My favourite one in what has been an outstanding series
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
OMG so good, definitely my favourite of this quite brilliant series.
With Rocky, Aimee has created a full-fleshed out complex and complicated man who sometimes gets in his own way but who I absolutely understood and empathised with.
He’s dealing with not only a traumatic incident, but with the insidious poison of his husband’s best friend’s manipulations and more than a year after he ran out on their marriage, he’s still dealing with the aftermath.
When Asher turns up in Savannah, looking to reclaim his husband as well as move on with his career as a US Deputy Marshall, it acts as a catalyst for Rocky to begin to take a look at how he’s not been dealing with the fallout of a private investigation which went horrifically wrong.
Asher was such a wonderful guy. He’s determined but never overrides Rocky’s fears and anxieties. Through Rocky’s POV, we see a strong, principled man who will do anything for the guy he loves.
The case which this installment is built around was also a fascinating one, for a long time I wasn’t sure where it was going to go and I was surprised by the outcome, which I felt was completely within keeping of both the characters involved and the overall situation.
There are moments of levity as well to break up the sorrows and the levels of anxiety and PTSD which Rocky is facing and I think it was pitched just right.
And, as ever, there is the wonderful friendship at the heart of this series between the three men who run the Sinister in Savannah Podcast.
Plus, the rock at the centre of it all is still Miss Marla, who is with no shadow of doubt one of the best characters to have come out of Aimee’s wonderful imagination.
She is still vivacious, although there is a growing air of fragility about her which had me tearing up on more than one occasion and outright crying during the Live Celebration which is organised at the drag queen diner.
I am sad this initial trilogy has ended, but so very happy to read there will be more spin-off standalones as a result and that Aimee is intending to go back to where it all began with Royce and Sawyer too 😁
