Hate consumes.

         But love waits…

After Asa ran from the lover who betrayed him, he vowed revenge. Now, years later, a powerful vampire wants him to steal seven necklaces from the king of the Ellowyn—or murder him.

When Asa discovers that the king is his long lost love, he stumbles into a web of secrets and dark power plays he might not escape, because Asa isn’t the only one who wants the king dead.

A promise he made long ago is tearing Zeveriah apart. He’s a false king, haunted by his past and despised by many of his own kind. When a new employee, who looks uncannily like his old love, appears at the royal manor, Zev thinks he’s found his fated one again.

But this lookalike calls himself Emek and can’t hide his horror of vampires. Zev longs to woo him back, but the annual coven meeting and threats to his life demand his attention. Though he escapes a mysterious attack, one of the lesser princes isn’t so lucky, and all signs point to Asa as the killer.

Now with a murderer running loose and enemies surrounding him, Zev has one last chance to save his love.

But time is running out.

Extract

Asa wiped his hands off on his jeans and knocked the cold mud from his fingers. After a week of rain, Jere had borrowed him, and now he stood in a rose garden behind the house.

Most of the fog had blown off, but the day was dull and gray.

Asa rubbed his palms together, wincing as slimy mud got in the creases, and gazed from under his brows at the corner of the house. The muscles in his neck and shoulders pulled into knots. Why didn’t the bastard show himself? Was something wrong with him? Maybe he was an invalid like the prince Isaac had fed.

Asa wasn’t outside much, but it was early, and the king supposedly took walks every day, so maybe…

But nothing happened, so he took his wheelbarrow back to the lean-to behind the garage and filled it with bags of bone meal, burlap strips, and metal hooks. Grunting as he lifted it, he wheeled it back, not looking up until he got partway down the slope to the garden. He set his load down and rolled his shoulders, his gaze falling on half a dozen vampires crossing the property toward the trees.

Shit.

The one in the center had to be the king. His long hair lifted in the breeze like a crow’s wing, and Asa’s heart slammed in his chest as though it wanted out, the force knocking the breath out of him.

Mine.

For fuck’s sake.

He took a breath, but the ache inside him swelled to bursting and… The king stopped, his companions almost running into him. As though something had called to him—as though Asa had called to him—he looked over his shoulder. So far away… too far away to see his face.

There was no reason for Asa to imagine him standing in the shade of the trees in the Lakewood Refuge. That had been another vampire, not this… Not this one. This was a king. A conqueror. Asa pictured a slash of lips over dripping fangs and coal black eyes lit with sulfurous fumes, not the sensuous mouth and merry eyes he really imagined.

A laugh floated on the air. The creature’s wavy hair had blown across his face, and Asa’s heart jumped again. He ached to sweep it away.

A few moments later, the king strode off, this time heading into the trees alone. Not wise. Going without his enforcers was asking for it even.

But so what? The thing was a monster.

About The Author

Kayleigh_transparent copy

So… About me. I’ve never run a marathon or scaled Mt. Everest. I’ve never scuba dived or sky dived. I’ve surfed though. That was fun. I have six tattoos, and I really love ink.

I also love all plants. Zinnias are one of my favorite flowers. If you’ve never see a zinnia, look it up. Very pretty. It’s an old-timey plant but super easy to grow. Anyway, the big thing I do is write m/m erotic romance.

But as much as I love romance and sex, I really love going deep into the dark with my characters. What are their wounds? How can I peel them raw and drag them into the light? This leads to some fairly dark stories sometimes, but even the dark ones come with humor. I think the contradictions in people are ripe for hilarious scene setups. I need humor and light in my life—otherwise, I go into some pretty dark places myself.

I live with only one cat now—I once had thirteen. That was crazy. I take up most of the things I research for my characters—photography, tarot, and jewelry making for example. I even bought a recorder once because Ori from Jesus Kid played one. I love that part of my job.

I also love to walk and lift weights. I’m not a big fan of yoga—just throwing that out there. So far, all of my characters embody something of me, and all of my characters have given me something of them.

But no matter what the struggle is from book to book, love always wins out. I’m strong on plot, strong on character, stronger on love. You can count on happily ever after from me every time. I write my stories to open hearts and uplift spirits. Love matters. It counts. And it’s for everyone.

Peace.

Wonderfully sweet Cinderfella romance

A Right Royal AffairA Right Royal Affair by Helen Juliet

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Clearly inspired by the recent Royal Wedding, this is a truly delightful Cinderfella style romance with a boy from Dagenham winning the heart of a handsome English Prince.

