Stunning debut urban fantasy from Miranda

ShadowingTheLight
Shadowing the Light
by Miranda Turner

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Well that was an impressive debut from Miranda Turner and another name to add to the urban fantasy genre list.

Lots of excellence in this narrative, great world-building, a wonderful bunch of complex characters and a successful introduction to a new series which looks at the age-old struggle between light and dark.

It did get a tiny bit bogged down in the middle third when there wasn’t much happening and a bit of necessary exposition needed to be given to the reader. But, otherwise, the pacing is superb, keeping the plot flowing organically through a very complex and complicated narrative.

That isn’t to say the book is difficult to read, on the contrary, the reader gets an instant insight into the world within the first few paragraphs.

The romance/mates element never overtakes the thrust of the mission – to find Gabriel’s parents – and instead offers up lots of intimate moments as well as some seriously hot ones.

I may have had a wee eye-roll each time one of the supposedly hetero team members seemed to gain an attraction to another member or an external character of the same sex, but it wasn’t necessarily a bad thing, just a bit of a big coincidence 🙂

I rationalise it by thinking these guys are living and operating in highly pressurised situations and top-level enemies are trying to kill them all the time and pressure makes us look at people differently.

I have absolutely no idea where the story is going and that takes it onto my favourite books shelf.

BLURB

“Everybody has their own agenda. Everybody.”

Hunted for the unique blood that runs through his veins, half-angel, half-demon Gabriel Sinclair lives without expectations. On the run from forces on both sides of an ancient conflict, he searches for strength and peace in a world which only seeks to use him.

When Gabriel is forced to stop running, assigned a team—and a mate—he doesn’t want, and reluctantly tasked with a mission, he must overcome obstacles both real and imagined. Otherwise, the world as he knows it, and the mate he’s reluctantly come to care for, may cease to exist.

“I will do as the Creator bids me. Always.”

Evander Ryan is special, and he knows it. The final handcrafted immortal warrior for the light, he is the Creator’s greatest masterpiece. For fifty-eight years, he’s lived his life in black and white, coddled by his Maker, while leading his team to countless victories against their enemies. Those fights were easy. Working with a new, uncooperative mate who sees the world in shades of gray? Less so.

As Evander’s eyes are opened to the existence of light warriors who are not good, dark warriors who are, and the wider world of supernatural beings, he learns nothing is as he thought it was, and his mate isn’t who he thought he was either. Maybe there’s something to be said for not always following the rules. . .

EXCERPT

Gabriel sighed. Every fucking time he tried to relax something went wrong. Why did the drama always find him? “Do you need help?”

“If you would be so kind as to get me out of here without them seeing me, I would be very grateful.”

“Sure, man. I’ll make sure they don’t notice you. See the doorway right there?” Dubhlainn nodded. “That’s the back exit. I’ll provide a distraction, you get out there. I’ll meet you four alleyways to the left in fifteen minutes.” Gabriel looked over his shoulder at the two gigantic fae warriors Dubhlainn was running from. “Uh, maybe twenty.

“Go…now. Keep your head down,” Gabriel commanded him. Then he swung around off his stool and affected a drunken stumble, pulling a dollar out of his pocket. Walking across the room, he acted like he was heading for the jukebox on the other side of the bar. As he drew even with the two fae, he stuck the dollar in their face, asking them if they had change. As he asked, he swayed too far forward, losing his balance and taking the two large men down.

“Oh…I’m…I’m shhhh…shhorry. My bad.” Gabriel hiccupped. “I didn’t…shee you there.”

“Get. Off.” The warriors began trying to push Gabriel off them, but he kept stumbling and falling back onto them, clinging like a barnacle to their bodies to keep them from getting up. After a few minutes of struggling, they managed to extricate themselves from Gabriel and made a mad dash for the back door.

Smiling to himself, Gabriel stood up. Steady on his feet, he slinked out after them, intending to make sure his new friend got away safely.

Staying far enough behind them that they wouldn’t notice him, Gabriel followed the warriors through the alleyways. They kept trying to scent the air, but with all the scents in city alleys, it was almost impossible to single out any one being unless you were a were of some sort. Eventually, they turned the wrong way to continue their search, and Gabriel made his way to the meeting spot.

When he arrived, Dubhlainn wasn’t alone. “Fuck.” Why the hell was Michael there? “Was this one of your stupid fucking tests?” Gabriel asked.

“No, Gabriel. I was here to find you and saw you providing a distraction for the fae. I followed him when he left. I assure you, I’ve never met him before in my life.”

Gabriel rolled his eyes. “Way to be creepy, Michael. Dubhlainn, are you okay?”

“I am well, Gabriel. I will take my leave of you now. I would like to offer a token of my appreciation.” Bowing at the waist, Dubhlainn handed Gabriel a gold coin the likes of which he’d never seen. “Do not lose it. Its worth is beyond anything money can buy.”

Gabriel and Michael stared down at the coin. “What’s it fo…” Gabriel looked up only to realize Dubhlainn had disappeared.

“What the fuck?” Gabriel spun around, searching for any sign Dubhlainn hadn’t been a figment of his imagination. Well, the coin he now slipped into his pocket was real enough.

