I liked this, but at the same time it seemed to drag a bit, which is odd really because the narrative rolled smoothly through each of the story beats.

I guess a lot of my disconnect with the book is that this was a different style of Daddy/boy that I’ve not really come across/read much of and I was expecting it to follow a pattern I was more used to.

So that’s on me and not on Ed’s ability to tell the story.

For me, though, there was an element of repetition over Slate’s need to be a boy and have a Daddy which wasn’t necessary when it was saying the same thing. I was told he needed to be hurt, humiliated and used like a toy, but I wasn’t really shown why he felt that.

The secondary plot of a previously abusive daddy was also told rather than shown and Isaac felt a bit cartoon villainy and the sense of dread and oppression Slate felt was, again for me, told rather than shown other than one scene at the club.

They were my two main stumbling blocks in this one because I loved that Rex was younger than Slate by a considerable amount (it’s a two decade age gap) and I loved that he had his own vulnerabilities outside of his immense confidence in his ability to be a Dom.

I also appreciated them talking through things, and there weren’t any miscommunications or unnecessary angsting for the sake of the plot. The setting is also interesting, and I’m intrigued by a lot of the other characters we met in this opening book.

It may be that, as it was the opening story, there was a bit more exposition needed for the scene setting, which interfered a bit in the relationship between Slate and Rex specifically.

I loved it when the two of them were together and, from my limited knowledge, their kink scenes together, more of a lifestyle to be fair, did work and they were both very obviously good for each other.

So, all in all, I liked this one and I am looking forward to seeing where the series goes.