*Now, the one thing I will say, is that while the author has created a fictional Royal Family ruling over the UK, I did cringe a bit each time I saw a reference to the Queen of England, or Prince of England, as it misses out the rest of the countries which make up our hodgepodge of a nation.

It might be a mouthful to call James a British Prince, but it’d be the accurate way if you’re having a Royal Family and Commonwealth which mirrors the real one.

That’s pretty much my only criticism though. Everything else in this romance is a delight, even the insta love attraction works and the whole meet cute is a really clever scenario.

It’s low angst, relatively steamy and has a great bunch of secondary characters. I live for the day when we actually get a same sex pairing among the crowned heads of Europe 🙂

#ARC kindly received from the author in return for an honest and unbiased review.

*Helen has let me know the England/United Kingdom references have been cleaned up in the final proof 🙂

 Length: 79,777 words
 Blurb

What would you do if you rode into a mountain tunnel in North Carolina and then rode out into a different world? Adam Stephens is about to find out…

Adam Stephens is a man with a mission. It has been three years since they chopped that malignant brain tumor out of his head, and he is off on a solo motorcycle camping trip through the Appalachian Mountains.

When he rides into the Pine Mountain Tunnel in North Carolina and rides out into another realm—a realm that comes complete with a big sexy grizzly bear shifter, mages, and an evil sorcerer—he isn’t sure he isn’t lying in the tunnel after crashing his bike. Can such a world exist? Or is he dreaming? If he is dreaming…it sure is realistic.

Along the way, there will be some major hurdles to surpass including no indoor plumbing…and no coffee. A man needs some basic luxuries, correct?

Excerpt

“Fine, if it’ll get you off my damned back, I’ll take the cell phone. And you already know I’m taking my Kindle so I can read in those serene mountain campgrounds that I picked out along the way.” Adam roared, as he stomped down the hallway to get the phone from his bedroom.

“Oh, you mean those campgrounds in the bear infested forests, which you picked out without even seeing them?” George yelled down the hallway sarcastically. He had made it clear to Adam—repeatedly—that camping in a tent in the mountains, alone, was the dumbest idea he had ever heard of. “Oh, and don’t forget, you’re riding right by where they filmed Deliverance. Someone might just tell you that you have a pretty mouth.”

“I could get so lucky,” Adam said quietly as he walked back into the kitchen. “And as to the campgrounds, I’ve already got my sites picked out and pre-paid, so it will be an easy trip. Relax, I’ve already got my bike packed. I’ve double checked everything, and if there’s anything I forgot, it isn’t like there isn’t a Walmart store every twenty miles along the way. I can stop and buy extra supplies. I’m not going to be riding through the wilderness.

“For your part, Georgie…don’t forget to come over and feed my cat. Otherwise, poor Cooper will be dead before I get back. And this time don’t forget the cat box! When I went away for those few days last year, you didn’t scoop and it was practically liquefied when I got back. That was disgusting dude, disgusting.”

Twenty minutes later—George having been mollified—Adam climbed on his motorcycle to begin his epic journey from South Florida to the Quebec line in New Hampshire. He had his tent, his sleeping bag, and enough food for a few days. Now if didn’t rain, the trip would be fantastic.

Not quite three days into his trip, and Adam was riding through the mountains of North Carolina already, which was quite a feat on a motorcycle—if he did say so himself, especially on these back roads. In a car, he might have done the trip in one day, but on his bike, it was far more strenuous on his body. Better to ride safely than quickly, and besides the views were fantastic. The Blue Ridge Parkway was proving to be as beautiful as he’d heard, and at least, so far, he hadn’t seen any bears.

Camping the first night in Florida had almost been a washout, after riding through thunderstorms nearly the entire length of the state and having to set his tent up in the middle of a downpour. Then last night in that creepy deserted campground in Northern Georgia, with all its bear warning signs, was so cold. How it was possible to be in the thirties when it had been ninety when he left his house in Cape Coral was beyond his comprehension. He could only wonder what the coming night’s campsite would bring. He hoped they would at least have hot showers at this one. His shower that morning in Georgia, with only ice-cold water and a thirty-eight-fucking-degree breeze blowing in through a louvered stall wall, had almost killed him. His balls had retracted so far that he didn’t think they’d crawled back out of his body since. At least it had warmed up fast and was now somewhere pleasantly in the seventies with bright sunshine.

