Ben and Ashley are getting married! For the first time in history the Earl of Crofton will be allowed to marry a man.

But wedding admin isn’t always fun, and frayed tempers and bickering are not the best ways to prepare for the happiest day of their lives, but hopefully they’ll make it down the aisle before one of them kills the other. The arrival of two of Ben’s old friends at Crofton Hall does not help matters, especially with their rather messy shared history.

The hall also has a new writer in residence, Chris Gamling, and while he’s not always with the plot in the real world, he’s a brilliant wordsmith. When he meets Jack Webb, Ashley’s best friend, Chris feels the spark he’s been waiting for. Sometimes meeting the love of your life doesn’t have to be difficult.

This is the fourth Modern Crofton novel, featuring Benjamin Redbourn, the 16th Earl of Crofton and descendant of Anthony Redbourn, 1st Earl of Crofton from my historical series, The Crofton Chronicles. Each book in the Modern Crofton series will feature Ben and Ashley, alongside another couple finding love at Crofton Hall.

About The Author

Rebecca Cohen logo

REBECCA COHEN spends her days dreaming of a living in a Tudor manor house, or a Georgian mansion. Alas, the closest she comes to this is through her characters in her historical romance novels.

She also dreams of intergalactic adventures and fantasy realms, but because she’s not yet got her space or dimensional travel plans finalised, she lives happily in leafy Hertfordshire, England, with her husband and young son. She can often be found with a pen in one hand and sloe gin with lemon tonic in the other.

With contemporaries, historicals, sci fi and fantasy in her back catalogue, there should be something for every taste in Rebecca’s work.

A double delight as Ashley and Ben finally make it down the aisle

41qqa0ei9QL-2Getting Married at Crofton Hall by Rebecca Cohen

My rating: 4.5 of 5 stars

This is a delight. We get two love stories wrapped together here as Ben and Ashley go through the mill on the way to the aisle and Ashley’s best friend Jack falls madly in love with scriptwriter Chris, who is at the hall to work on Hidden For The Duke.

I absolutely adore Chris, he’s a complete cinnamon bun with a steely core and, while he floats through the world with a naive air, he can hyper focus to the extent that he blocks out everything else.

Jack’s suffering from a bruised ego and a lack of confidence as his previous long term partner ended their relationship fairly suddenly, and is now planning on marrying someone else.

These two bump – literally – into each other in passing before their paths cross properly at Crofton Hall and, while they might seem to rocket to an I love you situation, for me it felt like a realistic progression as both recognised they’d found their perfect partner.

Meanwhile, Dorian and Robin are on hand for the stag dos and they contribute, not necessarily deliberately, to the rising tensions between Ben and Ashley as they try to plan the wedding. For me here the plot was kept to a nice tight mix as they got mired down in the tiny details and lost the bigger picture – that they loved each other.

Rebecca uses some of my favourite background characters – Marchent’s wife Bunny and Ben’s sister Kitty, as well as the ever steadfast under butler Karl – to bring some sensibilities back to the proceedings.

Eventually, as this is a romance after all, we get the beautiful wedding and a (for now) happy ever after for Ben and Ashley that still leaves room for growth and more adventures.

Jack and Chris also seal their romance and their relatively angst free journey to love provides a nice contrast with the turbulent behaviour of their friends.

As ever I beta read this book for Rebecca but all thoughts and opinions are my own.

Blurb

Sometimes love comes when you least expect or want it.

Magnus Carlsen is determined to grow old disgracefully. At fifty-two, he doesn’t believe in keeping anything. Men, sofas, books—everything gets jettisoned, eventually. He’s divided his life into happy compartments. A successful trial lawyer, he spends his days lecturing jurors, exasperating judges, and striding arrogantly around courtrooms. He fills his nights with a parade of handsome young men who want to make him happy. Why date someone his own age to discuss back pain, retirement-planning, and corns, when he can date men who don’t care to discuss anything at all?

However, when one of these sunny young men shows an inclination for dramatic scenes, Magnus meets his new neighbour. And his whole world implodes.

Laurie Gentry is nearly the same age as Magnus, but that’s where the similarity ends. He’s messy and creative and nosy and mysterious. He’s everything that Magnus has spent a lifetime avoiding. So, why can’t he get Laurie out of his head?

Luckily, Laurie is only in London for the summer. Magnus can uncover Laurie’s mysteries and indulge their annoyingly hot attraction, and Laurie will be gone before complications arise. A few months isn’t long enough to lose his heart. Is it?

From bestselling author, Lily Morton comes a romantic comedy about two footloose older men and how one summer in London brings something quite beautifully unexpected into their lives.

Excerpt

He smiles cheerfully at me. “Are you ready?”

I blink. “I beg your pardon?”

“Are you ready for our walk?”

I rack my brain, trying to remember making plans. Then I realise that I didn’t. “Why would I be ready for a walk, Laurie?”

His expression is sympathetic but still somehow manages to look like he’s taking the piss. It seems to be a character trait of his. “For fresh air,” he says, slowly enunciating every word.

I roll my eyes. “I’ll open a window if I require that,” I inform him. Normally, I’d shut the door in his face. I have no problem with being rude. Today, for some unknown reason, I just stand here looking at him.

His mouth quirks and he claps his hands together. “Come on then, Mags. The day’s a wasting.”

“I’m not sure that my day was wasting in any form.”

“Were you working?”

I nod.

“It’s a Saturday. Your day was definitely being wasted. Come on,” he says. “Grab a jacket and your pension book and let’s go for a walk. It’s a lovely day”

“I do not possess a pension book,” I state. “Because I am only a few years older than you.”

“It’s not the age. It’s the mileage,” he says happily. “And those twinks of yours look like they could take a lot out of a person’s tank.”

I want to be angry, and indeed I open my mouth to blast him, but what comes out, to my amazement, is a huge laugh. He watches me, smiling, and when

I’ve finished chuckling, I wink at him. “I have a tank with a great capacity,” I inform him.

“Those who don’t, brag. Get your stuff and hurry up.”
