh at the escapades they got up to in the three short years Ivo’s mum was married to Henry’s father.

I don’t think I’ve actually laughed out loud quite as much as I did with this book, even Gabe and Dylan in Rule Breaker didn’t make me chuckle as much.

Henry and Ivo just get each other, they’re able to snark for England and this book is a tour de force of humour. I think some are those only another Brit can truly appreciate – like referring to someone you love affectionally as a twat.

There’s quite a bit of Gabe and Dylan in this one too, and we pop in with Jude and Asa as well, and all of it adds up to more of the banter that this series is known for. The Guess Who dinner party had me in fits of laughter with tears as the sarcastic wit flew around the room.

Gabe referring to Dylan as like a cold that sneaks up on you and damages your immune system when expressing how much he loves him was pitched perfectly in contrast to Henry’s vacillating about what he was going to do about Ivo.

Things eventually come to a head – literally – and the sex is off the charts with these two when 20 years of tensions finally explode. But it’s not just about the lust, or the getting off, each man knows the other intimately, their fears, hopes, what keeps them awake at night and the emotional bond which has tied their friendship together is stretched out almost to snapping point.

I just loved everything about this book. It’s the culmination of the two narratives which went before it in the Mixed Messages series and, for me, it’s the cream at the top.

While I absolutely adored Jude and Asa and loved the heck out of Dylan and vulnerable Gabe, there was just something about seeing two men who’ve both been in love with the other for more than half their lives finally realise that love was worth taking the risk which spoke to me.

I’ve been waiting for Henry’s story since he first appeared as Gabe’s best mate and, in Risk Taker, Lily Morton delivered – for me – absolute perfection.