“I must say, I do meet the most interesting people when I’m with you.” Michael chuckled.

Excerpt

Seth kept the last cup of coffee, now barely lukewarm, for the man who always sat alone, distant from the rest. There was something about him that mesmerized Seth in a way he couldn’t describe. It was probably the man’s eyes, which were a vivid shade of blue that pierced even the darkest night. He sat on the same bench every night, huddled in a tatty black trench coat.

“Seth.” Blue Eyes nodded his thanks as he wrapped his hands around the cup Seth handed to him.

“It’s not very warm, I’m afraid.”

Blue Eyes shrugged, never taking his gaze off Seth as he sipped the coffee. His dark hair fell to his shoulders in waves, framing his handsome face. His olive skin tone made him appear healthier than the rest, although Seth was reasonably sure that was deceptive. A short beard and moustache helped further define his broad chin and sculpted cheekbones. Seth thought to ask his name, but couldn’t convince the question to leave his lips.

He was always like that around Blue Eyes: tongue-tied and awkward. The man was incredibly gorgeous, and Seth couldn’t help but be physically attracted to him. Maybe in another lifetime, under very different circumstances, he would have the confidence to ask Blue Eyes more about himself; discover the mysteries sparkling in the depths of his eyes.

But things were what they were and showing interest in the man was wholly inappropriate. So, instead of asking Blue Eyes his name, he uttered a goodbye and turned to go.

“I thought you told me that sweet little angel was totally gaga over me and couldn’t wait to jump on my cock.” Zagan twirled Botis around and slammed him up against the bathroom wall.

“There is no way I used the word gaga.” Botis shook his head and pushed Zagan away although in the small bathroom, that wasn’t very far. “That word has never passed my lips before and I’m not sure I’m pleased it has now. I never said he wanted to ride your cock either. He’s an angel for fart’s sake.”

“You know what I mean.” Zagan was furious. “You said he was begging to meet me.”

“Yeah, so, and he was.” Botis shrugged, smoothing his hands down his Hugo Boss jacket. “Clearly, he was infatuated with the stories about you. When he met you in real life….” He waved a hand at Zagan’s more casual attire, “Maybe you didn’t live up to the hype.”

A burst of flame escaped Zagan’s nostrils as he snorted. “I earned every bit of my reputation,” he snarled.

“And how is any part of that reputation going to put you in the good books with an angel?” Botis smirked at Zagan’s glare. Poxy demon was so smug; firmly wrapped around the Archangel Raziel’s little finger.

“It might suit you to be an angel’s pet snake,” Zagan replied, referring to Botis’s shifted form. “I just wanted to sample the goods. It’s not as though demons get the go ahead to so much as look at angels on the street. I was curious, wondering what all the fuss was about. And then the one angel I get a chance to meet can’t be bothered to give me the time of day.”

Botis laughed, something else that was new. Zagan realized there were a lot of changes in his normally surly friend. Happiness sat across Botis’ broad shoulders like a mantle, and Botis wore it well. Yet, Zagan would be a fool if he thought happiness weakened his friend in any way. Botis ruled his sixty legions with a rod of iron; he just didn’t fuck his minions anymore because Raziel didn’t like the idea.

“How can you stand it,” Zagan twitched as he thought about the sexy cute little angel sitting at the dinner table waiting for them. The man spent all evening bestowing sunshine smiles at the waiters, who were captivated with the little minx. “How can you stand fucking the same person night after night? Don’t you get bored?”

“You should try it sometime,” Botis patted his shoulder as he opened the bathroom door. “You might be surprised at how enjoyable it can be, especially when it comes to an angel.” His laughter was thankfully cut off as the door swung closed behind him.

Book Two in the Balance series hit the right notes

Passion Punched King (Balance, #2)Passion Punched King by Lisa Oliver

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I liked this one a bit more than book one because there was a bit more meat to the story rather than just – make angel and demon fall in love (because I didn’t really buy into the Uriel plot or the “find the Gilgamesh potion thingy).

In this one there was plotting in the Underworld to bring a bit more tension and the dynamic between the two protagonists in this one created its own difficulties as they were more diametrically opposed than Raziel and Botis had been in B1.

I also bought the connection between Anael and Zagan, which felt organic and a true partnership once they got over the little hiccup at the start.

I’ve enjoyed both books in the series, I like the alternative look at the whole Heaven v Hell conflict and the balance required to keep the world in existence and I’m looking forward to book three when, hopefully Uriel gets his own happy ever after.

Interesting approach to the Heaven V Hell conflict

The Viper's Heart (Balance, #1)The Viper’s Heart by Lisa Oliver

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

3.5*

I liked this more than I was expecting to and it had a lot of humour and an interesting approach to the whole idea of Heaven, Hell, angels and demons.

With passing references to Biblical stories, this was a short but pretty engaging romance between Raziel and his demonic mate and it has low angst and moderate steam.

There’s a fair bit of exposition and it’s a little bit tell rather than show but I liked that we got inside both characters heads.

The scheming was perhaps a bit off and I’m not sure I fully got on board with Uriel’s plotting but that’s my only negative really.