Sighting an exit sign ahead, Adam pulled off the Parkway and stopped at the combination rest area and information center. He needed to pee, and it would probably be smart to grab a physical Blue Ridge Parkway map. His map app on his smartphone kept trying to direct him off the Parkway to a much faster Interstate Highway option.

After using the rest room, Adam walked into the information center, picked up one of the free maps from the display by the door, and approached the cute bearded guy behind the counter. “Does this map show all the tunnels and campgrounds? I’m heading for Linville Falls tonight, and I’d like to keep track of where I am during the day.”

“It does, but man, I’m glad it’s you, not me. That’s a long way to go on this type of road in one day on a motorcycle. Good luck with that.”

Adam smiled and thanked him. Walking back outside, he took one last look around, decided he probably didn’t need to walk up the trail to the scenic overlook, and instead walked back to his bike. He put his helmet back on, climbed on the bike and headed back to the highway.

He had no idea that he wouldn’t be making the campground that day.

God, I love these. Adam’s spirit was flying as he roared into yet another of the stone tunnels along the route. This one, the Pine Mountain Tunnel, was supposedly the longest on the Parkway and it was even better than the previous ones. As he rode into the pitch-black darkness, his light glinted off the reflective lane markers along the center line. Just imagine how much stone is over my head right now…I wish this would go on for miles.

Adam pushed his acceleration up and zoomed through the darkness toward the light that he could now see at the other end. Within seconds he flew out…into a torrential rainstorm. What the fuck, it was just sunny!

Adam’s bike slammed into a huge mud puddle, splashing water up and all over him, effectively drenching him before the heavy rain even had time to get him wet. He slammed on his brakes and tried to come to a rapid stop. Instead, his large, heavy motorcycle slid sideways in the loose mud and the next thing he knew he was going down. His bike hit the ground on its right side and then stalled, leaving Adam lying on the ground with it. He groaned. Damn, that’s going to hurt later.

 Author Bio

Daniel Mitton is not a statistic. When the doctors broke the news to him that he would be dead by the end of 2013 from brain cancer, he scoffed at them. He has proven them incorrect, and continues to prove them more incorrect every day.

He is now pursuing his lifelong dream of telling other people his stories in writing. His overactive imagination used to get him in trouble. It will be interesting to see what happens this time.

My Name Was Karl is his first self-published work, but he already has two other books in a queue somewhere at a publisher.

Daniel was born and raised in northern New Hampshire, but now lives in sunny Southwest Florida with his husband of nearly twenty-eight years. He totally doesn’t get why some people complain it is too hot in Florida!

Through the Tunnel is an interesting mix of paranormal and alternate reality

16556212

Author Daniel Mitton

Daniel Mitton’s latest release is an interesting mix featuring as it does an alternative reality story mixed into a paranormal and magic.

I’m not 100% sure it worked properly, this book really does need you to suspend belief as the plot and the pace rattle along like a speeding train out of control and heading for a broken bridge.

But, there’s also some nice world building, the pseudo mid-western USA vibe of the 1800s wagon trail feel worked well to evoke an alternative reality where both shifters and magic is real.

I liked both the main characters, who for a change weren’t buff young dudes in their early 20s but instead were hairy bears in their late 40s and just turned 50, something you don’t get very often in the genre outside of “kink” books in my reading experience.

They do say authors should write what they want to read and I have to say, a  lot of the time this felt like a wish fulfillment with Adam, the transplanted guy who arrives in this new mysterious world, ending up not only a rare shifter type but also the most powerful mage there had ever been.

But, it so happens that the wish fulfillment is also an enjoyable read in its own right and I found Part Three – once they were gearing up to attack the bad guy – to be the best paced and the ending was satisfying.

What madness lies in this alternative reality!

Journey To GaytopiaJourney To Gaytopia by Joel Craig

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

This one’s different! A humorous alternative reality graphic novel in which our two heroes have to wrangle with the evil twin sister of the glamourous actress Fay Dunnaway who’s kidnapped pop goddess Madonna!

It was a pleasant change to read an LGBTQ+ focused graphic novel, it’s a genre where the community is sadly under represented and this one was a funny and outrageous journey through a fantasy world which closely resembled our own but with enough “left of centre” happenings to make it clear it wasn’t life as we know it.

There’s lots of snark and as for whether our two erstwhile heroes manage to rescue Madonna from mad Mae, you’ll have to buy it and see!
